      It is the case actually, life is horrible when youre blind its not because 1 guy out of 100 is happy being blind that it would be the case for everyone. If im going blind I really dont care at all that my neighbor is blind and happy, it wont make my life better. This guy on the video doesnt attach a lot of importance to sight maybe thats why hes happy but so far its not the case for everyone I wont ever be happy if I go blind one day and the fact that some are will never change a damn thing. Not being able to drive see movies playing video games and just be able to simple see without doing anything special have no cost.

    As someone that wishes they could travel to the US from the UK to meet up with my long loved close friend and persue my work internationally, but has been told that the blind don't recieve any assitance in air ports because it's not their responcability, by my own mother. This video may have just changed my entire life from this point onwards. Just watching someone with almost similer struggles as me go through such a difficult and worrying task of dealing with air ports, I feel much more confident and comfortable traveling over sees and exploring more. Thank you so so much for making this video Tommy... You have made a 21 year old blind musician very very happy.

      I can't imagine visually impaired people (or people with any kind of handicap) not being helped at places like airports or hotels. As far as I can tell, you can always call for assistance and you can usually let the airport and hotel personnel know if you need any kind of assistance even before you get there, so they can prepare to help you. Maybe these things improved over time. Not to talk bad about your mother, but maybe she just wanted you to be safe. Traveling is a bit of a hassle even if you can do everything by yourself.

      I know in UK airports there is definitely definitely loads of assistance for people with any disability. Phone the airport in advance, they'll definitely help you. They have people there who are employed just to help blind, deaf, etc.

So I don't understand why your mother said its not their responsibility. We take care of you!

    Have you ever been to Niagara falls? You should go on the Maid of the Mist boat ride that goes right up next to the falls. It's a really cool experience and I think you'd enjoy it. The water from the falls splashes up continuously and you get soaked. They give you plastic rain coats to help keep dry. When you get up close to the falls, the best way to describe it is that it's like it's raining 24/7/365.

    It actually amazes me how well he can get around. If you really think about it the way he gets around is so mentally challenging. He has to remember everything in his head. And if he doesn’t remember everything correctly then he’s lost. He’s forced himself to become an excellent problem solver. Everything he does is almost like a maze he has to traverse. His sense of direction is entirely in his head. Everything is in his head. And everything is so different. We use our eyes to remember things while he uses touch. If I were to close my eyes and touch things I would struggle to determine what they are. And even if I did guess correctly what those objects were I would still rely on my memory of what those objects look like. A object that he has never seen in his life but only touched. All of his knowledge of what things look like are what he’s touched and what he’s told. And even then everything is left up to his own interpretation. A world he can create within his mind. And that is truly amazing.

    Tommy you are such an inspiration to me. I am legally blind myself and honestly there are times it really just grabs me and pulls me down into a depression.... I’ve been like this my entire life but it’s not all too bad but sometimes it’s just hard. I found your videos in a very amazing way, There was a day I was just to the point of anger, I wanted to pray about my vision to God letting Him know how frustrated I was and how it made me feel. I did this with my abilities as a sketch artist by drawing a picture of a man held by this metal blindfold around his eyes bound by chains. Well anyway after this prayer I just had the want to go to RUclips and right there was your video channel. Just out of nowhere and by watching your vids I believe God is showing me a person, no matter their vision or whatever physical or mental obstacle they have, a person can live a happy life. Right now I work, attend a karate class, I’m trying to live as much as I can just like you. Thank you Tommy.... I hope so much someone reads my comment to you.

    I like the way you organise your travels. It's all so much more complicated than for a seeing person. Strangely, Travel-LOG does come from a tree. On the old sailing ships, the speed was measured by floating a log loosely tethered to a rope alongside the ship. From the time it took for the ship to clear the log you could then calculate the speed. The speed was measured at certain intervals and the results entered in the LOG book.

    great video! do you have to pay extra for assistance at the airport? how do you book your flights? do you have to let airports, airlines, hotels etc. know in advance that you'll be requiring assistance?

    • @nettlesoup
      @nettlesoup 7 лет назад +14

      Myisha Leigh The ground handlers doing the meet and assist at each port will generally bill the airline for the the costs of providing that service, but the airline spreads that cost out, so individuals requiring it don't (and shouldn't) have to pay extra for their ticket. Similarly, if I get seriously ill on a flight and the plane has to divert to the nearest big city airport, the airline covers it either directly or indirectly through their insurance and so the ticket price we all pay covers a service we might one day need.
      It is helpful to mention during booking any service requirements so that the ground handler can plan ahead the personnel and equipment they'll need for each departure. Technically you could leave it until check-in and they would still try and accommodate you but it messes with their staffing during busy periods and you'll probably be waiting at check-in longer than if you planned ahead. Cool fact is that a list of all the departing passengers with arrival needs, including what they need, is sent when the flight departs, so the arrival port can prepare staff to meet those passengers off the plane by name.

      Myisha Leigh my brother uses airport assistance. You don't have to pay more. You should call in advanced or note it during booking but it isn't necessary to do so you can request assistance at arrival. You may have to leave earlier for your flight for check in than someone without a handicap.

    I find that when I travel, sometimes I get too caught up in the act of taking photos and videos and the stress of "wanting to remember" that it becomes counterintuitive. The best way to make vivid memories is probably to take it all in and live in the moment. I'm sure you have some great memories without the distraction of feeling the need to visually document every little thing!

    • @Kaalyn_HOW
      @Kaalyn_HOW 7 лет назад +7

      It reads emoji's out loud, but not emoticons. If you have a mac, you can read all the names of emojis, and it says those names usually. Sometimes theyre pretty mis-matched from what *I'd* say thats an emoji of, but it's usually accurate. It doesn't however indicate that what its naming IS an emoji and just says it as if its part of the sentence, which an sometimes be confusing, lol heart heart revolving heart tears of joy

    A little lifehack. When you get your keycard, ask the frontdesk person to show you which way it is facing, so you can ask them to put a sticker in a certain corner. If they don't have anything, you can do it yourself. They make dots that stick on which you can buy, or you can just bring some stickers. Really, anything that will stick and is feelable will work in this situation.This saves you the hastle of going through that trial and error process every time you open your door.Another timesaver might be to simply put your card in your wallet or pocket knowing which way it is turned, so you know how to swipe it when youpull it out. IF you can remember which way it's facing every time you put it away, this should work just as well, but if you forget, you have to go through the same process.

      You never get sleepy when you close your eyes?

    • @martinc.720
      @martinc.720 7 лет назад +3

      You're completely missing the point. You said you would fall asleep "all the time". You're not tired "all the time". Neither are blind people. People who are not tired do not fall asleep. When you close your eyes, it's because you need some rest (ie you're tired). Some (we cannot make a statement including all blind people), so some blind people keep their eyes shut because the same muscles you and I use to open them do not work for them, as they have never used these muscles. They are not tired, they just cannot keep their eyes open. Others do it by choice, I believe, but again, it's not because they are tired so, no, they do not fall asleep. I don't know if this makes any sense to you, but I don't really how to explain it otherwise.

    When you were talking about the airplane flight, it got me curious. Do the flight attendants over the safety procedures one-on-one with you (like how to put on the oxygen mask, where the emergency exits are, etc) or is there a Braille version of the pamphlet thing that has all the safety information? Also I apparently forgot I subscribed to you way back when. I need to do a Tommy Edison marathon to atone for my mistake. Lol
