I will try my best to explain how this game works...
Nations earn gold while at peace: the amount they earn is based on the number of cities and land area said country has. They steadily lose gold while at war.
There is a military strength feature which affects how much tiles a country can take in war (the highest strength is 6 and the lowest is 1). When the strength is 1, a star and a red cross show up beside the country's name. When the strength is 6, a star and green arrow show up beside it.
If a city is green, it means it is a core of the nation that owns it. This means that if said nation loses its capital, it can change it to a core. Core cities also cannot revolt from the nation that controls it.
Edit: When a nation loses all of its cores and its capital, it will capitulate. Any nation can take land that it owned after that, not just nations involved in the war.
This explains a lot, but what purpose does gold serve?

if you start this game with the scenario of the whole Earth, then even WorldBox will be more historical. For me, the minor countries became whole empires, and Ukraine captured Russia in a couple of seconds, then Poland captured Ukraine, and then Northern Macedonia captured Poland, Ukraine rebelled and captured northern Macedonia
