  • In this video we're going to go over a short history of Seven Marine, and why Volvo Penta acquired the company, and then killed it 3 years later. Other videos on the internet believe volvo's press release about environmentalism, or oddly blame politicians for some idiotic reason, but neither @Visioracer nor @LifeOffshore knows what they are talking about. This video explains the real reason that Volvo Penta pulled the plug on Seven Marine and their 627hp Supercharged V8 Outboards, and like usual, the answer is all about money, or lack of it.

    Something to add. Boat builders can squeeze a whole extra V12 on the same transom 7's were on. For example, a 42ft CC with 7's would be triples, V12's could do quads. Mercury made sure the minimum requirement for the outboards center to center (crankshaft to crankshaft) distance remained the same as their smaller engines. This allows boat builders to pack more power and that is what those customers want. An extra $80K is nothing to them haha.

    • @RelatableGarage
      @RelatableGarage Год назад +3

      It's not even 80k if you're saving 23k an engine. Then to go from 3 7's at 300k (100k each) to 4 mercs at $308k (77k each) its a no brainer. 8k more for 2400hp vs 1800ish plus parts network plus fuel efficiency

    Why did Volvo Penta get involved with Marine 7 in the first place? The engine power flow has to turn 90 degrees twice before it gets to the propeller creating more friction, more weight and less efficient. If I were a big boat owner looking to re-power, I would never get anywhere near this fringe flash in the pan concoction. Where will you get parts for this former brand. You would find it far easier to get parts for the former Evinrude / Johnson brand. Even for outboards they made in the 60s.

    Great transfer of info... nice work.
    I loved the concept of a horizontal 'auto' engine mounted onto a vertical drive shaft. I had believed that using an engine and controllers that any A.S.E. mechanic could wrench on, that could be diagnosed with a simple OBD port reader, and having parts availability as close as the nearest Chevy dealer were all huge benefits. I have to wonder if Seven held any patents that were sold to Volvo in the majority stake purchase. Otherwise, why didn't Volvo just duplicate the process and start manufacturing their own version of a "transaxle" which would be a direct fit to one of their own off-the-shelf (already in production) lower units?

  • @hermanosamuel8744

    I think you made a really insightful and compelling argument. I always find it amusing when people blame political figures (from either side), even when those political figures have nothing directly, or indirectly to do with the subject. They just like to blame their convenient boogey-man instead of bothering to research the whole matter. Secondly, and pretending for a moment that Volvo-Penta was making the decision for "environmental" reasons, that would still only be because their marketing department's research suggested it was more profitable (again, just pretending). It's like it never occurs to the opponents of such decisions that they may be out numbered and manufacturers want to produce what they can sell the most of. So, in that sense, it could easily be both reasons. It could very well be that in addition to being outclassed in the giant outboard segment, Volvo-Penta also realized that the rest of the market is moving the other way, and it wasn't worth fighting for just that segment. For example, it's no surprise that so many auto manufacturers already had EV's through R&D, and in the works long before any official legislation or policy changes. They saw what MORE (certainly not all, just more), folks wanted and were already getting ready.✌

    So when the large outboard powered boat market and large outboard demand was at its all time high the industry has ever seen. Volvo decided to drop Seven because a bigger competitor was supposed to be bringing out a competing outboard in 6 months? May be plausible but not highly plausible IMO. A time when pretty much all outboards were backordered over a year and dealer inventory was being sold before it even came to the dealership. I still think it was completely stupid to axe Seven when they did, even if Merc was coming out with the 600. They could have sold Sevens for awhile after the new Merc came out because the market was that hot for outboards. Even if Seven was not their first choice a lot of people ended up getting their second or third choice in outboards just because it was available.

      No profit in selling the 7. It was a bad business decision from the start. They had to have known that Merc was developing their new engine. Also, they should have known Merc would build it in-house. A little basic financial analysis would have told Volvo it was not a good idea to purchase the 7.

    • @sdvten
      @sdvten Год назад +2

      @@kokomo9764 What was their margin per outboard on the 627, since you talk like you know? A very large company like Volvo Penta doesn't buy a company without looking at the financials. There is something they wanted from Seven. I have no doubt VP probably knew about the Merc 600 a year or maybe more before it came out. That still doesn't change the fact that the industry was in a boom. They could have sold outboards through most of that boom. IMO VP dropping Seven was mostly due to several factors.

    Interesting outlook. Im a merc fan and didnt like the 7 Marine engines and i have never been a fan of Volvo either and one thing i seriously dont like are the IPS drives. My personal take on the points made in this video are, Volvo has a huge sales and service network globally, so servicing and repairs etc wouldnt be the issue, Lesser new brands have made their mark in recent yrs and are selling well with way less of a footprint Volvo has. They also have a huge industrial capacity so for them to licence or in time make up their own components while as improving the outboards over time would have been a better way to go and keep 7 marine going. I think they real reason they killed it was because unlike with the big 4 Merc, Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda up to a point, where they cant compete from a entrenched position that these brands have, I think they mostly saw a real threat coming from huge block outboards to their IPS drives and sought to kill off the one brand they could afford to kill off. I could be totally wrong on this point but its not completely far fetched.

The LS is also an amazing platform that would have allowed a huge aftermarket, you could have had 1200hp outboards easily. Imagine a single 1200hp instead of dual 600s? People do this all the time in aviation, and many get themselves killed. I’m all about advancing tech, but if it were so simple to cram a corvette engine into an aircraft vs a clunky old air cooled….I’m guessing it’d have been done long ago.
    I’m guessing this went the way of aircraft swaps…engines designed to rub one way (lugging along in overdrive) , vs another designed to run another way (100% in aircraft).
    The gear reductions in planes have been a big failure point.
    Now if these engines have been running reliably in the field with minimal warranty claims, then the Merc hypothesis sounds pretty good to me.

    The whole thing can be setup with a lower CG, or even put the gas motors in the front, how about a four I6's along the sides, totally frees up the packaging, which is the hard part of outboards.

    I'm going to have to disagree because 7 marine had a platform that you can expand the horsepower and torque without having to change too much. With a super charger pulley change and a tune you can add another 100 horsepower. With a cam change you can add another hundred horsepower. .. This was a big mistake. The aftermarket tuners would have turned this into a racing platform that no other company can Match..

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  Год назад

      Neither one of these engines is very well suited for racing. Boats need special high speed drives when you get up around 75mph; anything else and you just blow out the water before the prop can grab it. There is nothing like that available for the Seven Marine or the V12 Merc. They aren't race engines.

  • @garyradtke3252
    @garyradtke3252 Год назад +3

    Sounds plausible to me. As I understood it boat hauls and transoms had to be re engineered for 7 Marine. All of the adds I remember for them included Intrepid so I would assume they where their largest customer. Merc being cheaper and larger CI with 2 speed trans for low end torque may have set the stage for Intrepid. Volvo knows when to cut their losses. I am going to point to one other possibility. The possibility of upgrading to the V12 from other engines on more standard transoms would give Merc the advantage in that aspect also. That is if my assumptions and memory of the requirements are correct.

    • @ADDvanced

      I think time will show that all of these larger, heavier outboards will be placing too much strain on transoms, compared to inboards that are bolted along the horizontal surfaces., spearing the load. Weight distribution with multiple installations must be a real hull design challenge for architects. It’s notable that the class one racers are all staying onboard twins.
      These engines seem to have most appeal to the Miami quin ‘look at me’ open bow riders crowds.
      Although I do think that the new Verado 500r hits a sweet spots for sports boats in twin installations.

      Majority or Merc dealers are in US. Volvo are far better distributed and serviced globally. I am in Europe - Volvo, being Swedish, are for better represented for service both here and in APAC.
      Volvo also makes a very diverse range of marine engines beyond sterndrive installations - their breadth and depth of engineering exceed that of Mercury, who don't even manufacture but rebadge their entire 60hp range.
      Volvo Group (including trucks) turnover was $48 Bn last year and they have been in business since 1929.
      Brunswick Marine who own Mercury have a turnover of just $5.8 bn, Mercury contribute $26bn of that. They are therefore tiny in global terms, Volvo could buy them tomorrow.
      Lecture over 🙂To the point, the 7 Marine acquisition was a strike on the balance sheet for Volvo to enter the large outboard segment by acquistion. Trouble is that they really only acquired an integrator, since Seven only bough bits in with no intellectual property, and a flawed product.
