One of my favourites so far. Bute is a special place, and I have many happy memories of visiting here with my family and also as a lone soul over the years. Thanks for saluting the 600 men of Bute who came to the aid of William Wallace at Falkirk. The gravity of your words and demeanor convey the enormity of their sacrifice, but then as you walk toward St. Blane's Church, the poignant, cinematic music evoked tears, as I thought of their hopes to find victory, their anger toward Edward Longshanks, whilst their families were left on the island, hoping to see their sons and husbands again, but also knowing they might not. St.Blane's looks like a peaceful place to stop. There must be a lot that happened there over the centuries, some of which we cannot know. I now feel inspired to do a little research on it. Then, at the end, your music came in only to stir up powerful emotion yet again. I got chills imagining the spirits of the ancestors, the men of Bute, pouring through you as you sang and played We Are Strong! Perhaps you aren't aware of it, but I feel that you often 'channel' the spirit of Scotland in your music, which I find very emotional and meaningful, especially when paired with these lovely visual episodes. Aye, the heart makes promises that the body can't always keep.....
Hi Eddy, you are certainly exploring some historical and interesting places at present. I can’t think of a better way to spend a day of retirement, walking around and having the beautiful countryside to yourself, and at the same time, getting some real exercise. Thanks for all the great videos, take care and best regards, Rob.
Great video, very good quality and chat 👍. I walked that section in the opposite direction 7/8 Sept 21. Wild camped overnight. Just walked the next section from Rothesay to Kilchattan Bay last week.( In reverse to the way the walk is advertised!). Much better I thought to be walking towards Arran. Still to do the North loop another time. It's a lovely island to walk.
If it's any consolation, we did that loop yesterday, and it took us a lot longer than I anticipated. We started at St Blane's, climbed to the summit of Suidhe Chatain before dropping down to Kilchattan Bay and looping round the south of the island by the lighthouse. Pretty heavy going down the east coast.
Great video wish id watched it before my journey i jumped on my bike from rothesay and cycled to killchattan bay had the mad idea to go see the lighthouse bad decision total exhausted trying to get along the narrow path and the livestock gates with my bike made it to the lighthouse and glencallum bay took a 20 min rest before climbing up the hill up to the top past loch na leighe and down to st blaines and the stone circle then back to town . Think ill jump on the bus to killchatten next time and do it on foot take more time to enjoy it more as there are some great sights up there .Thanks for your interesting videos
Mate, I really liked the pace of this video. The long, ponderous pauses in your narration, really made the piece feel natural and unhurried. The idea of having the stationery camera pointing somewhere pretty (a glade, or clearing, for example) and you walking into shot; that really worked well. The start of the video really got my attention, with the perfectly pitched sound muffling and the quality of shooting with the mostly stationery camera. You've really got an eye for passage too. Great work. By the way, we're staying in St. Ninian's Bay in three weeks.
I'm sure the Viking's had something to do with it. St Blane's Church surprised the heck out of me. I was expecting a small rectangular ruin. What you have is a Dark Age Monastery that, for an archaeologist, is out of this world. I'm sure many of the folk who visit it don't quite appreciate what exactly they are looking at. The extent of the surrounding walls almost makes it look like a defended site.
Hi ed. Agree with your sentiment about the archers. Duped into a norman battle to give their ultimate sacrifice . Just read Simon webbs account of nevilles cross. The Bruce's son king David's invasion of england. Futile and costly to the ordinary man .. no war pensions either back then.
you should do one of them 'gear list' videos Ed - 'what I carry when I'm far from a loo when I need a poo' ... that kind of thing ... or my favourite Aldi walking boots, or my Lidl rucksack!

Thanks Derek. The island certainly has a magical quality about it.

It's a lovely area, but even small walks can be a tad taxing.
Scotland is one of the most beautiful places in the world
Absolutely. The Island of Bute has a definite magical quality about it.

Thanks Gary. Yeh, it is a narrow path at that point. Never mind, it's all good experience for the next time.

Many thanks. Enjoy St Ninian's Bay.
The circular walls reminds me of Bowmore Round Church on Islay - no corners for the devil to hide in!

Great Eddy put your feet up until the next time

I see you made it to Wemyss Bay , did you get a pie on the way home?
I'm not sure that I remember. Probably disgraced myself yet again with way too many beers.

I mentioned that Ann has friends that bring her back pies from McCaskies whenever they go that way. It's across from the ferry dock.
Butchers do the best pies.

I liked the tour, but you showed very little scenery, it was mostly you! Don’t take it personally!
