When actually talented, thoughtful people make music
This band is severely, criminally underrated. They have a preternatural talent for infusing truly dark, sinister foreboding music with gorgeous earworm melody that practically COMPEL the listener to sing along. The difficulty of finding synergy with such wildly contrasting elements is staggering for even the most skilled & talented songwriters. Whenever I listen to this band I find myself wishing they had another 20 albums of music for me to explore. When I realize that's not possible, I wish there was another band who could come close to this brilliant brand of "metalgaze" perfection--only to go searching in vain. So inevitably I return to True Widow, quite worried I'll eventually tire of them...yet countless plays later & they're still likely my favorite band. (PS It's not a surprise my other favorite band DIIV credited listening to True Widow as one of the major influences for the sound on the new "Deceiver" LP, a quiet slow-burning classic)
Ratings, are severely, criminally overrated.
Hey man, try O'Brother. I think you'd love them. They do this ominous atmosphere thing quite well. They kind of scratch the same itch for me, just a little differently. My first favorites were Slow Sin, Burn and Complicated End Times.

The production is perfect on this. Delicious layers of vocal echoes rising above a wash of beautiful noise that's both soothing and driving. A true force to reckon with. Just gorgeous!

A band doesn't have to be original to be good! I like this group, that crunchy laid back sound, even if it's been done before by Sabbath, Soundgarden, Helmet, etc., it's still great to listen to.

Hey N.D. I was actually responding to a critique that is no longer there and they used Soundgarden, Sabbath, and Helmet as examples. Maybe my response made them delete it! :) Personally, I feel that there is nothing new under the sun but True Widow definitely took what they were inspired by and fit it into their own style for sure! I hope it didn't sound like I was taking away from their brilliance. Love this band! You should also check out Kyuss, Sleep, Alunah, and especially the bands coming out of Chile like La Hell Gang, Chico de Nazca, and The Ganjas. Cheers! Nice to meet someone with good taste. P.S. I'll be seeing PJ Harvey soon. ;)
