I had trouble fingerpicking with a finger on each string so I ended up using my thumb only I feel like it goes so fast but that how I feel whenever I first learn a song from youtube
I used to use just my thumb too, but as you get to harder fingerpicking pieces, thumb only really starts to hamper you. I suggest you have your thumb to pick the G and C strings, pointer for E string, and middle for A string. Its hard at first put just practice picking patterns with those fingers a do lots of repetition. Once you get it down it feels really great!
Like Aden said it’s easier to use your thumb but it’s worth grinding to learn how to use each finger. It’ll make you exponentially better. It’s like when you start lifting weights. It may be easier to use your back but you’ll get so much better much quicker if you spend the first bit learning proper form. I hope you’re sticking to it!
