  • I decided to go fly around the area on Memorial Day Weekend, on Sunday before the thunderstorms grounded me. I had to contend with frequent high wind speed warnings, faster than 15mph in front of the storms. I drove a couple hundred miles around the area, also checking out multiple water towers, rivers / dams, and ended back up at Canyon Lake in the afternoon. (I'm working on a Water Tower video that showcases the more interesting water towers that I've found, mostly in smaller cities or on top of older buildings. No deadline set for publishing that one yet.)
    Canyon Lake has nearly 2 dozen public boat ramps that are free for use by the general public (plus some inside county parks that require paid admission). It's a first come, first serve, sort of traffic and parking mess, but somehow it all worked out for the boaters. There were even a few families who just used the free access to the nearby shoreline to get some swimming or kayaking done. There are also multiple marinas that are public or members only scattered around the area.
    A private airport is located on the north side of the lake, but I was far enough away that it didn't matter. I've got the cellphone number of the airport manager and sent him a text advisement of my activities just in case however. Using the AirMap app makes your life so much simpler when it comes to flying legally.
    Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country in the United States. Construction of Canyon Dam began in 1958 to provide both flood control and water conservation. Impoundment of the lake began in 1964, and the lake was filled to its conservation level in 1968. Canyon Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir formed on the Guadalupe River in Comal County by Canyon Dam, which is located about sixteen miles northwest of New Braunfels. The dam, lake, and all adjacent property are managed by the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers. Water rights, waste water treatment, and hydroelectric generating facilities are managed by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. Construction of the dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The reservoir serves to provide flood control and water conservation for the communities downstream from the dam. The lake is also a popular recreational destination. [Source: WIkipedia]
    Canyon Lake Boat Ramp #7 is on the south side of the lake and, if you didn't have a good address for your GPS, you would have a hard time finding it. Another member of the San Antonio Drones community on Facebook had mentioned that he would be at this particular location and several others indicated an interest in going. I was the only drone in the air while I was there on Sunday afternoon, but the original drone operator who instigated this, was out paddling his kayak in the lake. I didn't know it was him at the time, or I would have buzzed him. Instead, I've added a special treat for him in this video, singling him out with some graphics and text. You'll know it when you see it. [EDIT - Turns out I didn't identify the right guy. That's a ski jet that I circled in the video. oops!}
    I searched hard to find just the right audio track to add to this video, but Epidemic Sound was up to the challenge. As you may know, drones do not record audio because all you would hear would be their propellers. You can record audio via your tablet or phone connected to the remote controller, but that isn't always optimal due to background noise and unwanted conversations, plus the video quality on your tablet / phone is never as good as the 4K quality stored on the SD card in the drone.

    I do take requests from folks that want to see different types of aerial photography / videos. I tend to avoid flying in residential neighborhoods because there are too many folks who see a drone and think it is spying on them. I'm not sure what they think would be that interesting, or how a relatively noisy drone could sneak up on anyone. I've got the quietest propellers available on the market (Master Airscrew) on my drones and you can still hear it until it is at least a hundred feet up in the air.
    I flew the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone for this video, recording in 4K 24fps. Video Editing software was Wondershare Filmora 9. Music was from Epidemic Sound. Get your free 30 day trial from Epidemic Sound by clicking on this link: www.epidemicso...
