    She did this in one take by herself on her MacBook. Makes it even more incredible. When Kesha was shopping around her demo, she had two versions of herself. One is the version we hear on the radio, the other was more like this track. The studios picked the version we ended up with. Luckily we still get glimmers of beauty like this from her though.

    I think why she "over did it" was because this it's an emotional song and you can hear she's crying. it's beautiful y'all. stop hating and learn how to love. this world is fucking full of hate and it doesn't need to be like that. and you contributing to hate doesn't do jack

    I was raised on Bob Dylan, and on very little pop. But I appreciate people for all genres of musical talent. But for any artists of any genre to perform a cover to a Dylan song to this great extent is a rare an extreme occasion. I have maybe never heard a song covered with such wall deep emotion it's as if she wrote every word of it herself or her own life. And anybody who doesn't recognize that, is just being hypocritical or stuck up. Get over yourself!

    Kesha really is the best in pop when it comes to making heartbreaking songs. Don't Think Twice, Goodbye, Sunday Morning, Wonderland, Innocence and Pills, The Harold Song, Love Into the Light, etc. All are such beautiful, emotional songs. She's such an underrated artist because her record label won't let her release anything other than party songs as singles.

    • @Hoosje11
      @Hoosje11 11 лет назад +3

      I'm so sick honestly of people only looking up to her as a drunk talentless party girl. Damn, she is so much more and by far the most underrated artist in the industry. She's got more than Perry, Rihanna, Gaga and whonot. Sigh. Innocence and Pills is flawless by the way. Love that. More people need to hear that song.

      Kesha Fan There's obviously more money in being labeled as trashy. Same reason Miley's album topped the charts after all her shenanigans. But if she wants to produce that sort of music, she's going to be judged for THAT. Not what she 'could' be doing.

    it breaks my heart how she changed the lyrics - " you once loved a woman, a child, you know, i gave you my heart but you wanted my soul" and "you just kinda wasted my precious life" - this is incredibly sad in relation to what she's been going through. There's so much emotion in this and I can't stop listening, though it makes me sad.

    She releases those radio songs to make money. She's smart by faking dumb. It's almost common knowledge now that she sneaks into university lectures and scored a near-perfect SAT score in high school. She writes everything that she releases and has the know-how to make really gorgeous music, but chooses not to because it won't be profitable. At least she used to, now she wants to escape her shitty contract. Regardless, how can you say anything negative about this? It has so much passion, it's a release of emotions.

    It's this song that makes me think that like ten or fifteen years from now, we're gonna find out that Kesha was nothing at all like what she was presented and that a lot of the more horrifying offerings of her musical career were not entirely her choice and that behind the scenes there may have been a lot of manipulation or abuse going on and that maybe the truth was that there was a young woman who wanted to make some decent, fun music but the people with money and power said, "Nah, let's get you all Britney'd up here".
    Because, let's face it, the opportunities for female artists who wanna be actual artists rather than pretty pop mouth pieces are slim. Not saying that there's anything wrong with women who wanna be entertainers primarily, but I'm wondering how many of the female artists we love to hate for presenting in Kesha's usual style hate performing that was as much as we hate seeing and hear it. I wonder how many actually want to ever use autotune and how many were told it's autotune or no tune by producers.

      +Meg Freeman What Bubbles said--that's basically already happened. Turns out Kesha's really smart, got near perfect scores on the SAT, wrote hella songs for other artists before becoming a recording artist herself, and her 'persona' was manufactured by her producer--which is particularly upsetting when you consider it seems he's been emotionally and sexually abusive towards her.

      kesha, without doubt is much much more than what they present her to be....Kesha is just an artist that has been chewed up and spit out by the industry...an industry which didnt let her practice her art and true talent...I beleive Kesha is an incredibly artistic, fantastically intelligent woman that only presents the way that she does because "they" told her to, to become famous

    I am a huge Dylan fan, Kesha not so much but I am a musician and I play a jazz version of this song. I focus on the musical concepts, she focused on the emotional idea. I love it. She said in an interview that when she was coveting this song, she did it as a rough track on her bed but she decided to keep it as the one on the record. That's what your supposed to do with covers, make the song your own. All these people saying OMG she's terrible, awful, are just people who think they are cool and better than everybody else for liking Bob Dylan. Kesha is very talented and this is a great cover.

    I am a huge Dylan fan and I think this is a stunning interpretation. When my daughter told me Kesha was singing this song I was completely prepared to hate it. What she does is honor the original by infusing her experience into the song and making it her own. Dylan himself does the same thing every night on stage, sometimes to the extent that you can't even tell what song he is singing.

  • @kristychadwick9418
    @kristychadwick9418 11 лет назад +1

    yes, in the interview she explains her process. she recorded this song while sitting on her bed. she listened to Bob Dylan's version until it triggered her thoughts and feelings, then recorded it on her garage band, while crying. its a powerful song for her. they tried to record it, and get the same emotion but it just wasnt the same. so they left her original version on the cd.

    @intoximacated the gasps are because she was crying, she recorded the singing on her laptop, just to try it out, and later decided this was her best interpretation of the song. The strings were added later. It's just her own interpretation of the song, which I think is better than just to mindlessly try to copy someone.

    Removing any perceived or actual motivation or intent ascribed to the artist --- with or without merit --- (you can argue that stuff all you want if you are that kind of exceptionally tedious person) this is an amazing cover. I'm as against stupid people using money-signs in their name as anybody else --- but you simply cannot dent the unique and powerful arrangement exhibited by this performance. Sure Dylan has some rarefied place in the Pantheon of American Folk (who can forget his amazing contribution to the 1986 "Band of the Hand" soundtrack} --- but give this girl her due. She batted this ball right over the wall of Ennui Stadium.

    A little background info regarding that:
    The vocals on this were actually a Garage Band test recording she did at home and were not even supposed to be used for the final product. But Bob Ezrin thought this was perfect for the song, so they went with it and built the instrumentals around it and, in fact, didn't edit it at all, so this is the raw recording. As far as I know that is.

      Emma Ah I can't wait to see what she'll do post-Luke. I love the indie experimental feel to a song like Lover and stuff like Past Lives and Sunday Morning. Kesha needs to go indie. She's creative and musically brilliant. She can afford to go indie bc she has a dedicated fan base and I don't think she cares too much about major commercial success anymore. I think she just wants to freedom to do whatever she wants and not be held back by greedy label bosses.

    Back in December of 2013 my boyfriend dropped me off at home at 5:00 in the morning. 80ft from my driveway he was ran off the road & he hit a tree. It killed him instantly. As soon as I realized I had left my cell in his car I walked down the road to my neighbors house so he could run me to my boyfriend's house to get it. We drove up on the accident not knowing what was going on. This entire song fits our whole situation for that night. I can't listen to it without my heart being completely rip to shreds. But I listen anyway because it makes me feel close to him. Her rawness in this song is beyond measurement.

    People reacting negatively to Kesha having changed the meaning of the song by making it more emotional is sort of absurd considering that Bob Dylan is a folk singer and folk music is essentially traditional music that is slightly adapted generation by generation. A large portion of his songs are reinterpretations of older songs, like The Girl from the Northern Country is based on Scarborough Fair, a song from the Middle Ages.

None will match Waylon on this one, sorry Bob, but I have a new found respect for this Lil lady and I NEVER thought I'd say that. So silence the hate, if nothing else she knows who Bob Dylan is and that means that there is hope for music yet.

  • @lavonaffair
    @lavonaffair 11 лет назад +2

    Bob Dylan never actually meant this to be a sad love song. In the inner sleeve of the album he mentions this. I guess any song can be made to sound sad if you pretend to cry as you sing it. Whatever sells I guess. I prefer the original, where you can focus on the poetry of the words and the music, rather than just his voice. Each to their own.

    • @TheHabitableZone
      @TheHabitableZone 11 лет назад

      Kesha and Bob Ezrin who produced the song decided to reinterpret it as a suicide note. And she's clearly not pretending to cry. A documentary filmmaker who worked with Kesha said she often had emotional breakdowns.

    • @lavonaffair
      @lavonaffair 11 лет назад

      Are you talking about the documentary film series produced by Kemosabe Entertainment, who just so happened to be her label? Think the label had any influence on her presentation? Believe what you want buddy. Personally I think turning a good song into a suicide note to make it more interesting and relatable to fans is very bad taste.

    • @TheHabitableZone
      @TheHabitableZone 11 лет назад +3

      Rory O'Flaherty It was filmmaker Steven Greenstreet who said it, not someone from Kemosabe. And Dr. Luke the head of Kemosabe demanded huge royalties for himself or he wouldn't approve the documentary. So, you can bet Greenstreet hates Luke. He and Kesha's brother produced that show and Dr. Luke took most of the money. Add to that, Luke and Kesha hate each other too. She's spent the last year trying to break from his label.
      Kemosabe had no influence over this cover at all. It was all Bob Ezrin (the guy who produced songs for Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Nine Inch Nails, etc.) and Kesha. Remember this song was done for a charity album, so her label didn't profit from it. And didn't Bob Dylan have songs about suicide? I don't see the problem other than someone looking for an excuse to put someone else down.

      Rory O'Flaherty It's easy to think Kesha's crying is fake from her happy, upbeat and self-confident persona. But people like that are often hiding inner turmoil. Kesha has talked about times when she felt suicidal, taking medication for anxiety, and suffering from insomnia. She also talked about being bullied for her weight and looks in school. We know now that she's been anorexic and bulimic since she was 18. While these are genetically based mental illnesses, they're triggered by poor self image and self doubt. Her mom and other people who know her said she was verbally and emotionally abused by the head of her record label for years.
      So, think when she was recording this song. Bob Ezrin had talked about re-interpreting it as a suicide note. She's alone in her room doing a practice run using her laptop. She's dealing with very dark and terrible mental illnesses and she's got her label head Dr. Luke constantly telling her she's fat, ugly, and a failure. So, she had a breakdown. This was not long after she had a breakdown on stage. Look for the video "Kesha cries during The Harold Song (Live full song!)" So, she was having problems in her life when she did this song. But it was Bob Ezrin who decided to use this recording rather than the studio recordings she made.
      People forget that celebrities are human and that they have real problems. So, things like this seem calculated and fake. After Kesha almost starved herself to death recently, it should be obvious that she is mentally fragile and having real problems in her life. She had to have been in a dark place for her eating disorders to become that severe.

      I agree that celebrities are real people and may suffer many terrible things in their private lives. I also know that what celebrities tell us, what their family and friends tell us, and what the media tells us can all be an orchestrated lie (yes, even a breakdown on stage) created to increase popularity. Things like eating disorders, suicide attempts, illnesses, drug use, everything can be fabricated. And I don't think there's anybody on here that can say they know for definite that has or hasn't happened in her case. Should it be the case that what she and others have said is true, I wish her luck, and may she find peace and happiness in her future.
      Oh, and CAWeb, yes Dylan did reference suicide, briefly, amongst many other things in his creative list of lyrics, but he didn't once write a whole song about it, or need to (in my opinion) fake cry throughout a song to make people feel sad and empathise. Everyone can believe what they want, but personally, I'm not buying it. As I said at the start, each to their own.

    I will never understand comments like "nothing like the original" "nothing can top Dylan's" or whatever.
    If nothing can fucking top it, then why coming here and leave those kind of comments? Seriously, if you're not into covers then keep listening the originals, period.
    I happen to love covers and tributes, and this one's actually great. It's a reinterpretation of a song that gives it a whole new feeling.

    The 'poignant' was intended from the beginning because it was supposed to be a re-interpretation of the lyrics from another perspective, but was obviously intensified during singing them because of things she has gone through/is going through in her life herself that the lyrics reminded her of.
    You should read the Rolling Stone article about this recording if you want to know about the back-story.

    @Abaddon133 thank you for pointing it out. "Sunday Morning" is also a song in which she sings in a very touching way. Kesha's not just a trashy radio artist, like many call her. She's a talented artist and people who judge her just don't know her enough.

    I like this version, but it's not like I'm gonna download it. It's very sad interpretation of Dylan classic. I like Elvis' version too. It's a very sparse arrangement and the instruments seem off kilter from her pitch. Ke$ha's voice is way out in front of the mix, loud and clear. The fact that's she's crying throughout the song makes it difficult to replay over & over like her other stuff. Dylan would be proud. Hope she sings an uptempo Dylan song on her upcoming tour. I'm debating going to see her in Orlando.

      Yeah, this is great for listening once in every few years. Kesha sang Bob Dylan's "It aint me babe" at the Billboard Music Awards and got a standing ovation. And she also sang his song "I shall be released" on her tour many times. She really respects him and is inspired by him

      @halo3jocky 7 лет назад +3

      Cockoff Gewgle Dylan himself admits that his voice is trash and nasally, I'd much rather listen to a pretty, musically inclined voice than spoken word poetry at the top of someones lungs

    • @cockoffgewgle4993
      @cockoffgewgle4993 7 лет назад

      Wrong. Dylan's voice was largely an affectation (until later in his career when it was fucked due to chain-smoking). He preferred the rough-edged vocal because it was more "authentic" and suited to the style of music and sound he wanted. He could produce a conventionally lovely vocal performance perfectly fine, listen to Nashville Skyline. If you think Dylan is "spoken word poetry" then you know nothing about music.

    I don't understand why people are fighting. If you don't like Ke$ha's pop music, then ok. That doesn't mean she doesn't have an incredible voice. Not only does it show in this, but all of her old unreleased songs are filled with beautiful vocals.

    @edawgrules really? cuz haha funny thing is, Ke$ha isnt a "trashy pop singer", her record label wanted her to sing pop because thats who signed her and thats whats in. She grew up on this kinda music and she's actually AMAZING without auto tune. This is one of her favorite songs, so she was crying when she recorded this, that's why it sounds like this.

    That's definitely in my cannon of Dylan covers. It's damn powerful. I used to think that his work could only be best appreciated when expressed by another, and as much I may go to Hendrix first for that song, Dylan's work first hand gives me a beautiful, lingering, longing...until the 70's era.

This cover has got to be one of the top 10 Dylan covers of all time. maybe top 5. Absolutely incredible. When I bought the 3 disc Chimes Of Freedom years ago. Maybe in her interpretation she's saying how many of us try and to say everything is alright and we've moved (her singing the song) on while we're still doing pretty bad inside (her singing the song while crying and just the overall tone). I know I can relate to it in that way while slowly moving toward Dylan's way.

    My point is: what mainstream artists and producers do is perform a balancing act between two things that are very hard to combine. Those artists tried to merge elements of "old" and "new" music, and when they succeed to create a functional piece of work, they hit the mainstream and become famous. And THEN they receive flack from both those sides equally, and are hated by one half of the world and loved by the other with almost no middle ground.
