so much respect for Ford very plainly and factually stating that the State of the Union wasn't good. One of the presidents with the most integrity. Even Bob Woodward believes Ford when he says that he did not pardon Nixon as part of a deal, or as a political ploy; he genuinely believed that it was important for the country, both domestically as well as its perception abroad to not be caught up in Watergate for any longer. Obviously it would have been nice to see justice done, but at what cost? The career of everyone involved was over anyway.
People 'do worry about individuals not thinking there is any punishment for breaking the law, but as you say, careers were over. I've also read articles that argue the certainty of being caught is a vastly more powerful deterrent than the punishment, Articles on the death penalty I mean, but I imagine the claim would work for a number of other punishments as well. I suppose all that would remain is the value some people place on their 'ideas of justice and law, Some people often have an expectation that people need 'suffer sufficiently, Or some that the law must 'always be. I think there's reasoning and logic in those views, but think I prefer a 'bit more flexible justice system, myself.
