Had the exact same problem with my sons 2001 Jeep GC, this video convinced me to purchase a reconditioned ECM on eBay $135 delivered, just installed the new ECM and it fixed the problem. Great video thanks for posting it, more than helpful and saved me $$$$$.
I love the reference to the Load Pro. That got some viewers to comment! Great video Keith. I like the way you follow the trail of "what do I have" to determine a path.
you know the communication systems very well. You did a great job in deciphering what the issue was and I'm quite sure that I your followers will learn a lot. Keep up the great work and have a great weekend! 😀👍
Living up to your name, New Level Auto. Don't know how much we appreciate it. Your videos help us tech put food on the table. Truth is an average good tech does not have the level of knowledge displayed in this video and those that do have an upper hand. Love it. I know it takes time which is $ so TYVM!
+The Homie Hektor lots of reading of everything I can and testing on a known good vehicle on a Sunday evening. Can't know what bad is till you know what good looks like
Great diagnosis Keith as always! Pico is a great piece of kit, even the cheap one I have, but you don't realise that until u use the Verus with limited capture. How about a video on essential diagnostic kit, I'll start 1. 200milliamp test light 2. 3 amp light bulb 3. Picoscope 4. .......... Cheers sandy
Hi Keith! So basically you were checking your wiring on that proprietary circuit (SCI, a Jeep thing?) to the PCM to verify that there were no wiring issues. Since your wiring tested good, you were able to condemn the PCM? So in essence, the PCM output (to the instrument cluster to disable the security feature) was non-existent? Let Me know if I am summarizing it properly, ok? Thanks.
+lee ann in this case the failure is of the PCI bus line . The SCI line is used separately and only deals with the pcm to data link connector. The second line (problem line) is the one that connects the pcm to every other module on the vehicle. Since it is required for one module to talk to another , the immobilizer module aka Skim could not verify the start authorization with the pcm to allow the vehicle to run. Let me know if that was clear enough. I know others will learn from that question as well

Were is the inersha reset cause I hit a huge bump and cut power to the motor and fuel pump.... or you think it could be my pcm....it turns over but wont start and I have all my lights. All check and see if my check engine light and key light come on first.... thanks for the video
Keith, can I hire you to identify an electrical problem I am having with my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee? I live in Stamford, CT and can drive to Staten Island or thereabouts.
you can order pcms online with it pre-programmed with vin and mileage. did that once it lasted a year or so. so i sent it back after it would start stall just like this and took it to dealer to have a good pcm put in it and programmed. cost triple the price but has held up 5 years.
Best piece of diagnostic equipment would have to be the _brain_ - everything else is useless unless you know how to read and decipher the raw data. And it also works damn well on old (classic) cars that have electrics instead of electronics.
About time you made another video lol. No seriously though great work and much appreciated. I have that same aftermarket kit but wish would of bought the AES WAVE kit. I guess I better order it.
Joe Laplnski simply put its the unplugging of a loaded circuit to test when the intended load is already on the vehicle. There is a time and a place for any tool , but testing can be done so easily without the load pro that I would never feel a need to use one. Nor would I suggest anyone invest there money in one.

I think even if I had your experience, my mind is just not able to move through a diagnosis as fast as you do! I'm going to have to watch this one again to let it all soak in, lol. You're definitely where you're supposed to be, no question about it. :) I've got alot to learn when it comes to networks, that's for sure. Heck, I'm just finally getting a handle on OBD-II in general! :D Thanks for sharing! Just so happens my buddy just bought the exact same vehicle & engine for his son the other day - I took a ride with him to give it a look over & check it out with the Autel. Turned out to be a decent vehicle for the money, so we hauled it home. Now I know there's a theft symbol in the cluster there to keep in the back of my mind. :)
Let me just say WOW. I am dazzled. Understand about 25%. But that's up from 2% when I first started watching Danner. I am starting to comprehend that these modules all communicate in square waves to each other. And your getting in on that talk. I c Ivan has a newer Verus with Bluetooth. As the center of the scanner universe, would u have anything to do with that? Does he get to use the DRB?
Bill Rimmer Square waves? They communicate with digital signals. Most of the time he doesn't care to decode what they are saying, he's concentrating on whether modules can actually talk to each other. He implies that once they can talk they'll talk just like they did when the car was new. He doesn't need to care what they are saying so the pico scope is good for making sure the pipes are not all clogged up. He looks at the top. No response? Let's look at the bottom then. There is a middle, but that's of concern to designers, not field techs (sorry, he's doing a lot more than a field tech, but he's not designing a bus.)
I got a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2000 I’ve been having trouble with it starting I was wondering if you can get back with me when you see this so I can tell you the problems
+SKO NYC certainly good enough to get you through some vehicles. I personally prefer the launch but the coverage is similar. Don't waste money on the elite though . Get the mini , look closely at the specs and you'll see why . You're just paying for a j2534 head that isn't even supported by many manufacturers. Get a mini and buy an aez flasher from www.aetools.us
New Level Auto thanks brotha I'm new at this so I greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks for the link I'm definitely going to check it out and do my homework on it.
Instead of s pop tent, (which are big and unwieldy, heavy, and take up lots of room.) would you consider a beach type, or patio table type collapsible umbrella? Except for the length, they collapse into a relatively small package! You ca fashion a base(maybe even if you know a welder) to be easily moved, yet add some extra weight for stability in a storm (to an extent). Most have a locking joint, to change the angle at will. It would be great for a rain that is not associated with dangerous, windy conditions. Can be set up in the hinge area, of an open door, to protect the vehicle. Can be positioned almost anywhere around a vehicle for a quick sun shade. You can use 4x4x16 solid concrete blocks for weight. You can use sandbags. You can use junk parts around the shop. Basically, a steel plate, say 2x3ft (to hold a weight), or so, with a piece of pipe welded on it. Use extra pipe for height adjustment. A screwdriver thru a drilled hole to hold it from blowing out. It wouldn't be too expensive. So, easily replaceable if damaged, worn out, lost, stolen, or what have ya! If you have to spend more than a few minutes on a job, and there is some unfriendly conditions, certainly it's not a closed off shop, but better than nothing!!
+roadkill5333 the most pain in the butt part of all that is the amount of space it would kill in the van. Here in the city having a larger vehicle is a huge nuisance due to parking. My van is smaller but also more discreet to allow the shops to keep a customers faith. If I drive into their shop with a big bannered up truck the customers begin to look for something better than the shop they're at. All if your ideas were terrific but slightly impractical for the space I have available currently 😔
New Level Auto I knew the length would be an issue. Do you have room on top for a pipe carrier? A 6 or 8inch p.v.c. pipe would easily carry the umbrella, and a pieces of extender! Being in New York City, it may be a challenge to keep it!! Unless you put hazardous waste stickers on it, and smeared a lil dog poop on it, every once in a while!
New Level Auto I was an" Interstate Commercial Freight Transportation Engineer", (a.k.a. Truck Driver) for over 12 years!! I swore I'd never set foot out there again. Was I ever wrong! I had a load to deliver to some small newspaper company, in the middle of a neighborhood, that had never heard of a big road truck. My appt time was 6am (5am central) and I was unloaded early, and told to leave! No parking room for me! I made it to the Lombardi service plaza, just in time for my bosses to get to come in and dispatch me to Yonkers, for a sugar load!! Oh well! I couldn't think of a better way to waste an hour and a half, than to be sitting in traffic on the G.W. bridge, during rush hour in the morning! I told the next company that my address was N.Y, NY. AND I WANTED TO BE HOME EVERY WEEKEND!! I never went back!!!!!!
bryan916 No. This is how they make their money, or when the prez grants a 'bailout'..... if Chrysler made better quality products like they did 30 or more years ago, they would be rolling in the dough.
I have the same issue 04 jeep grand cherokee V8 4.7L all I do is pull the battery cables and tap the fuse box next to the battery. Not sure if it's the ASD sensor. Anti shock sensor. All my electrical works the fuel shuts off.
IF it cranks without starting on some models it could be the 10amp PCM/ECM fuse under the hood has a hairline break that is hard to see, that can happen if you jump a low / dead battery, so swap that fuse. ALSO if like me you get a spare dumb key for the door and you put it in to start the Jeep or the wife does, it does the same sort of thing. & The Keyfob even works to lock and unlock doors but it acts like the keys were 'deleted', after 1999 the error code Pxxxx comes up for the skim communication, but it still can just be that 10amp little red fuse by the battery, since he does not mention it , check that first with a bright light or just swap it. & I'm rootin for you hope that's it.
Howdy Keith. Lovin the adapter kit. Your not helping my tool addiction.😉. Do you have an opinion of the snap on zuse? My boss just bought one.we got a good price for it. I haven't made it sing to its full potential yet. Was wondering what your thought of it . Thanks again for all the excellent vids. Cheers mate
Javier Rocha wow ... that in itself would overload the comments section . But I honestly think the Zeus is a true waste of money and deters people from learning and promotes the possibility of learning incorrectly.
New Level Auto I thank you for your honest reply. Well we own it now.no goin back..with your vids ,I will never get complacent. Will always strive to be like you amigo.
so there is two types of code running thu the data bus?? did the overhead and dash work differently with the pcm unplugged? curious minds want to know. question everything!!!
richard cranium ah, so you wanted me to show the comm back up with the pcm unplugged Right? Should've showed it. Next time definitely. This is why I love your input
correct. love your videos .i just like visual confirmations.been bit enough that that one time in a thousand finds me. and it never hurts to double check something
@@NewLevelAuto Thanks for confirming the diagnosis! My dad's 2000 GC has the exact same issue (no gages and auto-shutoff after about 3 seconds with security light). Was working on it all day yesterday. I found some sort of grease inside the casing for the SKIM module, is that normal? I disassembled it, cleaned it with contact cleaner and put it back together with no change. Will check out the PCM pins you mentioned next time I'm up there. I wish I had an o-scope.
I know this is an old video but do you have any recommendations for a decent windows tablet in 2021 ? I've been looking to buy one for exactly what you're using this one for in this video.
I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 V8 and usually it is after it is warm, at start up it will do a coughing like stall out.. eventually it will start with a carbon like gas smell it has been doing this for some time now like (3 years) but previously very very rarely it would chug going up the hill leaving my house with engine light blinking i would stop shut off and restart and things would be fine (not sure if it is associated).. only for about 4 months it had done the warm start stall thing.. so with my limited funds, alot of forums and RUclips videos i read to change my crankshaft position sensor.. easy right?? NOT!! 18 hours later with my own lubricant mixture (even parts of acetone and atf) I loosened the horribly placed part (without breaking it) enough to get it out.. same symptoms started again (problem not fixed) upon replacing sensor i noticed a slight leak behind the harmonic balancer (not sure of this has anything to with it plan on replacing that after stall prob is fixed) and the balancer has a slight wobble.. yesterday i changed my oil and it was at about 4,000 miles and it smelled like gas (again not sure if it has anything to do with said problem)... engine code p0300 displays with key check. Sooo my question i guess is where the hell do i start or is there a common prob in my model? Every video and forum has a list of things that it could be.. I am a self taught diy fix it gal i have repaired my break booster, changed a fuel pump in a dodge 1500, diagnosed other sensor prob, changed coolant housing tube things on a relatives vehicle, and various other things all with you tube and some research (just so u understand my determination to fix this myself) also my jeep aka betsy has 180,000 miles on her.. any advise is appreciated..
I shut off my truck lock it and notice the time on stereo won't shut off, and the buttons on doors stay illuminated is this normal? is this gonnavdrain my battery? how do i fix this every other light is off except for the time on stereo and the illuminated buttons on doors only .its a 2000 jeep cherokee laredo
WoOoOoOoOo! I love this kind of videos! Just one question: how do you know is the PCM bad and not a sensor connected to the PCM that is causing the hold up?
+Moving Up Diy so how many sensors have you ever heard of that hold a voltage high or become shorted to voltage . Only one that would come to mind for me is the o2 sensors. So I just use the logic that for it to be held high I want to look for something that has the ability to bleed voltage like a failed drop down resistor . We know where those are mainly found Right? Ecm/pcm so it makes for a faster logical approach. Notice that the asd did not need to be turned on in order to see th high line voltage as well? Again that makes me think more along the lines of a module failure
Mine does that after 30 min my RPM drops like it wants to shut off but cranks back up to reg. RPM ?! Does anyone knows what could be and no check engine light on what makes it more tricky 🤔
Get a Actron CP9680 code tester. It checks live, record, graphing, transmission tests, emission readiness test, ABS, SRS, and MORE! Get 4 aaa batteries for under the rear cover. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. Get a wall-charger for a Tom Tom One GPS to read test results in your home. Get a cigarette-lighter cable for a Tom Tom One to review results in the car. Get a USB cable to update it. EBAY has it.
THE "ACTUAL" SOLUTION:" On my 2000, the problem exists within the SKIM immobilizer. Remove the steering column cover by removing the single screw that holds the bottom portion on, then separate the two halves. Thereafter, unscrew the immobilizer upon removing the wiring connection, and carefully remove the round portion that goes around the ignition key tumbler. Carefully separate the two halves of the immobilizer and you'll see two relatively large solder points. They attach the wire that runs within and around the key tumbler. If you look closely, possibly using a magnifying glass, you'll see hairline cracks in the solder. If so, re-flow the old solder with some new solder and reinstall. Then, look at the lower half of your steering column cover. See that long boss that the screw you removed runs in? Take a Dremel and remove half of it long ways, leaving the half that isn't slamming into your immobilizer every time you tilt your steering down (Courtesy of Chrysler). Oh, and if you tilt the steering down, further hold it there, and the car starts when you turn your key, then this is likely your problem. I ran my car that way for years before figuring this out... cheers!
I've had the problem multiple times I guarantee if you check the ground wire in the driver side door harness you'll find the wire is broken which will not communicate to the cluster it may also control your power windows and your overhead temperature and direction of travel sometimes it would start with the door closed most of the time it would not start with the door open cuz the wire was not connecting and a Telltale sign would be if the door courtesy light was not on with the door open it would tell me that that alarm wire in the door was not connecting let me know how you make out

Frank did you have to reprogram the key and did the pcm need to be programmed to the vin?
Outstanding! Sorry we didn't see the wrapup, however, you gave us plenty of great lessons in this one. Thanks for taking the time to take us along!
Super good, I miss seeing more new vid's like this. Love your work, Keith. Thanks.
Way to demonstrate the PCI, SCItx and SCIrx! All good facts to know!

By the time he find that problem, he will be rich
Love these data line diagnostics videos!!!
Nice diagnosis Keith and it's nice when the you nail it with the first couple connectors.
Wat first couple connector,?I didn't see the problem solved, n I'm waiting to see the new video, with the problem solved.

Wow- great video. Glad I stumbled across this! Your skills are reminiscent of Paul Danner's. Wish you success on your channel
Good job. I get your frustration and time limited situation dealing with customers that need their cars.
Nice diagnoses . Diagnosing a bad PCM can be kind of hard sometimes.
Will buying a 4tunner to replace my 02 GC do the trick??
Jeep, Jeep, Jeep, it's what's in the shop at any given time.
How do you spell Jeep? J.U.N.K
Awesome good video and diagnosis Kieth thankyou for sharing. cheeeeeeeeers

Love the vice grips on the hood supports.
Nicely done, thanks for sharing.
Can you do a quick video on the wave kit please.
another great one be safe god bless
LOL Keith you got the connector kit put together by the same guy who made the LoadPro...looks good on paper but lets you down in the field :D
Keith dropped an L.P. - bomb. :)
The Load Pro comment got me again 🤣
those Chrysler pcms are something else, strange stalling, no starts, injector fuse blowing, when in dought change them out on those years. Great work,
Another great video with BRILLIANT content. By far the best communication diagnostic skills on you tube
GRACIAS KEITH.....✔
Damn I love your channel. Keep it up!
+JUSTIN ATV definitely appreciate that brother. And I'll do my best
Another great video buddy
Paul Mayou thanks , very glad you enjoyed it
You make it look so easy!
Thumbs up and shared. What year is this Jeep?
You would be proud of me. I have done som DIY's on my own. I will have a video question for you shortly.
+A VIEW IS A VIEW 2002 I think it was , I mentioned in the beginning of the video. And shoot me a question anytime
Thanks . I am sorry that I missed it. I taped my question a little while ago. I will post it tonight. Greatly appreciate it.

New Level Auto thanks brotha I'm new at this so I greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks for the link I'm definitely going to check it out and do my homework on it.
+SKO NYC you're here in NYC?
New Level Auto yea I live in the lower East Side Manhattan
+SKO NYC so hop on the Ferry and stop down one day . Figure out where you're at and what you'll need to help you on your way to being better than me 👍
Instead of s pop tent, (which are big and unwieldy, heavy, and take up lots of room.) would you consider a beach type, or patio table type collapsible umbrella?
Unless you put hazardous waste stickers on it, and smeared a lil dog poop on it, every once in a while!
roadkill5333 believe it or not , if I placed anything on the roof I would need a D.O.T license to use the van off the Island
New Level Auto make the pipe resemble a rogue nuclear bomb.
No one will ever see it.
Great work Keith, I hope there's a follow up vid.👍
I'm waiting for it,,,,the video
Seems like every time I replace a PCM its a Chrysler product it's no secret Chrysler Control modules suck, will they every get it right?
bryan916 No.
Good info
+Ozzstar sometimes that happens 😁
Great work as always 👍
I see you have the official chrysler hood prop tool in use also (vice grips) ;)
Thanks for sharing Keith , what brand of tablet is that , looks like it works well for the pico
surface pro4
Are them Vice Grips not the most important tool considering 35%-40% of the autos need them LOL 😀
So, were you able to fix the problem? If so what's the video, and/or what's the solution?
Last screen shows the explanation. The PCM was replaced and programmed and all is well with the vehicle now
Geeat video once agian 😎
So, if we're lucky, we can hope to see a decent diag vid about once a month. Right?
better than none ehh?
Nice job, Keith. I enjoyed following your logic for testing. Video quality is better as well.
New Level Auto uh oh
New Level Auto I thank you for your honest reply. Well we own it now.no goin back..with your vids ,I will never get complacent. Will always strive to be like you amigo.
Javier Rocha no sir ... your goal must be to be better than me 😉
New Level Auto omg,that's a tall order..😂😂😂
so there is two types of code running thu the data bus?? did the overhead and dash work differently with the pcm unplugged? curious minds want to know. question everything!!!
richard cranium ah, so you wanted me to show the comm back up with the pcm unplugged Right? Should've showed it. Next time definitely. This is why I love your input
correct. love your videos .i just like visual confirmations.been bit enough that that one time in a thousand finds me. and it never hurts to double check something
btw nice little intro banner
Wow im having the same issue, 4.7 1999, do you have the Follow up Vid?
I do not . PCM was replaced and programmed and all worked out well.
Where did you get them replacement PCM?
+Jereme Dempsey this one cane from Cardone Industries. Which is like rolling the dice BTW.
@@NewLevelAuto Would you recommend the MOPAR reman one from RockAuto over Cardone?
I know this is an old video but do you have any recommendations for a decent windows tablet in 2021 ? I've been looking to buy one for exactly what you're using this one for in this video.
Hi Kieth. I have been trying to find that long probing tool that pierces the wire. Where did u get that tool? Thank u!!
Can u put a pcm from any model or does it have to be exact same like year and motor size
What laptop were you using? I need to get me one with a detachable screen. Less bulk

Good diagnostic amigo. Nice. Video saludes noelmatute
Why does the video become smaller format at about 16 min through the video
Does any of this have to deal with an aftermarket key or is it a computer issue
Just a bad computer on this one
maybe the problem with the PCMs is a venting problem causing moisture to build up in side the unit?
I shut off my truck lock it and notice the time on stereo won't shut off, and the buttons on doors stay illuminated is this normal? is this gonnavdrain my battery? how do i fix this every other light is off except for the time on stereo and the illuminated buttons on doors only .its a 2000 jeep cherokee laredo
Sounds like a failed door afar switch. It will turn all consumers off after 30 minutes with no change of input to body control module
WoOoOoOoOo! I love this kind of videos!
Just one question: how do you know is the PCM bad and not a sensor connected to the PCM that is causing the hold up?
Moving Up Diy I love your question!!! This is why I can't wait till you get here. Was the data voltage held high or low ?
New Level Auto It was held high, 7.4v
+Moving Up Diy so how many sensors have you ever heard of that hold a voltage high or become shorted to voltage . Only one that would come to mind for me is the o2 sensors. So I just use the logic that for it to be held high I want to look for something that has the ability to bleed voltage like a failed drop down resistor . We know where those are mainly found Right? Ecm/pcm so it makes for a faster logical approach. Notice that the asd did not need to be turned on in order to see th high line voltage as well? Again that makes me think more along the lines of a module failure
New Level Auto Now that's all cleared up! Makes perfect sense! Thanks brother.
yep wish you had i have a 2004 grand 4.7 doing that and cant find whats wrong some body help me god bless
Mine does that after 30 min my RPM drops like it wants to shut off but cranks back up to reg. RPM ?! Does anyone knows what could be and no check engine light on what makes it more tricky 🤔
I have a 01 grand Cherokee that I believe the anti-theft system is faulty. I was told to change the pcm box and that would solve the problem.
Iv'e seen allot of videos with the Jeeps PCMs getting the green crusty's on the circuit boards, maybe this one has it too!
New Level Auto: I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee that eats all energy up. Wish u was close to the eastern shore.
Awesomeness
i would have figured this out in a couple days
Lol lol you loi
I ran my car that way for years before figuring this out... cheers!
Not in this case . It was indeed a failed PCM as shown at the end of video . But thanks for the input
I've had the problem multiple times I guarantee if you check the ground wire in the driver side door harness you'll find the wire is broken which will not communicate to the cluster it may also control your power windows and your overhead temperature and direction of travel sometimes it would start with the door closed most of the time it would not start with the door open cuz the wire was not connecting and a Telltale sign would be if the door courtesy light was not on with the door open it would tell me that that alarm wire in the door was not connecting let me know how you make out
+repoconn did you watch till the end ?
