Double Dribble was amazing to 4yo me. Those dunk animations are burned into my brain. Takes me back to good times watching my brother and mom play each other. My bros favorite play was the top corner 3 pointer lol.
I loved Hoops! After seeing it in a magazine, I wanted it so bad. Mr. Doc and Bomber are a solid pair. The downside is there's not much else to the game.
My brother and I are huge Lakers fans and revere Magic. We rented Magic Johnson's Fast Break, figured out that whoever was player two was always going to lose, and exchanged the game for Arch Rivals.
I remember back when Magic Johnson’s Fast Break came out, I thought it was fun. I revisited it again in modern day and realized it should’ve been called ‘Kurt Rambis’ Pud Pounder’
This is quite the trip down memory lane. Thank you! I was waiting for Magic Johnson’s Fast Break, because I remember that game was SO broken. If you just stood in front of the guy trying to inbound, he couldn’t get the ball past you, so he’d just keep handing it to you so you could get an easy shot over and over. My brothers and I used to try to run the score up as high as we could, usually getting close to 300-0. 😂 Fun video!
@ProphetofZod Thank you. I enjoyed making it. 300 points !?? Holy Smokes..lol man you guys were killing it. Yeah you can abuse the CPU like that. Good job that cool. You guys should have mailed that score to Nintendo Power Magazine back in the day. They might have highlighted you guys score.
Couldn't wear British Knights at my school. BK... Tecmo Basket ball was elite at the time. I ran with my Blazer squad, Drexler was crazy with Ainge coming off the bench. Ultimate Basketball and Hoops were fun too.
How many coming here remember BK shoes?! Admittedly, I had forgotten until I saw this video... But, the NES was when graphics took a major leap forward. You didn't have to imagine nearly as much as you did before...
@ddeleckijr I appreciated the endings and as a kid I thought far fetched but as an adult they truly make sense..lol with the exception of Wiz making the formula for gold..😂😂😂
I got Double Dribble for my 9th birthday I believe or maybe 10th . One of two I still have form my original collection as a kid . I remember bombing 3’s and my neighbor getting so mad at me 😂 or when you kept stealing it from one another how mad we’d get. I kept Double Dribble and Mike Tyson’s punch out . I’m 45 and still have both .
A really accurate list order imo. Me and my neighbor had rented all those except All Pro Basketball. It looks interesting though. Arch Rivals was a quite fun 2 player rental. Never taken too seriously, but a nice time killer for a couple hours. Hoops was really fun in 2 player with myself playing Bomber and my neighbor playing Face. I'd stay in the back trying to blast 3s and my neighbor would block anything the computer tried to pull. Ultimate Basketball was a really under the radar game for the NES. I was graphically wowed when I had rented Pat Riley Basketball on my Genesis, then the NES went 'hold my beer'... lol As for Tecmo, they really were on another level with their NES sports games for football, basketball, and wrestling.
@chriswheatley3146 I remember playing Pat Riley Basketball, but Ultimate Basketball was a first for me for this video. I feel like it had potential but the mechanics were rough. Pat Riley got it right tho.
@@RudetunasArcade Pat Riley was definitely the better of the two games, but I was really impressed that the NES even got close with its graphics. It's a shame the closest the Master System ever got was Basketball Nightmare; which was quite dissapointing.
My two absolute favorite NES B-ball games are Double Dribble and Hoops. My best friends and I played both of those games for countless hours. I remember getting hyped hearing the national anthem and watching the crowd entering the arena at the beginning of Double Dribble. Also, I still love Hoops for the unique playground setting. It made the game stand out from all of the other B-ball titles. I still play both games fairly often.
I remember a buddy and I renting the Magic Johnson game from the video store. It was a terrible BB game. Double Dribble was the one that I have the fondest memories playing. The Bird vs Jordan game has a long history going back to the Atari and Apple computer days before the NES era. I think it Dr J vs Bird when it first came out. Cool video;)
I've done ROM updates to two of these games (and almost a 3rd). I've put out a few updates to Tecmo NBA Basketball in the form of annual updates and a Tecmo NCAA Basketball game. Also, one of my ealiest updates was to Jordan vs. Bird in the form of Melo vs. Lebron - One on One.
Acclaim has been defunct since 2004. Which probably isn't too surprising lol. Anyway I had a friend that had Jordan vs Bird, so I played some of that. But Double Dribble is what stuck with me even though we only rented it a couple of times.
Thank you. Hoops was a great game. I enjoyed it and loved that it checked all the boxes with dunk animations, half court rules, character variety, and even endings for the characters.
I liked Dr. J/Bird more than the Jordan game. Might be because it was the 1st basketball i played but remember playing it nonstop in the school computer lab The sound effects for the double dribble 3 pt shot and dunks will be burned into my memory until the day I die
Tube socks were not a thing in the 90s, either were short shorts, except maybe stockton lol. The long shorts, even stupidly long shorts, became a thing in the 90s.
I saw it but I didn't have the means to play it. But you are right. That game is awesome. Do they have an English translation on the switch? I thought it was included in that Kunio Collection they released a couple of years back.
@@RudetunasArcade No idea if there is an official translated release of the game, but I enjoy playing the fan translation on my flashcart when I'm in a sporty mood!
@@RudetunasArcade i was also wondering why Roundball was not included, thought maybe because Roundball is only 2 on 2 and not the classic 5 on 5 basketball.
wow thrat tracy charater in All pro basketball looks like she just woke up from bed or doing the yaoh something else to someone or possibly all three or maybe the player or coach told her to scream and got into an altercation etc.
Tecmo NBA Basketball was always my favorite. The music was solid and the Hornets were practically brand new then.
Did that with Utah
Double Dribble was amazing to 4yo me. Those dunk animations are burned into my brain. Takes me back to good times watching my brother and mom play each other. My bros favorite play was the top corner 3 pointer lol.
@lftdblazer wow..that's so cool that your mom played double dribble. That's freaking awesome 😁. Yeah the 3 point spot was a killer.
I was never into sports but I absolutely loved double dribble, 10 yard fight and tecmo bowl.
Still play it💯
Your bro had probably figured out the "sweet spot" where you tend to make all your shots.
Double Dribble has HOURS/DAYS/WEEKS of my life on it!
I loved Hoops! After seeing it in a magazine, I wanted it so bad. Mr. Doc and Bomber are a solid pair. The downside is there's not much else to the game.
Yeah, it is a pretty simple game but it was cool that each player had their own personal ending.
Man HOOPS was underrated!!! My brother and I played the heck out that game. Great video!
Thank you, and yeah Hoops rocked. I enjoyed the endings for the characters.
Tecmo NBA was the best. Tecmo Superbowl of Basketball.
Tecmo was awesome with sports title during the NES and SNES era.
When you had the 3 pointer figured out on Double Dribble, it essentially became a kid fight hidden inside an NES cart 😂
I played so much double dribble back in the day. Me and my brothers got into physical fights over it haha.
I whooped my cousins ass over that damn game.
My brother and I are huge Lakers fans and revere Magic. We rented Magic Johnson's Fast Break, figured out that whoever was player two was always going to lose, and exchanged the game for Arch Rivals.
Glad you upgraded your game. Yeah I think they just slapped Magics name on that game just to sell it.
I remember back when Magic Johnson’s Fast Break came out, I thought it was fun. I revisited it again in modern day and realized it should’ve been called ‘Kurt Rambis’ Pud Pounder’
@@shaneobryan6114 Hahaha
Tecmo NBA Basketball is the goat
No way double dribble is pre NBA jam
The dunk contest in Jordan vs Bird sucked! The computer always got great scores, but you could do a perfect dunk, and you’d only get a 25.
Lol I actually liked the dunk contest. It was all about timing(well, the whole game)...releasing the button on time...nice dunk options too!!
I loved Ultimate Basketball for some reason as a kid. I loved the dunk animation lol.
Graphically it was one of the better looking games.
This is quite the trip down memory lane. Thank you! I was waiting for Magic Johnson’s Fast Break, because I remember that game was SO broken. Great video my friend, i still play Tecmo Basketball on my NES to this day...agreed best basketball game on NES.
The music that is considered repetitive and annoying today were considered earworms and stuck with you for days back in the day.
If you dunk far away enough in Arch Rivals, you can break the glass of the backboard.
The computer broke the back board on me but I didn't know how to do it. Thanks for explaining.
@ No prob! From what I remember, you have to start your dunk at the furthest point possible in order to break the glass
I still get the DD team/option select menu screen music stuck in my head from time to time randomly. Just glorious.

British Knights. Style over substance.
Corner Three!
Those were the days..lol
5:17 I remember the Magic Johnson video game from my childhood, but never played it. The on-court players remind me of gingerbread men.
I played hoops so much as a kid i beat it with every possible combination of players in 2 on 2... loved it
