- Amtrak Lincoln Passenger Train 301, from Chicago to Springfield, IL. Among the stops: Normal, IL, home to Illinois State University. This run has all Amfleet passenger cars, with their curved sides.
I never get tired of hearing that train whistle, and it gets used a lot in Springfield, where trains rumble down grade level tracks a block east of the Capitol Building.
I have taken 301 many times from Chicago to Springfield
It's very convenient, stopping two blocks from the Capitol Building, and the mid-century modern State House Hotel.
The Amfleet cars are used in this service because the newer, flat-sided "Horizon" cars are not rated for the higher speeds used on portions of this line. Truly a testament to the quality of the Budd-built Amfleet cars; they will still be rolling and looking good as new in twenty years and the cheap, rattly Horizon cars will all be scrapped.
It'll be interesting to see how the Siemens Venture cars work out. I've seen them on Amtrak Midwest trains so far. Time to take the Hiawatha to Milwaukee.
nice train did you like it artist Mac
Loved it! There's nothing better than train travel. Best trip I ever took was out to the West Coast on the California Zephyr, then Emeryville down to L.A. on the train, then back to Chicago on the Southwest Chief. Too bad I didn't have a palm-size video camera back then.
