- Kelly Galloup needs no introduction, but he'll get one anyway. Kelly started his professional fly fishing adventure at age 13, tying flies for a local shop. By age 16 Kelly was guiding and many years later, he hasn't stopped.
Along the way he has owned fly shops, written books, hosted fly fishing TV shows and written articles for most of the fly fishing magazines. Today he's the owner of The Slide Inn Lodge on the banks of the Madison River.
Tonight Kelly will be talking about targeting predatory trout with streamers. He will cover how to, where to, and what to use, to give us the best chance to get that really big trout.

Kelly looks, speaks, and acts like he is a normal human being. Make no mistake about it, Galloup is a visitor from a higher dimension. Cherish every word and burn his wisdom into the fishy part of your brain.

Talk all you want!! Most people are suffering from diminished attention spans and a over confidence in their expertise. Listening to a real expert talk about the details of your trade makes them realize just how little they actually know...its good for them.
As a rapala man. This seems to be the fly technique most suitable for my learning curve to fly fishing. I'm stoked.
Always set aside an hour of my Montana annual trip inthe middle of the day to swap stores with Kelly. He doesn't just talk fishin and is always as genuine of a guy as u will ever meet.
Most amazing most amazing videos I've seen on fly fishing I'm just getting started (learning to fly fish) I just listening to your knowledge and wisdom I can't wait to give it a shot there's a lot more to it than I thought lot more specially learning how to read the water I believe like you said that's a big factor in catching the big ones
The important thing about fishing a jerkbait is to snap the lure drag free,dont pull the lure snap it.I am 60 and am going to start fishing these big streamers this year,trying to learn and try it.I have fished spinners,jigs,dryflys,bass,ice,everything my whole life,i have never really fished streamers.I am retired in wyoming abd

52:40 - I learned this because I kept catching fish whenever I was screwing around getting something out of my vest. I finally realized it's because I was moving my fly around more. For the longest time I was thinking I shouldn't move my nymphs with the rod. Once I started bouncing them around more... I doubled the number of fish I catch. I'm in Colorado. Mostly fish the Animas, San Juan in Pagosa Springs, Rio Grande.

And how do we "move that fly" (streamer) with our rod tip? What's the technique to practice? The how-to?
I usually twitch my rod tip at end of my retrieve as well as jerk the rod towards me nit to my side. Pull the butt end toward your arm pit. Hard to explain. Try it out on th water to see what moves you fly the most. Also try different leader lengths to get more movement out of the big flies. Some like lap dancer need slightly longer leader same with zoo cougar. But the deceiver and danger and boogeyman man don't need as long. 3 ft to 4ft on sinknline. Floater on small creek use dungeons on nine foot leader also peanut on 9 ft
Great stuff and a wealth of knowledge. However, his lion analogy maybe goes too far. Sure lions will often feed at night but they like most predators are absolute opportunists. They will eat anytime prey possibly comes by, day or night.

One thing he failed to mention (unless I missed it) was that a fish will almost never chase a fly into the sun
Can you explain a little more what you mean by this? I have a feeling I do this all the time 😂
@@bs5am fish are just like people they don't want to be vulnerable. Any steelhead guide will tell you to pick the side of the river that would have you swing the fly away from the sun. It's like driving with the sun in your eyes it gives you that unsettled feeling and impaired vision. Hence why steamer fishing is always better on cloudy days. This mostly is for swinging steelhead flys but you will see more success following this general rule
I guess you missed the part about him preferring to fish at night for the big, decent and clever Trout.
Im also guess at night it doesn't matter which side you fish from as the sun just isn't out.
