They do like banana. It just takes longer to break down just like corn on the cob and Avacado peels. Grinded Eggshells provide the grit that the worms need for their digestion.

They like the eggshells because they need the grit to chew--just like chickens that use pebbles with their gizzard becase they don't have teeth!

Great video update! I have the same worm bin & love it! I haven’t added my second level yet & I’m at about 18 months. Someone suggested placing a popsicle stick in the corner of your worm bin so you remember which corner you fed so that’s what’s helped me.

That's so clever! Excellent tip. Hope you reach your second layer soon 😀

I've created a makeshift version of this out of pallet wood, as I'm in the UK. About to start my vermicomposting journey. This video has encouraged me a lot!
I'm guessing you couldn't give the worms ALL of your food scraps so as not to overfeed them?

Nice work, I hope it turns out for you! Giving the worms all the food scraps would likely mean they couldn't keep up with all the food. They do eat quite a bit, but I find that in winter they slow down and go through scraps noticeably slower. When there is too much food and the worms aren't able to eat it quick enough, the bin risks getting a bit stinky while the scraps decompose, so you have to find a balance that works for your wormies. Each system is pretty unique and some people find their worms are super fast, while others are slower. Once you get established you'll learn their rhythm and be a pro in no time! Hope this helps 😀

Well done on your fruitful hobby. I'm just a little surprised that with all the worm videos around these days you "don't know why your worms like egg shells so much", although you hit the nail on the head when you said "maybe it helps their digestion". Yes! That's exactly what it does. Worms have a gizzard -just like chickens - and no teeth. They use the egg shell (or oyster shell or minuscule rocks) to grind up their food inside the gizzard. In the wild there are many such things for the worms to use but in their controlled environment inside "farms" there isn't any so keep adding those crushed egg shells. If you mix them up with some corn meal (flour), wholemeal flour and ground oats they will love it even more. Good luck with it all.

The subreddit r/vermicomposting is absolutely fascinating as well.
I'll be adding my third layer soon and I am so excited! I found that after a month of adding the second layer they started to really grow in population!!
Next year I'll hopefully have a system in place where I have a constant stream of fertilizer for my house jungle that is ever-growing. XD
I'd love a second layer update! Good luck with your wormy adventure!

Thanks for the tips! I’m excited to see what happens in layer 2, and will most definitely keep the updates coming 🥰

Might not stop the trash to the environment but you get the benefits for yourself

I was wondering if the wood leaked. Great video. 😎
