Yaesu FT-857D repair | Part 1

Bought this Yaesu FT-857D second hand with problems on the receive side being intermittent. I tested and found that was true. After some warming up time it went back working. Nevertheless I found so many odd things inside.
The big problem is the MAIN UNIT. Some component ed are visibly faulty, and many traces are destroys. There are also signs of corrosion all around the board.
PA unit is ok though.
The front panel has some issues too. One spacer on the SEL knob is missing and the switch to select SP/PH is destroyed. At least the display is working perfectly as it’s been already replaced due to the line missing issue. Clearly so many hands have been in there.
I’ll try the best I can to restore it.

Awesome video. Thanks. Could you possibly show what the tuning knob looks like when assembled but when the knob is off? I cant find a single video of how the coil is supposed to sit under the knob. I hate when people used to ask me for stuff like this on my old tutorial videos for keyboards on my other channel, so I don't expect anything BUT if u end up doing another 857 tear down video, please show the knob fully assembled!

Thank you for the video. I've subbed because I'm now interested in seeing how the project turns out. The last texh was not told that neatness counts! But i also wonder if this radio was struck by lightning?

Olá Diego. Calculo que este seja o equipamento que referiu. Pois, de facto está muito mexido! Eu acho que muita gente pensa que por estes equipamentos são pequenos, que são faceis de trabalhar. Mas é completamente o contrário. Isto porque ao serem compactos, são constituidos por componentes muito pequenos e sensiveis. A simples troca dos filtros ceramicos, por exemplo, pode tornar-se num pesadelo se não for bem feita. Ainda assim, muita gente segue em frente sem cuidados. Eu diria que o Diego faz bem em recuperar o equipamento como projecto, no entanto essa main unit está demasido mexida e alterada para uma reparação com mão de obra. Simplesmente não valeria a pena, tendo em conta o preço do equipamento. Como projecto pessoal, porque não... Tenho a certeza que vai conseguir resolver esses problemas. Vou ficar atento aos proximos episódios.

Bom dia Victor, obrigado pelo comentário. Efetivamente concordo consigo, não valeria a pena arranjar essa placa. Tudo começou quando adquiri um outro 857 para colocar no carro com atas 120 mas o rádio tinha problema de sensibilidade da vhf segundo o colega que vendeu. Na verdade tinha muito mais. No lado inferior da placa PA tem uma carbonização na última parte antes de sair para a main unit e um diodo estava estourado. Tenho uma boa lista de peças para trocar que em princípio nem conseguia encontrar por serem já obsoletos. Se você reparou no fondo da mesa vê-se esse outro 857 aberto. Depois adquiri este segundo 857 que você viu o vídeo. Eu vou tentar recuperar os dois mas se não for possível vou fazer de dois um. Um caro abraço e tudo de bom.

followed most of it I got a question on the ribbon does it also control the memory and also is there a way to check the EEPROM I heard it controls the memory as well, is there a way to test it without replacing the part.

No memory, is just for sending audio to the SP/PH 3.5mm jack and the voltage for the external analog meter. In fact if you uninstall that flat the radio works normally.
