Strandberg Boden Original 6 Guitar Review: "It's Not What It Looks Like!"

  • Taking a look at the .strandberg* Boden Original 6 2018 model today. Can a four and a half pound, oddly shaped, twisted-neck space guitar really deliver an authentic guitar experience? Or did I just buy some kind of conceptual Ikea guitar as a joke? Let's find out.
    Some notes I forgot to mention:
    -20" radius seems fine, maybe due to the smooth rolled neck?
    -It doesn't work on wall hangers and most stands. Strandberg sells a stand for $60.
    -It's very loud but a little tin-y when played unplugged, similar to a travel guitar.
    -Easy to forget its in your hand and wack the headstock nub against stuff :P

    I started suffering with a numb right arm and hand due trapped nerves resulting from damage to neck vertebrae. I have a lot of lovely guitars, but I found myself unable to play them for any length of time without the weight on the strap over my shoulder causing problems. Even sitting was a problem because I would hunch without something to lift the guitar a couple of inches off my leg. I ended up buying a Strandberg Classic (cheapest) and found that the very light weight and ergonomics solved all my problems. The single coils filled the Strat gap pretty well, but I have since bought a Strandberg Original for the humbucker option - doesn't quite have the depth and resonance of my Les Paul, but a good acceptable humbucker sound. Like Chris, I had no problems adapting to the fanned frets and strange neck shape. They are expensive, but they have allowed me to continue playing guitar, which would not have been possible with any other guitar, and there is really nothing else as light weight and comfortable.

      Nigel, I'm so glad you found something that allowed you to keep playing. The really strange thing about these guitars is there aren't any compromises..other than the price. They sound and feel great. I expected them to feel cheap and sound thin. Not the case at all. I haven't tried the single coil version, but I recently saw one on Reverb for $1000. That seems very reasonable for what you're getting, but someone bought it pretty quickly. Maybe next time! I'm also interested in trying the tele-style Salen model.

    • @nigelwilliams3311
      @nigelwilliams3311 5 лет назад +4

      @@TheGuitarPit I bought mine new - there is a stockist in the UK, but they are few and far between. The Classic is the cheapest Boden in the range (£1270 compared to £2020 for the Original), and with HSS pickups it does a quite good SuperStrat. I did miss a neck humbucker, and particularly my Les Paul - always my favourite guitar, but unfortunately the heaviest. The Strandberg Original at least gives me that option. It doesn't quite match the sound, but neither does my PRS P245 which cost a lot more than the Strandberg! The Original does have coil taps, but it can't compete with the cheaper Classic for a Strat sound. I was also interested in the (Tele style) Salen, but I already have a lot of guitars, most of which I now can't play very often. I searched desperately for something that would allow me to keep playing, and the Strandbergs are the only ones I could find. They are definitely worth consideration for any guitarist with back or shoulder problems.

      I too am suffering off serious back pain and started to not being able to play any "standard" guitar for a longer time. It seems like the Strandberg Classic 6 Trem is solving that problem. Although it has kind of a different frequeny response than any "normal" guitar it does not sound thin or like a toy. The unique neck shape is very comfortable. The Fanfrets i still need to adopt a little to.

    I love the attention to detail in your review. Most reviewers play a few soundbytes and state the obvious. Catching the glue on the fret board, noticing the fanned fret profile, calling out the ho-hum top, stating the neck isn't (to you personally) life changing, bridge parts, and the value comparison to Kiesel is appreciated. I've wanted one of these for a while yet remained skeptical if what they are charging for it is warranted.

      Thanks James, I appreciate that. Really enjoyed reviewing this guitar. It seems hard to recommend at $2200, but I basically have to. It's so unique that there is simply nothing else like it. It's an awesome guitar, and I plan on getting a new one soon. Not sure which model yet but I really liked the ultra light weight chambering on this so it'll probably be one of the higher end ones. The new "budget-friendly" ones are solid body.

    I’ve been wanting to try one of these for a while now. I’ve heard that Ola Strandburg designed it with ergonomics in mind and from your testimony and everyone else’s, he seems to have succeeded. The fans of these guitars swear by them, but some people can’t get over the aesthetics to give them a try. It took me a little while to warm up to the headless thing, but now I kinda want one. Great content as always Chris, keep up the good work my man!

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, it's not just hype. It's a unique, interesting instrument. I'm not sure it's worth $2200, because I'd pick my Suhr any day of the week and it was only $200 more. Not exactly fair because we're talkin new vs. used, but it's worth mentioning. But it's certainly not some throw-away import guitar without a soul. It's well worth tracking one down to try, and if you find a good deal on it, snag it. It's not like anything else. Also, if you're a lazy chair player like me, it's probably the best possible ergonomic choice for that sort of thing.

    I received my .strandberg* Standard 6 about 10 days ago. I wanted a travel guitar. I considered the Steinberger Spirit but dropped consideration after I saw a YT demo where the reviewer took out the pickups and showed that the guitar is several blocks of wood glued together. I also considered the ALP(?) aluminum guitar. I then looked at Keisel's headless guitars and, yes, its base price is lower than a .strandberg* but once you start adding the most basic options the price goes up steeply. Also, Keisel's web site is still in the 1990s from a design/usability standpoint. My only complaints so far about the .strandberg* is the knobs and I find the pickups to be borderline shrill and "metallic" for the blues/jam band music I want to play. I will be replacing the knobs with burled knobs and the pickups with Tom Anderson HF1 and HF2 pickups. Ergonomically, the guitar is the best guitar I've ever played. The neck and the slightly fanned frets took minutes to get comfortable with.

    The Carbon Fibre is two sets of aligned carbon fibre sheaths sandwiched between the wood as deep as the fretboard. If it was like Vigier the guitar would never need a neck adjustment. Strandberg necks do move with weather etc just a lot less than other guitars and I imagine as the instrument ages and the wood continues to cure that it should get better and better. It's not even autumn yet so we shall see what winter does the to guitar neck.

As an owner of two Boden Original guitars I can say that quality control of Indonesian ones are not that good, or at least it can be better, especially thinking of 2200+ USD price. But man, these guitars are such a joy to play and just to have it yours. In past I have had maybe a dozen/another of "regular" guitars, some of them were cheap, some not, beautiful, and "metal af", but I can't say that I had such satisfaction of having a guitar until I got first strandberg. If shape of sb guitar are ok to you, if there is nothing wrong being headless, multiscale, lightweight, having weird neck shape - give it a try. Yes the Original models are expensive, they are kinda top-notch of a non-custom/serial strandberg guitars, but you can always try the Classic models, they cost like 600 bucks less, but still strandbergs, with most of the stranderg features. So I think the best way to deal with sb guitars just to have it in your hands and decide to yourself if it's worth it.

      Thanks! I think you're spot on...it's a unique and awesome guitar, but $2200 is no joke. Hard to make a blanket recommendation to everyone, but I'm certain there are people out there where this would be their #1 pick, at any price...it has no competition, if you like what it offers. I'd just like to see a couple things improved at that price point.

      @@TheGuitarPit exactly. In my opinion there is only one reason why you should buy a sb guitar - if you really know that you WANT IT no matter what and how and why. If you just curious - go to the any local store that have one, and check it out. These instruments are different. Almost all the ergonomic features presented in sb guitars is matter of a personal taste (except weight). I've found Original 8 neck waaaay less painful to my left hand wrist, this is the reason why I've chosen it over the amazing Carvin DC800 I had. I'm not a big fan of sb neck joint point, for my small hands it's just too thick, I would like to have a neck-through construction, but right now it's only an option for Sweden made strandbergs. @@TheGuitarPit I agree. But I'm really happy with the Suhr ones, they're just 'Great' and work very well with this chambered guitar, specially the neck p.u. for 'jazzy' sounds. Love the other positions too (HSH). I have several guitars with double-coil p.u.'s (Gretsch, a Squire I moded, an Epiphone (Nighthawk re-edition, Ibanez 7 strings, etc), but none works so well or is as versatile. I always tended towards pu's with mostly a flat response. Usually, they are the most versatile. I had a Luthier's guitar with a George Lynch 'Screemin' Demon', which had this qualities: flat response (no bumps), somewhere between a 'double' and a 'single' response. The thing i like about the .strandberg* is how they managed to make a very versatile guitar with passive electronics. I've been a fan of active guitars since they appeared, and have been on the quest for the one guitar that does it all (lol). The luthier's one was the closest, except the guy didn't did it according to my specifications, dimensions wise.

    I'm sold on the ergonomics alone, as I simply can't find a comfort level with a Tele or other model. Looks like lower prices now, but I'd still pay the price for the ability to play longer with less stress. I hardly ever stand with my Tele, and that is not good because you have to practice the way you are going to play or record, right? Hoping a Strandberg solves that. Saw a woman playing one and thought it was a girl's guitar. Haha, not.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 года назад +1

      They've added a solid body at a better price, but it's heavier. When I shot this video, $2199 was the "cheapest" model, which is a lot. That said, there still isn't much competition in this market. For this sort of thing, you can consider a strandberg, a Kiesel headless, and uhhh....I guess that's it. If you want 4.5lbs, there is zero competition. Even Kiesels come in heavier than that.

      This particular one has Suhr pickups, so it's extremely versatile. There are other models with fishmans, seymour duncans, etc. I'd guess the Suhr pickup models will have the widest range of tones, where as the other models will be more specialized.

      @@TheGuitarPit I am happy to hear that :D. I have a fender strat and a prs custom 24 floyd. I am thinking to change the prs with a strandberg that have these specs. Prs soundwise it's a more gipsonish orientated guitar and when I play it I miss the attack and the tone it's a bit muffled for my taste. The strandberg seems a more well-rounded guitar. • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  5 лет назад +1

      There is a trem model on Reverb right now for $1500. I'd recommend it since that's about as cheap as they get. Restrings aren't awful, but they're a little more fiddly than a regular guitar. I'd still rather restring this than a Floyd rose, any day.

    Quality have nothing to do of the country of origin. It has to do with the company selling it. So it coming from Indonesia has nothing to do with it in my opinion. They build more guitars there and in Korea,china etc than we do over here. I'm sure they know what they are doing. Its up to strandberg, they need to control that better, I do agree its unacceptable with the glue. I have a $350 Indonesian made Ibanez, that have 1 of those glue spots. 1, that strandberg had at least 10

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  5 лет назад +1

      It doesn't, and I'm sure there are god-tier guitars coming out of custom shops in China, but I think it's fair to use price/country as an indicator of what to expect. Rule of thumb, but not the law.

    Those seduced by shiny, new, 'revolutionary' new guitars should remember one fact: a competent guitar player will always play better on a well made £100 guitar, than a less competent player on a £2000 guitar. Which is unlikely to improve your technique. Mike Rutherford plays a £120 guitar.
    I have a number of guitars of all types, all of which play differently, and I enjoy playing all of them. For example, one cost £80 used, as new, and I am confident that it plays at least as well as the jigsaw piece above, with a saving of £1500.
    The only 'revolutionary' feature of this guitar, apart perhaps from the shaped neck (adapted from a design by Jerome Little) is the 'ergonomic' body, something that Leo Fender worked out when this guitar was a mere twinkle in Ola Strandberg's ancestor's eye.
    The review is good and accurate, though for me blemishes on a guitar of that price are completely unacceptable. Why it costs so much is beyond me.
