Thanks for the lecture Rabbi! I thought this tradition of asking permission to eat for different categories of food could go back to Moses, but it probably goes back to referencing the Garden. Adam and Eve were granted permission to feed from whichever they desired from the Garden (except one thing) and of course God can grant this permission because creation belongs to him. In the same manner due to his authority over creation, God gave Adam the responsability to cathegorize creation. But in our current fallen state, we descendents of Adam cannot just take God's permission for granted anymore or at least we should not. Therefore, we ask for his permission everytime we are about to eat, yet as a callback to the time of Adam we do it by asking for permission for every different cathegory of food we are about to it. This is not only a way to honor God but also to acknowledge on our part our fallen state.
    Pride is a tough enemy.

Great perspective, the actual Jewish obligation of blessing before eating goes back to the second temple period. Blessing after eating is clearly mentioned in the Bible. It is definitely possible people did this prior. We don't actually ask permission we offer thanks acknowledging that all comes from the Almighty.
