I was immediately drawn to the Impressionist style of this piece - it's been a minute since I finished that playlist and they're always so interesting to look at.
The poor French probably listened to Dr. Zucker's "they only finished a small amount" like, "Hey! We cleared about a third of the effort - give us a break!" 😂😭
It was inspiring to hear about the incredible man-power that went into completing this project. It made me feel I could fly a little farther in my daily efforts.
"...it's beautiful, but it was also a kind of hell." Art really does imitate life.
It was sobering to read about the dangers that faced these people as they worked at the video's end - I did appreciate the name change back to Culebra in 2000, though. That felt like the right decision.

Conquering or taming nature was a common theme and seen as unabashedly good. This work makes me think of The Fighting Temeraire with all the mist and smoke, the new world of the engine. For me, the tired little men are in contrast to the all powerful, never tired machines clawing at the earth which the workers must serve. Men created those machines, and now they drive us. The machines do great things which are justly celebrated, but this work seems to hint at the human cost.

That painting is a treat and so rarely on view. We were delighted to be able to see it and to make the video.
