    I used to ski quite a lot. I was always a take your time skier. I wanted to mainly just be outdoors & enjoy the incredible scenery. Plus I had & still don’t have very good knees. I wanted to watch these videos to see the techniques this instructor uses. Very impressed! I never started out with one ski. Love her step by step & thorough instructions! I’m much older now & have some health concerns that prevent me from still being able to ski & I really miss it! I grew up in the Chicago area but have been living in northern Colorado for 31 years.

    Back in the snow this week after an almost 30 year break. Content is invaluable. Wonderful to have daughter skiing for the first time. Was in stiches watching snow plow video on how adults are anxious learners. Trying to get my daugther parallel down the mountain on her second day whist she is happy snow plowing her way down at speed, also wanting to get away and be independent.

    This reminds me so much of like the way people taught you things in the 1980s. This is the tone and style around 65% of all my teachers used in junior high/high school. That is VERY MUCH A COMPLENT! Doesnt' make statements that sound like questions, loves what she's talking about, wants YOU to love it, isn't bashful about any of it, sometimes a bit intense, but that's how a good teacher TEACHES. Well, on top of all that there's the street cred of all the olympics medals and stuff. So cool that this is a world class skier just being herself, being super enthusiastic teaching basics to everyday skiers. Zero pretense, tons of enthusiasm. Tons of know-how.

I can ski, and feel like I’m a capable and confident skier, but it’s a whole other ball game to teach someone! They have never been on skis, so need need some very basic instruction, if they like it, they can go and have more formal lessons. We’ll only have 2 days, so for now getting boots on, moving around and the old pizza and French fries will give them a little taste and help them decide if the want more. This and the other videos are very helpful and will save us $$$$$ on basic beginner ski lessons.

    Deb - great work, love this project. A couple of suggestion for you as you introduce movements:
    1) I saw that when you were working with one ski, you and the student had the ski on opposite feet initially. When demonstrating movements, I've found it's helpful when showing the exact same thing. In this case, consider asking the student what foot they feel most comfortable on, have them start with that ski and as the instructor, use the same.
    2) you introduced pole usage with what I call the Bull Fighter turn (very effective by the way inspires confidence) where you had the poles downhill of the student as they slowly stepped around into and back out of the fall line. Really important - show them how to hold the poles. Tuesday was gripping the grips (top of the shafts), whereas you had tripped the top of the pole - essentially make the pole an extension of your arm. I've found that gripping the tops of the poles (as you did) engages the core, whereas gripping the shafts causes the student to bend at the waist, which naturally moves the CoM behind the BoS as it causes a squatting like movement.
    Can't wait to watch 2 & 3. Thanks for sharing....

      This is my problem. First time ever stepping into snow with ski or boot last week and I am having great difficulty stopping or slowing myself, which of course is a core requirement for any progression. I have the sensation of separating my heels into a wedge but in reality, they are not moving out anywhere near as far as needed and my ski tips end up crossing, I gain too much speed and need someone to catch me before I crash. Not good. Perhaps I should be twisting with my knees more or leaning forward to get weight off my heels so they can slide adequately? I’m stuck and really need some pointers on how to achieve effective wedge.

    Control, that's what I wasn't getting as a kid. So I have to face the skis inward like a triangle to slow down and stop. I'd keep forcing myself to fall over so I wouldn't accelerate out of control. It's scary going down a big hill when you don't know how to stop. I'd have nightmares.

    I talk too much. My long original post is below, as if anyone would want to read all that rambling. Bottom line- DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY MULTI-DAY SKI SCHOOLS IN THE EAST (Canada or the US)?
    HI Deb (or anyone else with an opinion)! I really like the video. I've skied 8 times in my adult life with no lessons (had some when I was a kid but that was a LONG time ago). So for people like me that for all practical purposes are total beginners- can you recommend any all-day ski schools in the East (Pennsylvania up through Quebec)? I went to a GREAT whitewater canoe school in Ontario a few years back, it was five days- all day- and man did it improve my skills! What I'm getting at here is I'm ready to pick up another ill-advised hobby, and I'd like to get some good solid fundamentals. Are there "ski schools" in the eastern US/Canada?

    • @DebArmstrongSkiStrong
      @DebArmstrongSkiStrong  3 года назад

      Sure, there are ski schools back east. Many. Most ski areas of any size will have a ski school. Have you had any luck yet finding anything? What ski areas are you close to?

      THANK YOU FOR THE RESPONSE!
      For now I live in Virginia; most of my skiing is at Liberty near Gettysburg, PA. Hoping to move north in a few years! Liberty offers one hour and two hour lessons; as far as i know they are good. However, I am looking to immerse into a beginner's skills clinic for a few days. Happy to travel anywhere from PA to Quebec. I have perused a bunch of ski areas in the NE, and I'm not finding schools that offer 3-7 hour instruction for several dedicated days in a row for adults. I want to get to the "trained beginner" level quickly. Small group lessons, one-on one, etc. Maybe I should just call a ski area and book the same instructor for three days in a row for three hours at a time, or something like that.

    Remember people that your ski instructor makes minimum wage (yes, you paid $400 plus for a private lesson) yet lives in a resort town where rent can be thousands a month and food can cost twice what you pay at home so please tip them. They depend on your generosity!
