    The r/ultima reddit thread talking about the latest 2 versions I mentioned in the video: / can_anyone_help_me_wit...
    A look at Ultima Underworld in the Unity engine. v1.09. The next and hopefully soon to be ideal way to play the classic dungeon crawling game from Blue Sky Productions/Looking Glass & Origin. The Unity version comes with mouselook, 3 different music settings to configure in the config.ini file (PSX/PS1 Sound Blaster 16, & MIDI), higher resolutions, smoother gameplay, quicker transitioning to your stats/skills page and rune bag, etc. It's currently a work-in-progress (the latest release is v1.10 back in 2021, and the playable one being v1.09, which released in 2018), so keep that in mind if you jump in to this.
    I did a quick installation guide, with steps from the Looking Glassed channel: • Ultima Underworld Unit...

      It'll take a few more years to catch up, but there's some upside to this. UnderworldGodot "reboots the code base to act more like the Underworld games originally worked."
      With all his experience making the "version 1" now he knows how to make a more accurate and better engineered "version 2". This will Ultimately be better long term ;)

    I noticed before you recreated the save games/slots that the path in the error message had a slash (forward slash) near the end, even though it was on Windows. Also the path in the error message may be in the config file it mentioned, which could be edited to remove or correct it. The first UU is one of my favorite Ultimas; so happy to see people still trying to zdoom it. You could move around and fling objects in UU, like in the later Elder Scrolls games, and they'd skirt across floors and bounce off walls. Pretty advanced shit even for today.

    Took me forever to finish it. This was in an era before Gamefaqs. Part of the sticking point was dealing w/level 7 (kiss your mana goodbye until you break the mage's crystal). Another one was figuring out that the incense you light is teaching you a mantra that will help guide you to where you can get one of the Talismans. Finding the three parts of the key to the final area was a thing. Very satisfying once I did complete it.

    In your gaming life there are a few games that stop you in your tracks when you first play them. For me, Ultima Underworld is one of those games, its hard to explain the impact this game had at the time. It was 1 year BD .... (Before Doom 1) but boy did it show what would be around the corner. @@Voidbrand The initial setup of Daggerfall Unity is easier, but going through all the mods, deciding which to try and hoping that they work together can be very time consuming. With Elder Scrolls or Fallout games I often spend several hours on mods before I start the game. The textures look "cleaner" because the Unity version is (probably) using actual perspective texture-mapping. UW uses affine or linear texture-mapping, which causes warping at the seams (EG - in-between triangles on a quad on the wall) & tends to also warp when the textures are close, but one portion is further away (EG - Moving up to a wall & looking up or down).
    Perspective texture-mapping is the gold standard, but it requires dividing each texel by the Z (in camera space) in order to have the perspective work correctly. It was too much for PCs of the early 90s to pull off.
    - Ex game programmer

    • @MichaelPohoreski
      @MichaelPohoreski Год назад +1

      Technically _Quake_ did perspective-correct texture mapping every 16 pixels, but yeah, it was hideously expensive to do in software.

    • @pretzelboi64
      @pretzelboi64 4 месяца назад

      UW isn't even true affine texture mapping. It's some weird hack
      Also, the main thing about this version is the lack of dithering and the fact that it has more than 256 colors on screen at any given time because of the smooth darkness, which wasn't possible in the original

    The project is like 80-90% there for several years, it feels like such a waste 🥲These kind of projects usually skyrocket when more people contribute, if not we can only hope the creator has time and will (similar to the Force Engine source port for Dark Forces, etc.).
    Last year i tried to start a less faithful (no reading the original saves for example) recreation of the second game, using Godot Engine and this and other older incomplete sources are very precious to understanding how the original game tech works. Had a good chunk of reading the levels, textures, items, some UI and moving around then i started a new job and had to pause. Hopefully next month i switch to another job with more free time (and less stress) so i'd like to continue again soon.
    Another crazy project i have is to map the Thunderscape levels in a user friendly way, that game is a looong journey that could be enjoyed better by people with some aid i think. But for later times!
    Another cool thing i discovered is the source port that allows playing Eye of The Beholder with the MegaCD assets on the PC, strange but unique thing.

    This conveys well what I hope more devs would embrace when they do remakes of old IPs. Retain of the original as much as is viable, and only 'upgrade' (modernize) the things that actually need it. Regrettably, they tend to alter too much, f. ex. turn a square-grid system into hexagonal-grid in a strategy game, or sprites into forced 3d - basically visualnoising the graphics with modern special effects that make the remake feel nothing like the original.
    There's a lot of 90s games especially that I wish would be given a high fidelity remake, with basically the only alterations required are the ones that make them run on modern machines, possibly if it is a multiplayer game bring the netcode up to speed, enabling both LAN and online connections and simultaneous turns for a strategy game. Any larger deviations from the original should be behind an on/off toggle, imo. Should be a no-brainer for a remake to just be a remake, not a re-imagining/interpretation, yet re-imagining is what I regrettably see far too often.

    Oh wow, i've always liked the aesthetics of ultima underworld, but after arx fatalis I couldn't really get over the immesly dodgy mouse controls (feels like there's grit in the mouseball... in a laser mouse). SO this could be a great way to finally enjoy a classic.

      I had the same mouse controls with Underworld, but if it's the same then it can be fixed by bumping the mouse sensitivity in GOGs DOSBox config to 200 or so.

    with the Gog version it's the user interface that I dislike. That needs reworking.

    So is this and Ultima Underworld 2 on Unity 100% playable and beatable?

    • @Voidbrand
      @Voidbrand  9 месяцев назад

      Just checked the github page. Just Underworld 1 is beatable. 2 is partially supported.

      @@Voidbrand Anyways I noticed wrong and that's trying to change keybindings.
      Togglemouselook is set to "E"
      I changed it to "Tab" in the config notpad. But for some reason its not working as intended and when I press tab its like its toggling mouse look on and off at the same time.

    • @Voidbrand
      @Voidbrand  Год назад +1

      If there is a way I'm not sure. No in-game options and nothing in the config ini file for 60fps+.

      @@Voidbrand I reckon that won't stop me from playing them. Just bought both 1&2 off GOG. Childhood here I come.

    I don't have to go through this palaver, playing the original is fine by me! Although one way there will be an installer that will automate everything.

    It's just not the same without the 256 18-bit colors VGA aesthetic of the original

    What is the status of UU Unity, considering the incredibly hostile terms of service Unity has displayed towards developers?

      Last update was in July. I imagine he's still working on it despite that recent kerfuffle.
      "Current project focus has been on reverse engineering and additions to the editor . I'm hoping to swtich to feature implementation soon but time is limited. Bug fixes may be infrequent as I just want to get features added to UW2 before focusing on polish."

    I tried using this but could not for the life of me figure out how to install it, and believe me I spent hours but I coudnt not figure it out using the mod authors instructions, its like they assumed youd know how to advanced computer stuff.

      That's what I heard, had to check YT to get the steps right. A few people commented on a guide for installing Underworld Exporter before this video was made, so I hope it's working all right.
