  • Today we're taking a moment to remember our dear friend Joe Patrych, who passed this week at 68.
If you'll recall, last year we did a series on Joe, interviewing him on everything from life in New York City, Piano Row, the great pianists, and studio recording setups. Well, in a last gift to us, we found that we had somehow missed posting one of his episodes- so we bring it to you now, in memoriam. This is Joe, unfiltered, on the top 5 (and more) concerts he attended, as of 2022.
Joe was a legend in the New York music community: everyone knew him. As I mention in the video, you were extremely likely to run into him at any piano concert in the city. You mention his name to another musician, 'Do you know Joe Patrych?', and the reply came with an immediate grin, 'Yeah, I know Joe.' I could always count on him for a terrible joke, or a really good joke. 'You know what the problem with so and so's Piano Trio No. 3 is? It's that there was a Number 1 and 2!'
In the early days of aTonalHits, back when we were college kids trying to get a couple albums off the ground, we turned to Joe. He always had our backs, with a suggestion, a hard earned compliment, or just some needed casual levity after a day at the studio. Joe was our recording engineer and producer for the first four of our albums, and making that constant schlep from Brooklyn the Bronx early in the morning was brutal at best. But climbing up the stairs to his studio and seeing him framed in the doorway with a grin on his face and a couple cats trying to escape the apartment made a day in the studio bearable. And, of course, the inevitable visits to the Italian Deli post recording. 'Try the chicken parmesan, it's phenomenal!'
Joe was an immensely kind human being, taking all sorts of young musicians under his wing. And, excuse my french here, but we're talking about Joe, so: he didn't take bullshit. Not ever. He said exactly what he meant, and knew the sort of playing he liked. To earn a compliment from him was high praise, and you knew it to be nothing but the truth. He taught us how to record, how to edit, how to position mics, how to chase a cat out of the studio. He leant us a fantastically sensitive set of ears at every one of our myriad recording sessions, with thoughtful comments or suggestions. Joe, we've been missing you this past week, and we'll miss you always. You've been an inspiration, mentor and friend to us since our very earliest years in New York City, and you always will be in our hearts and thoughts. Rest in Peace my friend.

I relate with Joe, I'm in my early 20s and recently attended a bunch of concerts, and I enjoy doing so of course.

I just came here to wish you a merry christmas, then noticed this video has a sad subject. All the best to you. It's hard to lose a good friend, which seems to have been come way too early.
