Really enjoyed your reaction! 🥰 Thanks for checking out SEVENTEEN!!! You were great with picking up some of the names! Yes, SVT has 2 main vocals, DK (the one you really liked who was "sanging" his heart out 🤗), and Seungkwan, the sweet-smiling, lemon-haired one in the gray blazer. Also the adorably cute-aggressive, growling, energetic one with the gray shorts and black leather jacket he was taking off at the end, is Hoshi, our amazing Performance Team leader and main dancer, but also, yes, has an exceptionally beautiful voice that can be soft and sweet, or energetic and powerful, and both raps and sings (the only member that actually holds an official "Lead Vocal" position that is outside of the Vocal Team!). Also, the shorter, kind of business-dressed blonde in the middle, is Woozi, the Vocal Team leader, and genius producer, song-writer (although ALL the members are involved with writing too, to varying degrees), and composer of SVT! He (along with his production partner Bumzu, another artist under Pledis, their label, and one of SVT's vocal coaches when they were trainees) has been involved with the production and writing for probably more than 95+% of Seventeen's whole discography (since debut!!!), and which is a reason for SVT's signature sound and the cohesiveness of its music through the years. Vernon, the rapper you loved, is the member that has the 2nd most involvement in composing/writing behind Woozi. Yes, he's f-ing phenomenally talented, both him as a person and in music. Also, the rapper (named S. Coups) with the 2-toned hair, 2nd from the left, in the white jacket, is our general leader of all of Seventeen as a group, as well as the leader of the Hip-hop Team, and the eldest member. And actually, you do not have to worry about certain members getting left out of the music side of things... 😂 It's really crazy how they manage it, but SVT actually has among the fairest line distribution in all of K-pop! They find a way to make every single member shine all the time!!! Sure, sometimes it will rotate based on if certain songs, or concepts, sounds etc., fit certain members more than others, but I promise, it does all even out in the long run, and with SVT, every single member is about making the team shine, not trying to hog any glory just for themselves. Also, on top of that, they often break into their respective units (Hip-hop, Performance, Vocal Teams), and do a ton of solos, duos, etc. SEVENTEEN has always made it very clear that every single member is equally important to the whole, and that just reinforces the good working relationship they have like a real family (more so than even the other really close K-Pop groups!) Hope you get the time to check them out more soon!!! Definitely the best way to start out is The Super Long Guide to Seventeen by caratline17 (2023 is the most recent version, but is fairly well updated and the editor is great about doing revisions over time). And, yes, there’s definitely NEVER a dull day in Carat Land!!! 😂 Not only because of the number of members, but they really are the funniest, most entertaining group I have ever seen!!! 🤗😘 💎💗💙
As you may know, Seventeen is one of the Kpop industry's very first self-produced idol groups, this means that the members of Seventeen are the ones that create everything themselves, with help and advice from Pledis Entertainment's choreographers, songwriters and rap producers when needed. But the majority of everything you see and hear is created by the members and the professionals are only consulted or asked to assist to bounce ideas off of and to finetune things, etc. When they debuted Pledis Entertainment was a really small company that had almost no money, and Seventeen had to learn how to make do with what they had a lot of the times. That's one of the reasons why Seventeen became a self-produced group, because it saved the company money if they didn't have to pay songwriters, producers, choreographers, etc. to come up with everything for them, and it just so happened that they had some really talented members who were excellent at songwriting, choreographing and producing, etc. Seventeen was instrumental in Pledis' success. Similar to how BigBang pretty much made YG Entertainment what it is today, Seventeen was the group that played a large part in preventing Pledis from going bankrupt. The songs in order of performance in their Killing Voice are: "Adore U," "MANSAE," "Pretty U," "Oh My!" "A-TEEN" "Snap Shoot," "Run to You," "Don't Wanna Cry," "Home," "Our Dawn is Hotter than Day," "Darl+ing," "CLAP," "Left & Right," "HOT," and "Very Nice." This Killing Voice performance is supposed to showcase Seventeen's outstanding vocals, so what you are hearing is a compilation of some of the best parts of their songs that highlight their vocal abilities. They debuted more than 9 years ago, so they have a lot of songs. You are only hearing a small fraction of them and only a few lines of each of the songs (And in some cases -- like with "Pretty U" -- they are singing lines from the middle of the song, so it may sound different when you listen to the actual song.) This is a LIVE performance with 100% live vocals. The way Killing Voice is set up, the last song -- unless it's an encore song -- in any Killing Voice performance video is the group's or artist's most recent song and the one they are promoting at the time of their performance, which is why they always sing the full song and not just a few lines. Therefore, as you saw, this was a comeback for their song "Hot" and we got to hear the whole song. Fun fact: Mansae doesn't really have a clear meaning, it's more of a cheer that you say in Korean when you are happy, similar to "hooray" in English. One of the reasons they chose "Very Nice" as their encore song is because it is one of their most popular songs, and it's what has really made them famous. You can hear TV shows and commercials all over the place in Korea using this song. And on top of all that, it was wrote, composed and choreographed in part by them, so they are all reaping the rewards. :D For example, the majority of the songs you just heard were written by Woozi (the small blond) who is the leader of the vocal unit, with the help of the rest of the vocal unit -- Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, and Seungkwan. Hoshi, who is the leader of the performance unit (dancers), most often creates the group's choreography along with input from the other members of the performance unit -- The8, Jun and Dino. And S.Coups, who is the leader of Seventeen and the leader of the hip-hop unit, usually writes the rap sections with help from the other members of the hip-hop unit -- Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon. They are so hands-on with everything they do that some of the members have even directed, produced and edited a few of their MVs. Seventeen's name comes from the fact that they have 13 members + 3 sub-units (Vocal unit, performance unit and hip-hop unit) + they come together as 1 group = 17. Their fandom name is Carats -- like Seventeen carat diamonds. And their symbol is a diamond. To find 13 young men, who really didn't know each other before becoming a group, that are so multi-talented is impressive. And the fact that they are constantly able to come up with hit after hit and maintain one of the top spots in the industry all on their own, makes them even more mind blowing. Something you should also be aware of, is that Seventeen are known for their choreography and their dance practice videos, so when you watch their MVs, I recommend you combine your reaction with their dance practice videos. They are nicknamed "The Theatre Kids of Kpop," because they are so good at telling a story through their dance. Therefore, in order to really see what makes them extra special, you need to see their dance practice videos.
About line distribution, it surprisingly tends to be fairly equal for Seventeen. And you can imagine how difficult that is because in a 3-4 minute song, they have to split it up between 13 people. So each person gets maybe 10 to 20 seconds to shine. That being said, this group also puts out a lot of subunit music. Not only do the official subunits have their own songs, where you can see the rappers or dancers or the vocal unit be the focus, there’s also other combinations of members that have put out music together. For instance, the leaders of each subunit have a couple of songs together. On one album, they grouped them by age lines. There’s been a couple of duets formed. And other random groupings. And a lot of the members also have solo stuff out there. One member is even an actor and has starred in a Chinese drama. This is assuming you can even pick one favorite anyway. Most people refer to this group as “buy one bias, you get 12 for free.” 😂
As you can tell, Seventeen LOVES performing. Thanks for this reaction. Responding to your comments about fan songs...while I've never counted them, they have many such songs. I hope you'll get to experience them. PS And they can all do everything.
You may want to watch their Lollapalooza Berlin where they performed 19 songs in 90 minutes with live band. Yes they have multiple vocalist, their vocal unit has 5 members, performance unit 4 member and hip-hop unit has 4 members. Although they have units, they all can do all and they can switch unit performances during their fan event. Even if we have biases we love all of them! Their bond is so precious, no one love Seventeen more than Seventeen.
Oh really? When you said that most fan song sounds cheesy or cringe. I don't exactly know about other group but yes I can assure you seventeen songs for their fans are all good. They have a lot. -Thanks -Love letter -Us, again -all my love -campfire -to you -together -smile flower -april shower -headliner They are all good! Hope you will give it a listen when you start the deep dive❤
Thank you for reacting!!, maybe some people have already mentioned this, but I'll say it for the ones who needs it: SEVENTEEN it's a self-produced group, meaning they take part in composing, writing, choreography, etc. 13 (members) + 3 (units: hip hop, performance, vocal) + 1 (team) = 17 The three main vocalists of the group are Seungkwan (22:27), Dk (15:43) - thank you for appreciating him, he's also the one doing most ad libs throughout - and Woozi (13:39) he is SVT's main producer and leader of the Vocal Unit. [Jeonghan (8:31) and Joshua (21:58) -- yes, he is from the US, if you were wondering -- are also part of this unit] They were separated into units since a little before debut, but the truth is everyone in the group can sing, dance and rap; as you can see, Vernon (14:57) he is also a main rapper - he's from NY, half american but grew up in Korea- and part of the Hip Hop Unit, but can sing beautifully. Mingyu (12:06) and Wonwoo(27:04) are part too. S. Coups (18:51) is the main leader of SEVENTEEN and leader of this unit. Lastly, the performance unit's leader Hoshi (13:28), the last two foreign members from China, Jun (16:03) and The8 (13:49) and the youngest of the group, Dino (11:30). One thing about them is: no one loves seventeen more than seventeen, so fear not, they're so involved in what they do, that they have one of the fairest line distributions in kpop, (although the company is the one assigning parts just to avoid conflict) and because they are divided, each unit has songs on their own, every member gets to shine; you could check that out (their most recent releases are: Vocal - Cheers to Youth, Hip Hop - Lalali and Performance - Spell). I hope you come to love them because not only are they amazing performers and creators (known in the industry with titles such as the Kings of Synchronization, Theater Kids of KPop and obviously Self-Prouced Idols), but they're funny afff. If it's something you do, please react to songs along with their 'dance practice' because it hits totally different when you see them dance (my current favorite dance practices of them are DON QUIXOTE, Getting Closer, _World, Rock With You, Ready to Love, Homerun, CALL CALL CALL- but honestly all their choreos are INSANE -). ALSO, they're such a big group, like you said, but the thing is that they can get very creative and release different combos within the group ex. Light a Flame by the '96 liners (Woozi, Wonwoo, Hoshi and Jun), 2 minus 1 by Joshua and Vernon, Cheers by the leaders (S. Coups, Hoshi and Woozi), Last Night by Jeonghan and Wonwoo; and a lot more. Again thank you for your reaction and I hope you have fun slipping into the diamond life haha -- this is a reference to the first song of theirs they performed before debut: Shinning Diamond --
The "natural" rapper you liked is S.Coups. He is the leader of the group and also the leader of the hiphop unit Line distribution is fairly even in SVT. There will obviously be songs where some would have more but then in the next, the others will get more so across an album, it's a pretty good distribution for a 13 member group.
Some of your comments are really interesting, do you work in music? I think you'll have fun time exploring Seventeen's discography because as others have said member Woozi (+ Bumzu, the other producer) produce almost all of their songs and they write their own lyrics, so they feel very genuine. They also don't shy away from doing bright and cheerful concepts which is often not the first choice for boy groups. Looking forward to your next reaction :)
6:15 The actual song doesn’t start like this. They pick this song up towards the middle of it for this performance. The actual songs starts with the guy in the striped shirt (Wonwoo). But a lot of their song choices for this show possibly revolved around limiting the participation of Wonwoo for personal reasons. 20:44 From what I understand, S. Coups actually auditioned as a vocalist and intended to be a vocalist. He has a really lovely singing voice. But he had to train to be a rapper. Maybe what helps with his authenticity is how they all take a heavy part in the writing process for their music, especially the rappers. The rappers tend to write their own raps.
I've seen a few people mention S. Coups, so I think I mixed the rappers' names up badly because I was trying to talk about Vernon there. But I do like S. Coups.
the setlist for this killing voice is not my favorite they have great songs I would recommend you to listen to shadow, to you, fast pace , good to me , don quixote, kidult, dont listen in secret ,together ,habit ,rock with you , fear, monster ,anyone, thanks ,ready to love and home;run
