Damn. Still love this game and play it once in a while! Remember my 486 was too slow so that the mushroom had almost no affect to the eyes... And now I see this :D
My guess would be Duke Nukem is the Opponent with the most HP (Could take the most beating) in choosing him you erase this factor from the game. Could be a make or break factor for the time, especially if you want to kill everyone to get the cashprize.
@@ottomann4846 Each AI has their own personality, yes. Most differences are minor, such as slightly different likelihoods to have different upgrades and different driving styles. Liz Arden will always be more aggressive than Suzy Stock, for example. These differences are most pronounced when playing on hard difficulty. Duke Nukem is the most notable one with far more health, easily twice of everyone else. He also gets a unique voice line when he wins a race. Picking different avatars as the player doesn't make a difference, with one exception. Picking Duke's avatar with the name "Duke Nukem" will let you race with the same health bonus. It's considered a cheat code, so likely why this run avoids doing that, just taking the profile picture so you don't have to race against him.
The AI's have their own stats, too. Sam Speed is, I believe, simply faster than other racers. You'll notice that certain AI's always outperform others this way. They also have different proclivities to buy items e.g. Liz Arden will get mines more often than Diesel Joe.
Damn this is amazing, first Death Rally speedrun I have ever seen, love this game since childhood, well done!!!!

That first race, though... Holy shit!
The Windows version wouldn't let you join a hard race until you had at least a Shrieker.
Pretty sure it just gave you a warning. You could still sign up.
It'll tell you no, but if you try to join it again it'll let you in.

Is there a reason to choose the Duke Nukem avatar or does that not matter?

@@H0RN3DRPR wait, different avatars actually have different properties?

@@Nemi246 so Sam speed isn't actually faster than the others?
