I have a John Smoltz story. It was approx 1998 give or take a year. My girlfriend and I are staying at the Nassau Beach Hotel next to Marriot. The Marriot had a at the time a big sports gambling lounge. Had a small theatre seating area. I go in to gamble on some games around noon. The place is quiet and near empty. I look over and I recognize John. I hated the Braves as I’m from Toronto. I went over to him politely and hey good morning John. The guy was so nice. We sat there handicapping some games, had a couple beers I believe. Spent maybe an hour just talking like 2 lads. Probably not an exciting story to many but I remember it so vividly because he was just a regular guy. Cheers
John, you’re one of the three greats. I was coaching my two boys in Little League during those great years in the early 90’s. We all loved you and the team, Bobby, Leo and the organization. I got to see him pitch vs. Mets @ last year of Shea Stadium in 2008. Was in Cooperstown for his HOF induction, amazing to be starter then relief pitcher, be great at both.
John is so lucky to have lived such a charmed life. This type of story really makes you wonder about the purpose of the universe. When some people get to have seemingly almost perfect lives and others must live lives that are complete shit.

Got to see him pitch iny first attended Major League Baseball game. Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets. Fortunate enough to see him many times play in person and he is the reason i ALWAYS wore #29 in high and college baseball. He ALSO was one of the greatest closers of all time. I believe, if im correct about this, he is only player to have 250 plus wins and 250 plus saves. Thank you Smoltzy for the great memories and being and Atlanta Brave! GO BRAVES!!
One of my first memories at Turner Field was watching Smoltzy close a really close game on a really good Cardinals team. My Dad went crazy out of his seat next to me. One of my fondest memories of my Dad actually.

Always wanted to know what McCarver had against my Pirates. Anyway, i think John talks too much these days when he's broadcasting. But i have no ill-feelings now. No more nightmares. Joe delivers yet another fantastic interview.

On March 8 I picked up my new Boxer pup. When my wife and I came in there was another couple there getting theirs, it was John Smoltz and his wife. We had no idea who he was 😂 very nice Christian couple. Guess I should have followed baseball more. 🙄
The last place Braves had a new GM by the name.of John Schueeholz.. JS had an incredible eye for talent & was shrewd deal maker. JS traded an old broke down P named.Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for John Smoltz. Shortly after, Bobby Cox leaves the front office to manage the club. Along came Glavine, Maddux & Avery to form the greatest rotation in MLB history. What a remarkable run.
You are right. But that old, broke down Doyle Alexander won like 7 straight in August and September to squeak the tigers into the AL Pennant. Only to lose it. Almost felt like a deal with the devil. Lol. I was a senior in High School in Central Michigan when they made that trade. Broke my heart. Loved Smoltzy. Home town hero.
A good pitcher who went into the HOF based on being a Brave and a likeable broadcaster. If you're a really good number 3 pitcher in the rotation, you rarely face the other teams Ace pitcher. Like Deion Sanders said about the footbally hall of fame their should be a top tier, and upper room of HOFamers. Smoltz was not on a level of his peers.....Pedro, Randy Johnson, Clemens, Maddux, Glavine or Schilling for that matter. And of the current crop sure fire HOFamers, he's below Verlander, Scherzer and Kershaw.
First chipper was a child. 2nd Justice .279 ba, Lopez .289 ba, Klesko .279 ba, Grissom .272 ba. Not a great hitter in the bunch. A lot of decent hitters but they never had The Man on the offense

I remember as a Cards fan, for some reason they always had no issues with Maddux but Smoltz shut their lineups down. He is a gamer.
