When India became independent, they should've become alert and bring in resources, naval ships, planes, soldiers etc but they didn't. It was too late when they tried to cross the suez canal. Moreover, their president was very cruel to demand their soldiers to fight till the end knowing they do not have any chance of winning or assuring their soldiers of reinforcement.
As the figures show, India took all the firepower she had to face a couple thousand Portuguese ( most Mozambican) a few Goans and badly equiped. Portugal never armed Goa because it never belived that a so called pacifist nation like India would ever invade its territories ( in Portuguese hands for over 400 years). They were wrong. India showed the world that it only attacks if victory is asured. One reminder. Goa was the capital of many Portuguese territories in the Indian Ocean, namely Macao, Timor, Daman and Diu and Mozambique in east Africa. Most public servants in those territories were Goans. Doctors, lawyers, administrators, etc., came mainly from Goa. Even British possessions had a preference for Goan workers because they were well prepared ( Kenya is an example). Finally, if India was the jewell of the Crown, Goa is the jewell of India.
