  • German autobahn is the best highway system in the world. even though it has no speed limit, it still manages to get fewer accidents than us highways which generally have a 55-mile speed limit.
The no-speed limit allows people to fly by at any speed and reach their destination in half the time.
the reason for its success is not the no speed limit but the people. the people of Germany follow lane regulations and every other rule associated with the autobahn.
the autobahn has proved a great contributor to the economy and is less likely will lose its no-speed title ever.

Yes, there is no general speed limit and the 130 km/h are only advisory ... but what Germans also often forget: when you have driven faster than 130 km/h and you have been involved in an accident, you can get a "Teilschuld" (proportional guilty) for the accident even if you followed all rules only because of your high speed. To not be proportional guilty (with all the legal consequences) you have to prove, that the accident even would have happened, when you had driven less than 130 km/h. But that almost never happens.

Also don't forget that all vehicles in Germany must pass a safety inspection (TÜV) every 2 years.

I guess in most developted countries it is also required.
In Ireland the inspection is done every two years, then annually after the car´s 10th anniversary.

Useful ino. Thanks. Germans are still the best in automobiles. One's driving speed is inversely proportional to one's age, generally. Anywhere in the World. Averages vary among nations. 3 factors affecting a Great drive: Road quality, Driving Skills and Car Quality.

More than half of the fatalities occured on RURAL & SUBURBAN ROADS, not on the AUTOBAHN. Let that sink in.

I bet if you parse the fatalities to more particular circumstances I bet the most lethal roads in the US are the busy suburban roads lined with businesses, a.k.a. "stroads". So many horrible accidents at the traffic lights!

A few things are worthy of mention here. The United States has a poor road safety record, and the fact that Germany's is better does not really say much. International institutions such as the European Union, the World Health Organisation, the European Transport Safety Council and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development have published accident and fatality research which covers most of the world. Much of this is ongoing and is updated frequently, using metrics which eliminate potential biases from factors such as network lengths and population sizes, making it suitable for country-to-country comparisons.
What is significant is that although they use different methodologies and datasets, they all agree that Germany's overall road safety performance is firmly in the middle of the pack - nowhere near the top. This has even been acknowledged by the DVR (Deutscher Verkehrssicherheitsrat, Germany's own road safety executive).
The story is more favourable when comparing the freeway systems: the Autobahn's safety figures are indeed better than most countries, but consistently worse than others, including (but not limited to) Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Interestingly, the United Kingdom is also one of these. This is surprising because the vast majority of British drivers have never been taught to use this type of road, since learners were banned from them until 2018, and post-test lessons have never been mandatory.
Your conviction that the Autobahn is the best highway system in the world is undoubtedly sincere, but I'm afraid it is not supported by evidence. Germany has some of the world's best-maintained roads and vehicles, and her attitude towards driver training is exemplary. With everything stacked in her favour, you would expect her road safety credentials to be head and shoulders above everyone else, but whether we are talking about all road types or motorways in particular, they simply aren't. Something is clearly very wrong when highly-trained German drivers cannot match the standards of a country whose expressway users are nearly all self-taught, so either they are not as good as they are cracked-up to be, or there is something so dangerous about the Autobahn that it effectively cancels out the benefits of their training.
There is only one major difference between the Autobahn and the British motorway, so suspicion has to fall on the use of the unrestricted sections; and since implementation of speed limits has always had a postitive outcome on Autobahn fatalities, then a nationwide limit must be a prime candidate for improvement.
I do not agree that the Autobahn will keep its limit-free status forever. There is already a large corpus of German public opinion that favours a national speed limit, and as successive generations become more safety-conscious and climate-aware, it can only grow. The DVR has been calling for a 130 kph limit for decades, and now even ADAC does not object to one in principle. _Pace_ my friend, but evidence is strong that the days of unrestricted German motorways are numbered; their supporters may have the upper hand at the moment, but their position is weakening at a steady rate, and the status quo is most definitely not assured.

However - what do you mean when you say "best". Safety wise, it is a very good system. It could be even better. Otoh, I always found it a pain to travel fast in the UK by car; I lived there for some time. I prefer my Autobahn. I hope that it will remain speed limitless for the foreseable future. I don't think an empty Autobahn should be restricted.

The speed limits in most of the European countries are shrinking because of the fomo around climate change. Electrical and petrol cars are preferred over the diesel ones, because of the climate and their carbon footprint. But their efficient cruising speeds don’t comply with diesel cars. The classy diesel 2liters have their most efficient speed/oil used ratio at around 140km/h, most electric and petrol cars have it around 90-100km/h. However, if carbon less fuels beat the electrical nonsense, EU is pushing all of us into, I doubt there will be a speed restriction any time soon. And if you want to see the real climate problem, look no further than towards the great China or India, those are the real carbon footprint giants. But in comparison to us no one cares about it over there.

You're telling this to an american, who's never seen or knows the true top speed of the vehicle. Of course I'm going to take my car to the autobahn, and see it's true speed before it red lines. I think the speed gauge on my car is lying, and it can't get close. I want to prove it otherwise, without getting a criminal speeding ticket.

There is no common sense in driving in America... example if you car is piece of junk you wouldn't drive faster than 55 mph... fatalities are caused by stupidity

  • @Train_Nerd

This video romanticize the Autobahn. The main disadvantage is the big speed difference between 50mph/80 km/h trucks and up to 125 mph/200 km/h fast cars. So at 80 mph/130 km/h you either got stuck behind a truck, or drive always on the left lane.
Driving with speedlimit is much more comfortable than those constant stresful racing situation on the autobahn.

    • @richardsvr9586
      @richardsvr9586 4 месяца назад

I think the speed limits for trucks should've been atleast 100 km/h with the limiter set to 105 km/h (65 mph). This prevents slower traffic like who want to drive slowly or people towing caravans, trailers have to overtake trucks everytime, causing to disrupt the left and middle lanes.

Five reasons why US highways are so bad compared to the German autobahnen:
    1. Poor construction
    2. No maintenance
    3. Arbitrary law enforcement or none at all
    4. Wicked bad driver training
    5. EVERYBODY HAS TO DRIVE!
P.S. The word "autobahn" literally means "autoroute" or "motorway".
