Thanks for your longlist predictions, the best we have at the moment! As a wild and blind bet I'd put my money on Richard Powers at least being shortlisted (I think it might win).
Great list! The Promise, The Performance and Open Water are high on my TBR. I do hope Jones Jr and Ishiguro make the list. Toibin is also right there on my TBR, so excited for this one. Soyinka’s novel sounds crazy!!
I love this list! Really excited to check out The Performance- it sounds like something I’d love. I had no idea Colm Tóibín had a new book coming out! Like you said, it really feels like a year where a good few former winners/nominees will be on the list (Ishiguro, Tóibín, Galgut, McGregor, Powers, perhaps also Sunjeev Sahota and Richard Flanagan).
I feel like I should be more creative with my guesses picking outsiders but I went for the safer bets. And yes, Sahota and Flanagan also likely. Somehow The Living Sea of Waking Dreams passed me by and I've embarrassed to admit I've still not read his Booker winner.
@@EricKarlAnderson No worries- I think you’re right, though- it’s a year where a few of the more expected big-hitters have released (or will release) some big books! And your choices for newer writers all sound really exciting!
I don’t know how people manage to make predictions, and often quite accurate ones! But I love yours, and I now want to read many of these so thank you 😊
I mostly read new publications so I get an idea of what might be eligible from that but it's really impossible to accurately predict what might be listed since so many novels are possibilities.
@@EricKarlAnderson That's very true! I guess because I'm not super in the new release loop it seems like such a gutsy thing to do, haha. I'm really looking forward to your reaction to the longlist now! (Once it's announced of course c:)
Pen in hand....go! Ok Eric, wow, well done. I have read 4 of your picks and predictions and would like to add one of my own: China Room by Sunjeev Sahota. Now if your choices are spot on, I would LOVE Galgut or Alison MacLeod to win, but the worthy winner is Wole Soyinka, whose book I can't wait to read.
Tóibín’s novel sounds right up my street 🤩 Never read any of his so I’m down if this appears. He’s been longlisted a lot, yeah? Also didn’t know Soyinka had a novel out. Such a shout! I’d be surprised if he isn’t on the longlist.
As a follower of the Boooker in the USA, I do love the midnight announcements! Works better for my time zone! 😂 But I am still finishing up Who They Was and need to read This Mournable Body from the 2020 list, hoping I'll get those done before moving on to the 2021 list!
I’d love to see Natasha Brown’s novel Assembly make the longlist but if you think Open Water might be too short, then Assembly really might be too short. I think you are right about a longlist filled with more established authors than last year but there are always real surprises.
Good insights! I've read quite a few of those mentioned and agree that they would be worthy of longlisting. Three others I would add include 'Detransition Baby' (Peters),'The Fortune Men' (Mohamed) and 'The Octopus Man' (Gibson)
Thanks for predictions Eric. here in Peru was published "el espía del inca", that is a novel about the incas's empire end and the spanish soldiers arrival in 1532. It is not yet translated into English.
Interesting list. Not that many titles have crossed my path. I read Klara and the Sun (4*), Lean Fall Stand (3*). I'm very keen to read Powers' latest and we'll see what else. I've just placed library holds for The High House and the Performance.
I haven’t read any of the books on this list but there are a few I’m hoping to read before the year is over!. Also I bought at night all blood is black because of your review 🥰
So many unique and interesting ones. I have yet to read any of them, I've been reading mostly commercial fiction lately. Klara and the Sun is on my bookshelf ready to be read soon though.
Wow, a few there I haven't heard of. I've only read The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr, so far. It is very good. I really have to read my copy of Klara and the Sun I have a couple more on reserve already at the library- This One Sky Day by Leone Ross The Performance by Claire Thomas Interesting list!
What an interesting video. I might vary from you in Klara and the Sun because I thought The Employees by Olga Ravn did the subject better…I read The Employees a few times and each time I read it I felt it said more. I really loved The High House but am not sure the writing is innovative enough. It told a good and very scary story about the environment and how we would live with the consequences of climate change but I am not sure if it is the sort of book I will remember years from now, much as I enjoyed it. But I haven’t read anymore..so more reading to do 😃😃😃
I have a love-hate relationship with the Booker. It’s probably the big prize that interests me the least. Your list is really interesting though. Many established authors that I’ve never read or even heard of in some cases. The Gayl Jones is very interesting. I will have to look up some of these to see if the ones I haven’t heard of are things I want to read.
I don't envy the judges, so many good books floating about this year that it's almost inevitable they'll make a mistake and forget something. I don't really disagree with any of your suggestions, but I guessed my long list on paper just for fun and we only have 2 in common (Klara and the Sun and Open Water).
I would love to see “ The Chosen And The Beautiful” by Nghi Vo be nominated and win. It is stunning. “The Prophets” is also a stellar work. Reading this novel, it felt as if Toni Morrison has passed the torch and is smiling from Heaven.
I don't think the lenght of Open water will be a problem. The sense of an ending is pretty short and it won the prize (of course Barnes was an established author and not a debutant)
Omg Booker season already! Time is flying!
It is zipping by!
I thought the same thing! It feels like just a few months ago people were arguing about Shuggie Bain 😅
The joy of finding Eric has posted a new video on Sunday morning 🤩🤗👋☘️🍀😍📖📚
😊📚📚📚
Yay! I’ve been eagerly anticipating this video. I really hope Popisho is on the longlist. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time🤞🏽
Definitely!
Thanks for your longlist predictions, the best we have at the moment! As a wild and blind bet I'd put my money on Richard Powers at least being shortlisted (I think it might win).
I always look forward to your predictions, Eric! I’m adding some of these to my TBR now!
😊📚
Really enjoyed hearing your predictions! Looking forward to seeing which books are on the longlist and deciding which ones I fancy reading 😀
We'll find out in a few weeks time! 📚

It's definitely worth reading and entertaining!
The best time of year!!
You already have a copy of The Magician! I loved The Master, and it spurred a love of Henry James. Very looking forward to that one.
I'm so excited to read it!

The Performance by Claire Thomas
Interesting list!
Eric, I loved this!! Can't wait to make my predictions video 😍 Love your ideas. But dude, where's the Rooney??
Ah, I’m eager to hear your picks 📚 But, I don’t know, somehow I don’t reckon Rooney will make the list - though I’ve not read it yet like you.
@@EricKarlAnderson Interesting! A couple I'm thinking that you didn't mention are Transcendent Kingdom and The Women of Troy 👀
I could very well be wrong and it’d be great to see Sally on there. I’d also love it if Gyasi is listed!
I'd love it if Open Water was longlisted, such a gorgeous beautifully written book :)
Fingers on both hands crossed!
I'm excited to see what appears on the list and yes I agree let's hope some Aussie fiction makes it!!🤞❤️

Always more reading to get to! 📚📚📚
Richard Powers has a new novel!!?? Excited :) This is quite a different list from the ones I have seen in other places, and I am more excited for it.
I don't normally pick so many that haven't been published yet but I do think they have a good chance.
SO EXCITINGGG!!

I once predicted that the Twilight series would win the Booker. I heard it barely got edged out.
Very skilled, entertaining post.

The Magician and The Big Mistake bothy sound very interesting and hope they get there.

Exciting times!!!

curious to see what the one or two longlisted books absolutely nobody saw coming will be :-D
There are bound to be a couple or more!
Lovely predictions, Eric! I am also wondering if the new Sally Rooney would be on the list too. Have you read it yet? :)
I've not read it yet. It's possible Rooney might be listed but I don't think it's likely somehow.
I would love to see “ The Chosen And The Beautiful” by Nghi Vo be nominated and win. It is stunning. “The Prophets” is also a stellar work. Reading this novel, it felt as if Toni Morrison has passed the torch and is smiling from Heaven.
I've not come across Vo's book. Thanks for the suggestion.
The One Sky Day book is gorgeous
It's an amazing story!
Colm Tóibín “The Testament of Mary” 2012 was on 80 pages long, so there’s hope for “Open Water”
The only one I'd add, assuming it qualifies, is "The Octopus Man" by Jasper Gibson.
I still have to get to reading that so hope it is listed. 🙂
If the length of Lanny by Max Porter did not prevent it from being longlisted, I doubt Open Water will be affected by it as well.
That's true!
I don't think the lenght of Open water will be a problem. The sense of an ending is pretty short and it won the prize (of course Barnes was an established author and not a debutant)

3/13 ;)
Two books that I predict will be on the long list.
Snowflake
by Louise Nealon
Small Things Like These
by Claire Keegan.
I was just thinking this morning that I need to get a copy of Snowflake.
