You’re absolutely right, I definitely wouldn’t swap for a driveway. I did say on Twitter the other week that I take my hat off to anyone doing winter car work outdoors. (Actually I’ll keep my hat on if it’s all the same to you, but you know what I mean.)
Same here! I took up wire brazing in the 9th grade; even made a nifty bronzed belt buckle (in the days when belts were 2-1/2" wide--that dates myself!)
@@simonhodgetts6530 I know what you mean - maybe it was a subconscious throwback to when I watched St Elsewhere, Crystal Maze and arty French films with under-dressed ladies in the early years of Channel 4 🤓
Here in the U.S. none of the Accords even close to looking like this one. Early Hondas had rust issues. My '14 Accord is rust free and I live where there is more salt than snow on the roads!
Great work! That cream/beige coloured coating under the underseal on the inner arch/wheel well is Honda's original factory primer coating and it holds up quite well considering the age of the car. My 1992 Rover 216 - which is virtually a Honda underneath anyway - has the same coatings.
Yes, it’s painted on really thick! A solid 2mm coating of it. Just a shame the outer edge lets it down…my challenge will be to reproduce that level of protection afterwards. Hydrate80 and Gravitex or Gravi-guard are the likely weapons, plus some good seam sealer. Probably some Dynax wax afterwards too, I’m not doing this job again next year 😊
I used to work in the bulk materials handling industry. The technique you used with welding rods is exactly what experienced fabricators used for making complex chute work between equipment.
I have this very same problem with my volvo 480. I'd love to tackle this myself, but I'm short of a welding kit, English wheel, materials and a dry space. Oh, couple that with lack of experience on any of this and it spells for a disaster on my behalf 😂😂 I am going to save my pennies and get it done professionally. I admire your grit and determination, sir! 👍🏻
Dry space is critical! Cold is bad enough, being outdoors would be a definite no from me. It’s more peer pressure than grit - I’d be tempted to park it up for a bit and take up Lego or something, but having promised on RUclips that I’d do it myself, I’d better get on with it!
I’m really happy with the RTech welder too - this is my first time on car bodywork but I’ve done quite a bit of stainless steel furniture making and tool repair with it and it’s so reliable and easy to set up. I’ve got outer arch repair panels, although they’re rare, and there aren’t any inner arch/wing pieces.
I agree! The others were just regular estate cars really - Honda went pretty dull after this generation of Accord (though they've had some more adventurous designs again since).
@@GrandThriftAuto They certainly have. I had a very vanilla but super reliable Jazz, and have just sold a CRZ which was super fun. I have 3 Honda motorcycles so as you can tell I’m a big fan!!!
Great Video! Just Stumbled across your channel actually. Im Restoring a Honda Civic MB6 and i have the same issue as you in this video where the Rust has gone up into the wheel arch. i was looking into getting a Metal Bending Brake to fabricate some of the sill sections do you have any recommendations? :)
Thanks! The brake I use is from Metz Tools - it would benefit from a better clamping mechanism (which will be easy to add) but is otherwise good, and very well priced. Love the CAD feature in this one, was superb at explaining the detail of the thing. A good watch
Thanks! The CAD bit actually helped me get my head around it, there’s a lot going on in that rear corner.
Your doing a great job.
I'd take your cold shed over my driveway any day.
Struggling to get anything done myself.
Keep up the good work.

The welding rod / steel panel on the workbench looks like one of my old art college projects!
😁 Now there’s an idea - if I can get a gallery interested maybe it could help finance the project!

An excellent watch, appreciate the care you put into these vids. Happy Christmas.
Thanks Ben, glad you enjoyed it, and a very happy Christmas to you too 😊
Ha, well done, I admire your perseverance! Nice computer animation 👍 Good luck, Martin.
Thanks! 😁
Very good - also reminds me of a 90s TV station ident!

@@GrandThriftAuto Besides it's rather more difficult to fabricate a Honda Aerodeck wheel arch out of Legos!
Are there no repair panels available for it? Also, good to see another R Tech welder user on here! I've got the same one and I'm very impressed by it.

I am looking for the Tailgate open ( damper ), do you have any online shop recommendation ?
The last ‘proper’ aero deck… the subsequent Rover400/Honda civic estate did not deserve the title… in my humble opinion of course.

Hi! Why don't you do a similar show with a Volvo 480? Have similar problems with my car. 🙂
I probably would if I had a Volvo 480 😁The principle must be similar though - good luck!
