Dolly also started an early childhood literacy program called Imagination Library that mails free books to children from birth through age five. She's given away over 100 MILLION books.
Yep all 4 of our boys have received a book a month their whole lives.
wow, i didn't know she started that
She also writes and publishes children books.
i'm not crying, you're crying!
@@drothganger no you're crying!
Dolly is such a kind hearted person. She deserves the world
Her heart is so big, she needs those gargantuan bewbs to contain it!
Who wants to hug Dolly Parton.... This guy does!
She sure is generous! My kids received their first books from her "Imagination Library". She mails one book a month to kids for FREE from birth to age five. Just sign up on her website.
Of course! Look up year of the Pig/Boar.
Scratch the surface and you will find A Gold Of Heart!!
Casey's a sweetie-pie too....does anyone like Casey?
I knew the story of why she wrote the song, did not know about her buying his music catalog and then gifted it back to him. If this woman had kept every dollar she made she be one of the wealthiest musicians ever, but she has the most generous heart of any celebrity I’ve ever heard of
She's still relevant on many levels today...so that karma is more valuable.
Her charity projects are many but I like her literacy based ones especially--putting books into little hands matters a lot to her.
She truly is an angel.
She has been sending all the children books every month.
Lazy Kid it says she’s only worth 500 million
They left out the part about how Elvis Presley wanted to buy I will always love you off of Dolly Parton, but told her that she would not have any of the writing credits. But Dolly believed in her work so much that she refused his offer. And he basically told her that without him the song would go no where. But she believed in herself and believed in what the song could become. She then later agreed to give the song to Whitney Houston, but Dolly Parton still has the writing credits for it. I just love that story. Just reminds me to never let anyone take credit for your work and if you truly believe in something don’t ever take second best.
Reminds me of what Harlen Ellison told a young DJ who read a story of his on the air with out asking. "You always give the writer credit for his story and offer to pay him even if it's only a dollar, which is what he charged the young man.
I think she did that because she knew that Whitney would slay THE HELL out of that song. Elvis, meh, not so much.
Wow Elvis is a douchebag
Makes me wonder - was Elvis the dork, or his management - as so often it is?
They also left out Whitney Houston, but this is about Dolly, not not Dolly.
Dolly Parton is just the epitome of a classy, southern woman. It’s funny they asked Dolly in an interview if she felt jealous or how she felt when “I Will always Love You” became the late, great Whitney Houston’s song. She said she heard Whitney’s version on the radio & it brought tears to her eyes because it was so beautiful. Then she laughed and said, “besides do you know how much money that girl (Whitney) made for me with that song!?” Haha. Love them both & I’m glad Dolly is at least still with us!
Right!!! Lol
Dolly has the best attitude. She's a good woman. God bless her
Yes !!! ‘She gets the credit I get the cheques’
Dolly said it best “When I wrote I will always Love you I could put money in the bank. When Whitney Houston sang it I could go buy the bank” dam ......💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
:-) Dolly's voice is lovely and tailored to country. Whitney's five-octave, lush, spectacular voice took that awesome song and wowed everyone!
I seem to remember Dolly suggesting a duet with Whitney and Whitney rebuffing her.
Dolly,s version is hands down the best version, you can hear the true emotion. Whitney sings it well but lacks the underlying feeling that's the true driving force of the song.
@@edwardsmith7739 it depends on your taste. I love both versions, but I prefer Whitney's version because it builds in emotion. Whitney's version isn't subtle, its powerful and I'm sure Dolly knows this. Without Dolly the song wouldn't exist and Whitney gave her song a bigger audience.
@@edwardsmith7739 I have to agree. Dolly sang it as pure as its real message, maybe because she wrote it. Whitney's was like "Hey!!!! Look at me!!! I'm a great singer!! I have a high register!!!!!!"
I cant believe dolly's past.. so humble . no wonder she succeeded her career :)
TooThLESS I LIKE YOU ALREADY! I 😁 FUNNY , love your kindness and HUMOR! Love it
That’s why she’s a fucking LEGEND
Lol she still alive she is 73.
Bitch she's not dead
It was the tits. It was always the tits.
She never talks about him suing her or her giving back the music catalogue (well, maybe in her auto-biography); just that she wrote the song for him about leaving the show/duo.
She has such a huge heart. I know she does a lot for poverty, literacy and other programs, too. And she’s so doggone funny. Class act.
What’s not to love about Dolly Parton...she is so much more than her singing success..she’s an inspiration for everyone!
the theme park in her hometown, dollywood? she had it built to create jobs because pigeon forge was on the verge of collapse. she grew up in absolute destitution and so did most of the people she knew early in her life, and she wanted to give back to the community that helped her become who she is. i love that woman with a fervor.
Fancy’s Folly & brillo pad - I hope they one day do a biopic as they did with Johnny Cash & June Carter. It would be so inspiring.
tori2dles she’s one of those exceptional people...totally unique...huge heart...
@@tori2dles oh i would love to see that. walk the line was phenomenal.
This just makes me want to see Dolly Parton do an episode of Drunk History.
marceline88 that would be bananas. Also, I’m betting “absolutely trashed” for her is , like, two beers.
@@kellyalves756 She's old and country, it's the opposite. Trashed for her is like two gallons of whiskey.

Such of kind hearted person ever, and i will always love her :" and remember her
Dolly is such a sweet, classy lady. One of those people that despite her massive success always treats others with kindness and humility.
Julian Birch I don’t know why, but I read this comment in my head in her voice.
Dolly Parton is honestly the epitome of a true christian. Dolly says she is a Christian and so even though I don't believe in church but if there ever was a person who epitomizes what a christian should be it's her. She is a pure soul.
Yep, exactly!!!!
Same. I am not Christian either, and I can't stand having religion shoved down my throat, but I have the utmost respect for Christians who are men and women of true faith, and she's definitely one!
Also, Porter Wagoner sounds like the absolute worst. I won't expect any woman to stick around if I'm half as bad as him.
Ankit Gautam Women didn’t have the same clout. If they wanted to be successful they had no choice but to “hitch their wagon” to a man.
her gave her the start of her career, no matter how bad he is, gotta respect that, which she did
Every damned man gets one chance with an Angel in life to try and save his soul. Dolly was his Angel.
Who knows what he did for her to be that loyal to him. She's gay, it's not a romantic thing. But some kind of love. Honestly none of us deserves that, but a few will be lucky anyway...
@Christobanistan You know, I've always believed she was gay because I heard it once from "music industry insiders" who said it very matter of factly, like it was a Jodie Foster type situation where everyone knew who the partner was etc but it just wasn't ok to print.
But looking at it now, it seems to be at least more complicated than that. People might just not have understood her and her relationship with her best friend Judy Ogle and to her husband, and so they make these assumptions, like people do. I don't know. So I guess I shouldn't contribute to making assumptions about her feelings and life.
I remember when Dolly talked about her flamboyant style and said “I swear if I wasn’t a woman I’d be a drag queen” lol She’s always been the truth.
My favorite Dolly quote was "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap." I love her for being so unapologetically herself.
One time Dolly Parton entered a Dolly Parton look alike contest against dozens of drag queens and didn't even make the top 20
@@bellyjelly0812 ugh, bless her.
That self deprecating attitude is what makes me respect her all the more. I can’t stand performers that take themselves too seriously. Its just entertainment after all.

Dolly Parton is probably one of the kindest celebrities in modern American history. She also supports literacy and feeding the poor.
And is a very Christian woman who supports LGBT rights and has a huge gay following.
seeing her on the Porter Wagner's show was the only thing I liked about growing up in the south. Glad that she is a generous humanitarian too!
She might be Jesus.
She also casually helped fund Covid vaccine research, which led to the Moderna version. What a legend.
Back in the early 2000's,my cousin Steve worked for BMI publishing in Nashville. He said Dolly was one of the sweetest, most genuine people he has ever met. Steve told me that she said 'hello' to,and hugged, everyone in the building. Including the janitors and support staff. Dolly also remembered every employee's spouse and their children's names, asking how each family member was doing Easily the nicest star he had the pleasure to do business with. Also,he said that Vince Gill was a real sweet guy.
This has long been my suspicion of Dolly Parton the person as compared to Dolly Parton the star. She always seems so genuine!
I would ugly cry if I ever met Dolly.
Same. Dolly Parson's my mama, she just don't know it.
Me too.
One of the best moments of my life was meeting her! Her energy and smile are literally unmatched.
Although I only really like a handful of her songs (and tbh I haven't heard most of them, I'm sure), I have always enjoyed her movies and ALWAYS adored her public persona and her interviews. I have never seen footage of her where she wasn't 100% a lady, and also funny, charismatic, and just always seems so genuine and that she is speaking from the heart. I think her public persona is amped up with the wigs and the glitzy costumes and makeup, but I think the personality she portrays is probably just her real personality. You never see contradictions in stories nor in how she acts from one interview to the other. I would love to have the opportunity to just chat with her.
I would vaporlock and pass out honestly.
This is probably the most beautiful story on drunken history
I'd say the one about Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan was more beautiful
That was freaking AWSOME.
Dolly u da man.
We all need a Dolly in our lives.
We already do all have a Dolly in our lives every time we listen to her music.
We all need to be a bit more like Dolly.
Gir's Taco amen!
Are we going to dismiss the fact that he was giving the middle finger to everyone at the end of the video.. it killed me XD
I noticed, but he was so drunk I'm not sure he was doing it as an FU; maybe it was just the way his fingers were splayed.
Yup, I saw it
I thought it was because he was like, "fuck you guys for recording me while I was drunk singing." He didn't even remember he sang hahaha he was embarrassed that it was recorded.
Honestly I don't know who he is and found him a little bit annoying, so I didn't notice.
Dolly Parton is the best human being ever

My mother met Dolly back in the 80's, there was no end to this woman's kind heart, the couple stories she had of her.
"Back me or back the f*** off" why is that so mf iconic, need a senior quote, honey I gotchu don't worry
and she does the children's literacy program and she *owns* her image and now she's funding COVID vaccine research?? HUGE respect for Dolly Parton.
Dolly metaphorically and literally saving lives, what a goddess.
Interviewer: What do you think of Whitney Houston's cover?
Dolly Parton: oh it's such a lovely cover.. And it also made me richer..
It says a lot about a person when all the comments on an Internet video are speaking highly of the them🤘
Are we going to ignore the fact that even after he tried suing her she still loved him and gave him so much? 💙😭
well since it was in the video, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we indeed did NOT ignore that fact. ;)
I wish I had a dime for everytime someone sang "Jolene" to me.....
Were you born when the song played on the radio?

Dolly is such a class act...he didn’t deserve her friendship..
I always loved her movies as a kid, but the more I hear about her lately the more respect I have for her as a person. She has always been a pure class act, no matter how big she got or how much bs she had to face. She must be a rare blessing to the people in her life. That's the kind of legacy I'd want to leave behind!
No one has a bigger heart that Dolly Parton, no one. There is absolutely no competition. There's a reason why her songs, both vocally and in scripture, are heavenly and legendary.
Dam Dolly!
Your too good, man.
Porter wagner did not deserve you.
Words cannot express how much I LOVE Dolly Parton...my grandma let me watch "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" in secret when I was little, and the scene where she sings "I Will Always Love You" to Burt Reynolds still gets me to this day...it's such an honest and heartbreaking song, one of the best
I give dolly so much credit for being able to write her songs all alone.. She never forget where she came from, poverty and adversity.

I hope every bit of this is true or true enough. It makes me happy to think that someone possesses and practices the kind of grace you only hear about sporadically, even in the face of being backstabbed by a friend. By the sheer force of her determination to be true to her convictions, she plays it like it doesn't matter if she succeeds or not, because it's not about the money. But, she does and her success is immensely gratifying to witness. If she's not an earthbound angel, no one is.

Dolly is such an amazing lady. She's married to a same men (Carl Thomas Dean) for almost 55 years and they never had any issue in their marriage.
That's amazing considering Dolly is one of the biggest celebrities on the planet.

You don’t write songs like that to a man you’re not related to unless you’ve been together...he took advantage of her feelings for him PERIOD. He didn’t deserve any of the affection and understanding she showed him. This was a sweet story! This was a lesson in long term emotionally manipulation...🤨😔
Or more about she enjoyed huge success and rose above holding on to past grudges. She also probably felt it provided her more to be able to do what she did for a man she really attributed her success to no matter how much success she had after she left him. She may have overpaid it but she had nothing but generosity and love. Life is too short to hold on to negativity and she had the means to help someone who helped her in the beginning. She found some real inner peace to be able to do what she did and is living her best life. Most of us wish we could say that.
Don’t undermine her professional trajectory by only interpreting it as a woman scorned. She was a newlywed in that period. She’s still married to that man. Just because you can’t conceive of a strong, platonic connection in your world doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Most of the songs she wrote in that period were just as creative and just as unrelated to romantic love.
I had no idea Dolly wrote the song that Whitney got all the credit for.
Should've watch the movie.

She sings it in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” to Burt Reynolds. She plays a golden hearted madame and he plays the sheriff. Hence, the song when she and the gals have to pack up and leave.

Just when I thought I couldn't love Dolly Pardon anymore. ❤
When I was about 5 years old, Dolly came to my hometown, Mobile Alabama. My daddy took me and my brother to the airport to greet her (behind my mamas back) and I got to take a picture with her. She was so sweet about it. When we got home and shared our experience with mama, she threw the camera away and I never seen the pictures. Broke my heart.
But I do have a great picture of mama (pregnant with me) sitting on the arm of Loretta Lynn's recliner, with Loretta Lynn and one of the twins in the background. My parents were invited in, Loretta Lynn is another sweetheart!

Dolly Parton was a local celebrity before she was 11 years old. She was on a radio show and was considered a child star. Also, Jolean was the name of a red headed bank teller her husband used to simi flirt with.
@1:43 *Dolly wrote Jolene about a bank teller trying to take her hubs while she was out on the road. She said the lady whooped her and she whooped her husband* Sad & Funny how she tells it🤣🤣🤣🤣.

I am not buying that they are really drunk or drinking. It doesn't matter but it's their concept.
No shit right, takes the knob off an empty bottle and drinks out of it
Listened to “I Will Always Love You” after this and cried my eyes out because fact: it’s probably the most beautiful song ever written.
“auburn haired girl”
Yeah, I showed it to my coworkers and we're all having a nerd rage moment over the deep brown hair that is supposedly "auburn."
From what I’ve read, the Jolene in the song was actually inspired by two different people- A little girl named Jolene and a bank teller she knew with auburn hair. Dolly took the two most distinctive things (the hair and the name) and combined them into to the character of Jolene in the song
abstractwatercolor the comment was abt the fact that he said auburn haired girl and the show didnt bother to find a girl w red hair for the re-enactment
Dolly is awesome. I don't know how anybody could dislike her.
