  • Today at the Mill Brook Railroad, we clean up an old derailment, give a LocoJack demonstration, unload a bunch of rail, bleach the flat car decks and see a lot of slippage due to weeds on the track.

There's a story to that spot. It's not a joint at all. That's where a tree fell on the track and flattened the rails. I hammered them back into shape and couldn't get the dip out.

re: your weed control.....why not set up an electrical (battery) pump and sprayer operation on the flat car next to the tank car, and fill (or partially fill) the tank car with weed killer. A few fittings and hose connections and you'd be ready to go. You probably wouldn't want to use Roundup, but a vinegar and water solution would be safe around the chickens, and would work wonders...... just a thought. John M,

It is a good thought and the reason I built the tank car. I need to go back and create mounting points for the spray boom and pump. A lead off the locomotive will power it.

What a fantastic railway where that track looks to be sunk or flattened we have a vibration fork and spade made from a old JCB 3cx we stick the forks in and lose the ballast then lift the track with the back actor then squeeze ballast under the track quite a project to make but beets doing it by hand love the locomotive and flats that tanker is awesome too

There is a salt water mixture thats very effective on most weeds, the stronger you make it, the better it works.

@@MillBrookRailroad How about just making a track lifter for the railroad, and use a hydraulic jack to bend the section straight again. The lifter will come in useful for repacking ballast in future, and just needs to have a pair of braces under the car to convert from track lift to rail repair, changing the counter force area from the bogies to a small section. Use one of the regular flat cars, they look strong enough to handle the loading, plus the side mountings are in the right place already, to use for the jacking points.

I always found bleach only changed the mold colors. To really get at it, mix up some baking soda and vinegar. Let it fizz and do it's thing and then smear it all over the cars. It will get nice and deep down in the wood and work it's magic. THen after its good and scrubbed up and taken care of, and rinsed down a day or two later, come back in with bleach and water for the win!
I love seeing the tank car on the line. Any option at all for pressurizing it with a few PSI of air and spraying that eco friendly weed spray that I saw you use in a more recent video I believe it was?
