Primitive Technology: Chimney and pots
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 окт 2015
- I installed a fireplace and chimney in the tiled roof hut. This is for for lighting and cooking. Heating is already taken care of by the underfloor heating system. I knocked a hole in the back wall and made it from the same mud used to build the hut. Some left over roof tiles were used as a chimney cap.
I made same pottery too. Clay was dug from the creek bank, mixed with broken crushed tiles as grog and formed into a cooking pot and 4 large water pots. I burnished them (rubbed till smooth) with a snail shell and a seed pod making them stronger and more water proof. Then I fired them in the tile kiln. The kiln fired pottery was larger and stronger than my previous pit fired pots and also had a lower breakage rate with only one of the five pots breaking.
I used the water pots to carry water from the creek to irrigate a sweet potato patch behind the wattle and daub hut (over the creek from the tile hut). The cooking pot was used to boil creek water. I used two different methods to show how to boil water: 1) in the kiln using it like a stove and 2) using pot boiling stones from the fire place. Boiling the water with rocks was faster than boiling a pot over a fire. Wooden tongs were made and rocks were put in the fireplace till they glowed red hot. The rocks were then put in the cold water in the pot. It only took 4 rocks to boil the water violently. This is probably the best method for sterilizing suspect water for drinking and could be done even without a pot (even a puddle next to a creek could be boiled this way).

6:06 Ah yes, rock stew. My favorite.
madcat789 no that's just to boil the water to be drinkable
but why not just boil it over the fire and not get soot in it
Dennis Calhoun it is quicker
It's still safe to drink with soot. Obviously it might not taste the best but if you're alone in the forest trying to survive you probably don't mind. Also, it beats drinking the water straight from the river and literally shitting yourself to death because of parasites.
madcat789 he's just boiling it
This guy is a badass. Boiling water is spraying all over him at one point and he doesn't even say a word.

As for the "not-so-peaceful wildlife" fire and noise is a much better protection against that than most people realise. The smell of smoke alone means most animals are giving that area a wide berth. Mostly you just need to pay attention that you don't step on or grab a snake or stinging/biting bug when walking around or picking stuff up.

I wonder if the first person to ever make a chimney got made fun of. Like:
"Hey Bill. Look at Ted over there, idiot's knocking a hole in his house."
"Why?"
"So he can pile mud up around the hole."
"Ha! What an idiot!"
2 weeks later:
"Hey Ted, if I give you 25 berries and a snail shell will you build me one of those mud tower thingys?"
He has a heating system under it. Also, doubt it, i mean, heat in house. Warding off cold, is a priority over jokes in a society with half a language.

Really interesting that if everyone lost our technology, we still could have a semblance of living. its also pretty cool that he built this all from scratch out of dirt, water, wood and stone.
Clay from the river, but yeah its pretty cool.
Well it's how we started. To be honest, unless we completely forgot all the technology we have currently, we could probably get back to this point pretty easily. We have the benefit of thousands upon thousands of years of knowledge of how our ancestors lived all the way up to now.
Too think that if he were in the USA the government would tax him right out of his hard work.....
Learn from him. You never know what can happen tomorrow.
None of this is old. My grandparents built their house like this. Yes they imported glass and had more precise woodworking tools to make windows and doors, but everything else is the same. Later on they added electric wires to the mud hut. Looks fucking surreal.
What I'm saying is, most of what we think of as "technology" is barely a century old, and almost everything else can be done with your bare hands.
My grandparents live in a remote village located in the mountain area in west China, there is a bunch of pine trees behind our house. The old house they used to live looks so similar to this one.Although they abandoned it after building a new house,I still have been there several times. This house is made of abode, soil, stones, wood, even less than one hundred years ago, most of people living in rural area still have this kind houses.
I only ever end up on these videos in situations like this: 12:30am on a Sunday, with a drink in hand.
For real, these videos are quite meditative and relaxing.
your videos are a lot better than most of discovery channel series with the same theme especially that "nudist" BS show. keep up the good work!

No one watches that show because of the survival aspect. People only watch that because all the people do on that show is bitch about stupid shit
+Croz Raven Reality shows are more interested in creating drama, they're shot so that they can get more audience attention. Blame television analysts who instruct shows on the best way to get view numbers rather than a committed audience
+batt3ryac1d To be fair, a lot of those TV shows involve surviving in vastly different environments. They also run on a narrow time frame. This guy can spend months on one video.
I'm definitely gonna try to make those tongs next time I go camping. An ingeniously simple design.

On other news: Half California has burned down....again!
Just moved down to Florida from Ohio and I tried digging in the dirt. Saddly, there is only sand.
You could use the wood which is infinitely abundant down there and try to make a glass house, there's also the mud
I don't like it, it's course and rough and irritating; and it gets everywhere.

simple but ingenious
Because wood is our favorite material. Clay and stone is just not.
Simple but ingenious, but also it's something you can identify with. It's the sort of thing that given those material, a need, and enough time most people would get there eventually, and that kind of useful simplicity is a defining thing for us humans on a primal level.
Something extremely necessary but hard to think of makimg

+Micheal Drake yea he seems like that kind of guy.. but I would do it for charity
+Brian Sanchez no never go to tv, the always fuck good shows up and the producers keep on changing shit, like that one fairly odd parents episode!
+Brian Sanchez Only people who are interested in this watch it. This is more educational than entertaining. Unless this intrigues you, it's quite boring. That's the problem with most 'survival' shows. The network says, "This is too boring, do something exciting.' When in reality, surviving alone in the woods IS boring, unless someone enjoys watching it.
I enjoy this, because it's interesting to learn about new stuff. But in shows like dual survival, it's generally all the same. First day, look for shelter, look for food, make fire, sleep. Second day make better shelter, kill some animal, travel a bit, sleep. Third day, travel more, get 'rescued'
In reality, they don't even have to eat. It's always 3 days. They don't have to kill anything, but the show makes it seem like it's the most important part.
+Brian Sanchez oh you would do it for charity? Yeah right dude
