  • I found a radio off eBay and surprise, surprise! Is showed up dead. Lets take it apart and see what happened! Note, the ALINCO DJ-S11 and S41 seem to be prone to battery acid damage. Likely due to owner negligence. Its easy to take it clean off the terminals and get it back up and running in most cases.

I just found one of these in a bunch of radio stuff I just bought. Fortunately no batteries in mine...put some in and it fired up. Transmits fine (though not much power as I understand. Kind of a cool little radio. Now I just need to find a manual so I can figure out how to program it.

Just bought 2 of these at SeaPac. One worked fine the other had the same issue, leaky batteries. I took off the back washed out the battery compartment and polished the PCB battery contacts with tooth paste and that one works fine too.

There actually is an inductor in the antenna circuit so the mismatch is maybe not as bad as you think. I raised a repeater here in Newport Oregon at about 10 miles and i'm pleased with this toy. I probably will make an antenna adapter so i fold down the built in antenna and use a J Pole. I need to snip the resistor so i can pick up local Coast Guard and police. Thanks for the video.

Crazy thing. I’ve been looking for one of these. I remember a family friend had one when I was a kid and it was the first radio I was ever introduced to

I bought a DJ S41 (70cm) many years ago at a swap for (if I recall) $20. Still works perfectly to this day. I have keyed up repeaters from atop a mountain to the plains (Fort Collins to Greeley -about 14 miles) on it's puny 340 mW output.
Expaned the range easily, and had to physically stretch the VCO coil to get the PLL to lock in the extra frequency range I wanted.

@@krevo81 Remove the old setup and solder in the Female SMA connector. Start by taking it apart and looking at what is there. You may have to drill the case. It's been at least 15 or more years since I had mine.

I just sold one of these on eBay about a month and a half ago... Didn't expect to see one on here.
There's a 70cm version of this as well.
Both versions are rated at 340mW high power and 50mW low power, IIRC.
(FWIW, the one in the video is NOT the one I sold...)

White vinegar is perfect to clean and neutralize battery acid

+1 for white vinegar. Let it sit for a while and a lot of that acid residue will dissolve away.

I think you meant to say use baking soda, vinegar is acidic you need an alkaline to neutralize the acid from the battery.

I have 2 that I bought for bag radios while my wife and I were geocaching. LOVE THEM! I i did have a battery leakage issue on one but fixed it and returned it to service. As we no longer geocache, they sit at my computer as spare bad weather radios.

Ever since the battery manufacturers removed the MERCURY from alkaline batteries they have become killers of more electronics. No MERCURY = big time leaky batteries.

@Ham Radio Crash Course - I plucked that 0 ohm jumper off my board with some needlenose tweezers and even after holding the F key and powering on, I'm not able to go beyond 147.999. Any ideas?

Could possibly use a USB charger to power it. Just be mindful of polarity, and make sure it's amp out put is higher than what the radio will draw.

USB was not around when those came out. At least not for Amateur Radio. It has a DC barrel plug for power as I recall.

More likely than the previous owner using the 5V input is that he knew it was crap and lied about it. As much as I love ham radio and most of the people, hams are some of the cheapest people I know. Dude probably bought it used and wanted to get as much as he paid for it 10 years later.

Hey Josh, I have several of these as well as the 440 version and they do work ok but are only about 300mw output. They are great for hamfests. However, if you can find one, get an Icom IC-Q7a. Nice little pocket rig, dual band and runs on 2 AA batteries. It is also a great scanner with reception up to 1300mhz cell blocked. It can be transmit unlocked in similar fashion as the Alinco. Not a powerhouse either with about 300mw out like the Alinco. Usually can be found on Ebay for under $100.
