😂. How come this was recorded in 1929 and it’s now a hundred years later and I know and love that tune? It must be a good one to have lasted all this time.
Great stuff! Choral arrangements by W.C. HANDY‼️ Lived in New Orleans well into his 80s, maybe 90s, just missing the 21st century. Joni Mitchell dedicated her album, Pork Pie Hat, to W.C. Handy.
Sorry to be a kia, but Handy lived in Harlem and Yonkers from 1917 until his death at 84, in 1958. He lived in Memphis from ‘09 until his move to NY. We revere him here in Soulsville.
Bessie Smith. The finest American blues singer ever. Love how the saloon scene with Bessie, her band and all the singers were recorded with one overhead ribbon mic. Well done for 1929. Bravo Bessie. Show them how it's done.
The RCA Photophone Technology was developed as a Stand-Alone technology before being adjoined to Motion Picture Film. It was still a film-based technology required developing to be able to be played. It also had the option of doing stereo and other multi-channel audio options when used in the stand alone audio format but nobody really took advantage of that at the time. It was predated by the Disc-Based Vitaphone sound equipment by about a year.
I love Bessie, but to really appreciate the blues you gotta live them!!! I started listening to her when I was 15 and now I’m 70! She was ahead of her time!!!
Jimmy was an a$$hole!😂 I hope when I go to a bar & start singing the blues that the patrons become my background singers too!😂 Thank you for this classic upload!❤
I'm Brazilian and I'm learning English, so it's hard to understand everything of old English. Anyway, I love ancient things! I love Bessie Smith's songs, she looks a very kind, sweet and lovely woman! 💞
Your English is already very good! I'm fluent in English, but I couldn't hear everything they said clearly. The audio quality of older recordings makes it difficult to understand sometimes.
Haha. Bessie sang the blues but you just know she’d just as soon knock the skinflint out, kick him to the curb and walk away WITH her money roll! Thanks! ❤
Bessy Smith,Queen of the Blues,I have a lot of her recordings,I didn't know that there was actual film footage of her singing,so much passion in her voice, better than today's rubbish pop divas
Some voice she had! Absolutely beautiful!
St. Bessie Smith, patron saint of the blues and broken hearts all around. 💔

I know the song, and I know a hoochie mama when I see her :-)
*95 years. ❤ Some of us are old souls here in 2024.
Great stuff!
