- A unique collaboration between the residents of the housing estates in Leeds and filmmaker Penny Woolcock, Tina Goes Shopping is a powerful mixture of drama and documentary filmmaking.
Tina is an incredibly resourceful single mum. Realising that hardly anyone on her estate has enough money to buy things in the shops she sets up - "a shopping service" - a business stealing to order and selling the goods at half price. Seeing herself as a "grafter", she sets to work collecting the orders for her weekly trip into Leeds. Little does she know that when she returns to sell her wares in the local pub that the smack heads have been there earlier and undercut her.
Her dad is known as "Don" in recognition of his status as a kind of godfather to the area. Incredibly knowledgeable, Don is very well read as well as being good at keeping one step ahead of the local police. That is until he beats Aaron, Tina's drug addict boyfriend, one too many times, and Aaron turns into a grass.On this estate everyone has a little scam going and Aaron is no different. As a matter of course the young lads, Shane, Porky and Verbal in the area steal cars and joyride them, yet Aaron has to take it one step further - stealing a cow.
Aaron's not the only one forced by desperate means into doing something extremely risky. Don's sister, Queenie, mum to eleven kids, owes thousands of pounds to the debt collectors. As the Monday Man, a particularly menacing collector, comes to call, keen to exact either money or revenge, Queen must put on the acting performance of a lifetime.
Sphinx is (or was) a pub right at the bottom of Cottingley Towers. You see the towers as they enter the pub. It later changed it's name to Cottingley Arms (I think) but it was a right dump! Not even sure of the pub is still open. They got it bang on the money with this film.

The Cottingley Arms! IIt got burnt out & whats left is boarded up. Those towers are a proper dump! I knew someone who liven there. I din't go down to see him much!

Remember winning my singles game on that very pool table to win the title for Blooming Rose against Sphinx. Some years back now though....

where is the Sphinx? Me 7 my dad have been arguing over it, he says its a made up name, but i said i'm sure i've seen it on my travels around Leeds.
