Thanks boys - we are so proud! It was the most emotional performance I’ve ever seen in person. We were front row and Sheldon was literally in tears walking off stage. So fab for him. Sick of all the haters by the way. Why can’t people just be happy. Geez!
Seriously? Ok, the performance was emotional indeed but the song is average and very much 'have heard it before' which is actually the case so far with most Australian entries up to now.
@@jutjubow We can say that with many countries though. This is a true masterpiece. The emotion of this song. The lyrics are just incredible. Watching Eurovision for 35 years and have never felt this much emotion. STUNNING!!! 99% of all entries so far is the same old, same old shite BUT it all depends on the execution and delivery of those vocals. This is top 3 , if not, winner of Eurovision. It will be a big favourite of the jury.
Australia has just ripped it up!! Australia and Italy both have stellar songs this year and I hope one of them (as of now) can win the whole competition. This is up there with Dami Im in 2016 as Australia’s best ever entry and I really hope he can fly the whole way up the leaderboard. Personally, I think the mask is a triumph as even though some may argue that they can’t see him so can’t connect with him, that is what it is like when bullies selfishly ruin a person’s life. The removal of the mask will be one of the most emotional things to hit the Eurovision stage in years as it shows the rebirth of Sheldon after overcoming the struggles. The whole performance, song, singer, vocals, in my opinion are absolutely PHENOMENAL. And this is easily a 10 from me. Currently my joint winner!! Go Australia!!!
I have seen Sheldon perform live and he is such an incredible performer. I am just so happy for him as he has always said that Eurovision was his dream. Well Sheldon you are on your way there and can't wait for Europe to see your musical genius and those amazing vocals. We love you here in Australia!!
On one hand I'm extremely angry that the jury screwed over Voyager, who won the public vote and had the place absolutely banging, but on the other I'm glad if not them than at least its Sheldon. He's a real talent, and has a very defined artist look. Just on vocals alone he is a winner in the making.
The first time I ever saw Sheldon perform was on the voice when he sang boy George’s do you really want to hurt me. George helped him break through his inner barriers. He helped him love himself and create his mantra of take me as I am. During this time, he was targeted by online trolls. Delta, on his return to the voice, moulded him into the performer that we see now. He sings from his heart, sings through the pain. Also, the mask comes back to the first time on the voice. George said that Sheldon was really struggling to find that acceptance, so putting on that “mask” was a way of protecting himself from the world. When asked by George, Sheldon’s response was, his mask was putting on a hoodie, covering up his face and walking past people.
I don't know if I'm that naive but if it's that the case let me be so. I feel so much raw emotion in that performance. He doesn't look to me to show off his vocals which are marvelous. He is not singing either. He is telling us his autobiography. I don't normally root for drag dresses and styles but this has a style which highlights the person in the scene. In my opinion the beaded mask was revealed in the right moment as he was approaching the end of the song and with the right acoustic tone to add on the drama probably symbolising that although the childhood trauma is still there he has become much stronger from that and he can let himself be seen. It's a beautiful act with a nice message which is soooo authentic.
haha William, you are so right. We, Filipinos, are so passionate at everything. I think Sheldon can capitalise on his heritage as that can translate to votes... after all we are one of the biggest diasporas in Europe.
Just a few points: 1) I get why people might not connect with the mask but when he revealed his face that was a moment for me. And I think you should watch his AGT performance where he reveals why he wears the mask while he sings. 2) I don’t get why people are saying it’s too repetitive. Voilà last year was really repetitive but it still was an amazing song with a similar vibe to this song. 3) I think this will do really well for Australia, especially on the big stage. Like William said if they make a few tweaks to the song and brighten the stage up a bit more I think it will do very well. Surely top 10
100% on everything you just said! I connected so much more on the power of removing the mask. It was a statement. But it was the journey of the song and it was the right moment for it to be removed. Especially after knowing his backstory/his masks.
I always get excited when someone with Filipino roots gets to compete in Eurovision because our country is most likely never gonna be in this contest that I've been a fan of for years now! This is definitely a top 5 song!
I know the American version of the ESC has been highly controversial, but I think an Asian version would be so much more interesting (I’ve heard it’s been debated?). The world has heard loads of US-American music, but could learn so much about different Asian countries and cultures via music. I’m curious, is that something you think would work (I’m not up to speed on politics in Asia) or do you prefer just having the European Song Contest? 😊 Anyways, he’s an amazing artist and I agree, he should do very well! ♥️
@@emdove I love the idea of it but realistically, it will take so much time to have a lot of asian countries to be on board. Certain visuals or topics might not be accepted on other countries because of their culture. *YES YES YES MABUHAY FILIPINO UP IN HERE* I love that some half or pure Filipino who is a citizen in another country can join the Eurovision wish our country was also a very huge friend of The EBU...
It was a fantastic top 3 overall. I was hoping Jaguar would get her chance finally, but in saying that absolutely exceptional result regardless with Sheldon's win, the song is just magic!
I just found out about Sheldon having Asperger’s. I watched the performance live and I said to my son who has autism see we are all not the same (not knowing at the time Sheldon has Asperger’s) the words I could relate to through my sons eyes. My son has welcomed me to the world of Eurovision he is obsessed with it. He is only 15 but what he knows about Eurovision is mind blowing, he can tell me the winner of ever year since Eurovision has been going on. Eurovision is his life. So in saying this, this song really has touched my heart, and alot of people could relate to not fitting in the square box. A proud Aussie and so proud of Sheldon for being a voice for people who perhaps don’t have a voice to tell their story.
I agree with Deban about the PR. While he had started doing that with channels such as Aussievision and even here on Wiwibloggs in the lead up to the national final, I honestly think more needs to be done to hear his story more. I honestly think William and Deban should interview him. A lot of people will listen if you both are the ones to do it.
With someone who also has Aspergers, I get why Sheldon is hiding behind his mask. But to all the haters his voice is amazing and he's telling a story that obviously not everyone has heard
I'm glad you both loved Sheldon's performance. I thought it was really touching and relatable, Sheldon's vocals were incredible! Overall really strong in my opinion ♥ 🇦🇺
The passage to the finals is unquestionable. The song is emotional, personal, dramatic and those are its strengths. Personally, I’m missing something, I’m missing a better ending, but that’s just my opinion. Greetings from Croatia. 🇭🇷
This was glorious live. I've rarely seen a performance move an audience like that. Even in the jury final I felt like I was watching a winners reprise. I think the thing with the mask is on Australian TV he's always performed with a mask, so removing it on life national TV is quite a moment
Sorry been flooded - I'm an aspie, mum of two aspie there is a line in this song that drags me back to greeting my oldest in our kitchen everyday after school. This captured what it feels like to be aspergers. I've never seen our story captured by one of our own and not played for laughs by well-meaning others. The mask - isn't for affect. It's what we all wear - the fact that he can take it off it all shows how far he has come. I voted for all three - Voyager is very much the Aussie music scene, Jag's message is so important in our music community and she so brave. Sheldon - for me sheldon was personal. Please stop treating the mask like its a prop. It's not its indicative of what we live with every day, how we fit in with the other two thirds of the community. We're forced to wear it.
16:43 Agreed, thanks William! People always base their judgement on their own experience, and that’s completely normal. But it’s also important to acknowledge that everybody’s expression and feelings are different. You could say… they’re not the same 😌
I have a closer connection to this song!!! Recently I found out a childhood trauma when I remember that my family never supported my creative self. I kept that feeling inside of me for years and when I heard this song it resumes all my feeling about it. So it definetly has a place in my heath!!! Thank you Sheldon!!!
I remember when he was on the voice I begged he would go to Eurovision. When The Netherlands won (my country) I hoped Sheldon would be there that year so I could see Duncan again AND Sheldon whom I loved so much. Sadly he entered a year after, but his entry is SO STRONG

Though I’ve seen his face and watched his other performances, it still surprised me how much more approachable and fragile he looked without the mask - and that, to me, is part of the “journey” William describes. Above all, I think his personal style and preference should be respected. And as someone who struggles with bright lights, I feel like I get the staging. Obviously I don’t know if that’s the reason for the low lights, but I enjoy it tremendously 😊
Great voice, but no one in their right mind can deny that Voyager got absolutely robbed on the night. Classic example of the "industry expert jury" not being on the same page as the public.
@@ruffdriverz hmmmm, not *really* though, were they? Because Voyager very clearly won the public vote (which was capped so it's possible they could have actually had a bigger win there if it wasn't), whereas not only did the jury vote put them at 3rd place, but there was a 1pt difference between 1st and 2nd and a 13pt difference between 2nd and 3rd. Yet, SOMEHOW, there was a total of 5pts difference separating 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th place?!?! And that doesn't seem a little hinky to you?
Sheldon is an incredibale artist! Concerning to his mask, he always wears it. You have to listen to his explanation why he is wearing it, so you will understand what it mean when he took it off. Sheldon is a very emotional singer.
i think the mask works better with subwoolfer because they're playing characters, they're "keith" and "jim" from the moon who are billions of years old, but nobody knows who is "really" behind those masks, so you think of them as the characters not as the performers beneath. with this entry, i think the mask needs to come off much sooner or play into a larger stage narrative of hiding himself before the reveal, right now it just feels like a cool fashion mask until the reveal.
Great commentary both of you, pretty much said what I was going to. The flack against Sheldon has been "he was too emotional". You should not be telling someone with Aspergers they are being too emotional. I can see this being ramped up with the staging in Turin, I'm sure it would have happened for Montagne as well had she not been forced to throw a studio entry due to COVID. Stoked with the entry and am 100% sure he will rip it come Turin.
I have to admit my first time hearing this song, I hated it. It's a song that you grow to love & appreciate. His vocals truly are amazing, love his attire & as for all the people complaining about repetitiveness... I'm calling BS. Conchita Wursts song was just as repetitive so was Voila among many others, still people love those songs. If this style of song is not your cup of tea, that's fine, everyone has different tastes but don't give me BS excuses about repetitiveness as most songs do this.
I like Sheldon a lot 👍🏻 Unfortunately as many times as I have listened to this song, I just can’t remember it after 😞 It is absolutely an amazing performance and his voice is fab but I personally think Australia have had stronger entries before. Still, good luck Australia 🇦🇺 xx 🇬🇧💋
The fact that there is not more light is probably related to autism. As he says it in the lyrics. Bright lights could be very hurting whith this neurotype. I don’t know if this is the first song about autism in Eurovision but i’m really happy is there respresenting it for all of us who struggle with this world.
I had only watched a recap of the australian final so having watched the winning performance afterwards was a revelation to me. Will definitely score exceptionally. I have to say that I fell in love with Jaguar’s performance too and i think i liked her song a tiny tad better 😏
This doesn't feel forced or manufactured at all to me. There is so much rawness and emotion in his performance, and vulnerability too. Its true that people might connect with this more if he wasn't wearing the mask, and I'm torn as to whether I want him to use it or not as well, but for me the emotion comes from the voice and the orchestrations anyway. It's simple but emotive and that's why I love the song so much. It's just powerful to me and the message and the story will resonate with a lot of different people, which I think is what will sell this in Turin. But how well he will do in terms of voting will depend heavily on when he performs among the other ballads of the night, I think.
William, he doesn't need to be seen,he doesn't need to take off the mask. The mask is the one society has forced him to wear to fit in. The symbolism is far more important than "seeing" his emotions through his face. You can "see" his emotions through the lyrics, but the point is not to see anything, but to feel the meaning of every single word amplified by his vocal range. That is why all distractions have been removed. For that to happen. Out of all people, I assumed you would understand, because you have always been able to grasp the meaning and the backstory of songs. Anyway, alll good🙂 12 points from Cyprus xx
Obviously ESC isn't that mainstream here in the PH despite the fact that another Filipino in the name of Vincent Bueno had already participated last year.
Will you do a video about Russia being banned from Eurovision and how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is affecting Eurovision? I feel it's a major story that would be worth covering by you guys.
@@sunoolee9467 Good for Bosnia, but not every war is equal and if Ukraine decides they can't be dealing with it at the same time then thats valid for them to step out.
I like it, it's a bit monotone sometimes but still great. The message spoke to me tho, I also have a small form of Asperger and I used to be bullied because I was very shy, and I didn't have a 'moment' where I took my mask off or something, but more like I grew in it, and people helped me grow more confident, mostly on my new school and my hobbies, it was a sign that it was possible to be loved by others. And now I'm 22 and I'm happier than ever, and done with hiding my true self And to Alex: I don't think 2022 is a weak year at all
I think the costume needs a change. Same vibes, same drama, just a little less bulk. Make the fabric sweeps more gradiose by making the shape of the outfit more defined and less of a blob. Kate's nat final costume was also too much, they stripped it back and it was perfection. Sheldon's needs a similar adjustment, not as drastic as Kate's but a little.
Two great commenters beautifully dissecting such an amazing performance by Sheldon. Loved every minute of the down-to-earth commentary, so on point and constructive!
Add some light to the staging towards the end. He needs to rise from a ring of fire when he takes off the mask to show that even though he is not the same he can rise up above the pain
How is it desided which songs are reviewed by William and Deban? As if they want to say something about choosing specific entries as opposed to others.
My top pick for Aus decide. The whole performance and sheldon's voice is very impressive. The song is ok but His voice and singing ability carried the song for me. I'm still thinking that the instrument need to be louder and heavier (something is missing, maybe more bass or loud orchestra feeling or something) to have a stronger impact on me. Maybe a revamp is needed? The dress is beautiful but i can't see due to lighting, the mask is great but early reveal needed to see his emotion and build good audience connection. Thought? I think He'll do well in the final for sure.
Well this should be in the final. He looks good in the outfit I say keep the mask but explain pre show what it is about like Deban says do more press if he can. It's a contender if done right☮️❤️
It's that Phantom of the Opera quality that I find a bit excessive... it veers too dangerously close to pantomime territory, though thankfully, Sheldon's beautiful voice keeps this tasteful and interesting. Not in my Top 10, I'm afraid, but it deserves the left-hand side of the scoreboard and I hope it ends up there. I'd be very intrigued to hear SR sing other songs, because he's undoubtedly an exceptionally talented singer.
Barbara Pravi and Sheldon. Same quality, same level. Both brought their personal story, they just want us to be included in this story and try to find ourselves in this narrative. Cause everyone can relate to ❤️❤️
I don't think you need to see someone to enjoy a performance or feel the message. I connected with the song strongly and I love the reveal at the very end
Eh, it wasn't my choice to win, but the studio version is still a good song. However... Deban has a point, if the staging is done right then it could be a proper moment - and this was not done right. It's too dark, that fan is irrelevant and distracting, and the mask is also distracting from having any connection with him. Subwoolfer is different, the type of music isn't needing the emotional connection you'd get from seeing someone's face and eyes. I don't get the journey as much, but that's maybe just me. It's also interesting to hear that he refers to it as Asperger's - that's a very divisive term to people who have Autism. It's a pretty polished performance, but in my opinion there's better ways they can stage it. I honestly can't see how it'll do in the final, but I can see it getting there easily.
If Aspergers is how shealdon identifies, then its ok to use that term. there are different ways people of the spectrum identify as so its up to the individual. I can say this as identifying as Aspergers myself.
@@DorothyBanks of course. I didn't say it was bad, just that it's interesting to see it. Attitudes here, particularly in the teens and early 20s is that it's generally not a favoured term. It's absolutely up to anyone themselves how they wish to identify.
@@dave1361 I grew up when pc wasn't a thing although I can understand gen z wanting to be seen as woke to try to fit in. I'm past the age where I care about how people see me. I hope I wasn't too blunt in my 1st reply
He has a good voice, though in my opinion not my favourite song on the night. Too overwrought and there is a lack of connection that comes through to the tv viewer despite the emotion, kind of feels unfinished and manufactured, I can’t put my finger on why, maybe the dark vibe. Voyager where amazing and deserved to win the televote like they did. Great performance and the staging by voyager was amazing. After listening to all the songs voyager stuck with me along with Jude York. Jude had a real sincerity in his delivery, there was emotion but uplifting at the same time
Agreed, I really wanted Voyager to win, but I'm glad they won the televote at least. Sheldon has good vocals though, so I'm not too upset about our choice :')
Its literally just a better wrapped version of Norway and TiX's "Fallen Angel" from last year... Same thematical back story, same reveal of facial feature... Song is better at least though.
Yet another ballad. i.e. Not a comment against the song (which is great) but in general. Personal opinion. Ballads are a cheap way to get an emotional reaction from the people and jury especially.
I was in the arena for the competition and when he came back for the winners encore everyone around me was in tears as we felt the emotion even more
Same! He feels even more powerful live. It's unreal

I was gutted! But they won the televote at least, silver lining ://
@@lostfigure3703 if that results in bigger crowds next time they hit the road, it'll be a net win, for sure. At least people know they exist now.
The jury and the public were both literally on the same page. Sheldon was awarded 50 points each from the jury and the public.
Guys this could win eurovision
AYEEEE PHILIPPINES LETS GOOOO
Oh my... OH MYYYY ... i love it :) What a nice voice... great
This Deban is my favorite Deban. 🙏🏻♥️
i think the mask works better with subwoolfer because they're playing characters, they're "keith" and "jim" from the moon who are billions of years old, but nobody knows who is "really" behind those masks, so you think of them as the characters not as the performers beneath. with this entry, i think the mask needs to come off much sooner or play into a larger stage narrative of hiding himself before the reveal, right now it just feels like a cool fashion mask until the reveal.
Easy Top 5. Absolutely no doubt. The juries will eat this up and people will love it.
0:44 Some website says his Mother is Australian and Father is Filipino
I like your new hair William
Great commentary both of you, pretty much said what I was going to. The flack against Sheldon has been "he was too emotional". You should not be telling someone with Aspergers they are being too emotional. I can see this being ramped up with the staging in Turin, I'm sure it would have happened for Montagne as well had she not been forced to throw a studio entry due to COVID. Stoked with the entry and am 100% sure he will rip it come Turin.
Did I hear William say "Bakla"? Giiiiirl beks!!!
For the finals he wore white. As an AuDHD person, this rang true to me.
Can you do a review of the whole show from Australia decided? I loved Bite me from G-Nation. I wanna know your thoughts on that song and the others.
WHEN is William going to drop the skincare routine?
William, he doesn't need to be seen,he doesn't need to take off the mask. The mask is the one society has forced him to wear to fit in. The symbolism is far more important than "seeing" his emotions through his face. You can "see" his emotions through the lyrics, but the point is not to see anything, but to feel the meaning of every single word amplified by his vocal range. That is why all distractions have been removed. For that to happen. Out of all people, I assumed you would understand, because you have always been able to grasp the meaning and the backstory of songs.
Anyway, alll good🙂
12 points from Cyprus xx
Di namin ramdam na ganun ka passionate yung mga Filipino fans sa ESC.
Sa Miss U tayo mas naka-focus. 😂
Obviously ESC isn't that mainstream here in the PH despite the fact that another Filipino in the name of Vincent Bueno had already participated last year.
So many videos about Australia, Sweden, San Marino.....1 for Poland. 👍😊
My winner for 2022 no matter who get the 🏆
Will you do a video about Russia being banned from Eurovision and how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is affecting Eurovision? I feel it's a major story that would be worth covering by you guys.
Mind you, I don't think Ukraine will participate either. So both Russia and Ukraine will be out I'm afraid,.
@@onewxrldmusic7303 Why not? Bosnia participated in Eurovision during its war in the 1990s.
@@sunoolee9467 Good for Bosnia, but not every war is equal and if Ukraine decides they can't be dealing with it at the same time then thats valid for them to step out.
@@jazzycat8917 but they will be actually!
And now I'm 22 and I'm happier than ever, and done with hiding my true self
And to Alex: I don't think 2022 is a weak year at all
This is great. Honestly I don't think they should change the staging at all. It was excellent.
Filipino represent gurrl. We came in loud and annoy others but we proud. 😂🤟
Add some light to the staging towards the end. He needs to rise from a ring of fire when he takes off the mask to show that even though he is not the same he can rise up above the pain
20 minutes for Sheldon, over 20 minutes for Italy…and 9 minutes for Poland….no comments
Please William&Deban comment Krystian Ochman’s song River🙏🏻 then u will see a powerful voice from Poland!😄
How is it desided which songs are reviewed by William and Deban? As if they want to say something about choosing specific entries as opposed to others.
my favorite this year! better than italy...hope we are in sidney next year with a world songcontest😍
Cause everyone can relate to ❤️❤️
hey william! do u wanna join the philippine eurovision group?
Does he not remind you of Duncan Lawrence?
It is a good song but it doesn’t have that killer edge or killer chorus that a Eurovision winner needs. It’s a bit repetitive.
This was one of my favourites but is no one going to talk about the technical errors with the voting?
What were the technical errors? I haven't heard about this
I don't think you need to see someone to enjoy a performance or feel the message.
@@DorothyBanks no, not at all! I understand :)
He has a good voice, though in my opinion not my favourite song on the night. Too overwrought and there is a lack of connection that comes through to the tv viewer despite the emotion, kind of feels unfinished and manufactured, I can’t put my finger on why, maybe the dark vibe. Voyager where amazing
and deserved to win the televote like they did. Great performance and the staging by voyager was amazing. After listening to all the songs voyager stuck with me along with Jude York. Jude had a real sincerity in his delivery, there was emotion but uplifting at the same time
Agreed. I have trouble remembering his melody. Is it a song contest or singing contest? Hopefully Jude comes back for another Oz Decides.
Agreed, I really wanted Voyager to win, but I'm glad they won the televote at least. Sheldon has good vocals though, so I'm not too upset about our choice :')
i feel it never really reaches a peak or climax but maybe they can tweak some of the high notes to help fix that
Might do well with the juries, but I just don't see it getting any love with the televoters......
My winner so far ! That's all !
Its literally just a better wrapped version of Norway and TiX's "Fallen Angel" from last year... Same thematical back story, same reveal of facial feature... Song is better at least though.
Where’s the video on Russia being kicked out of Eurovision? Pretty big news you’re ignoring on the channel.
Yet another ballad. i.e. Not a comment against the song (which is great) but in general.
Personal opinion. Ballads are a cheap way to get an emotional reaction from the people and jury especially.
Everything is better than the girl from last year
When he was six years old is reference to him being diagnosed with Asberger's Disease by age 6
It’s not a disease, it’s a neurotype. We are not the same but we are not sick.
William must be having a bad hair day. Tempted to do a rewatch and count the amount of times he tried to fix it 😂
Dw it looks great
