You can do it! It does take practice. Janome just came out with 3 machines with a stitch regulator for free motion quilting if that's something you'd be interested in. I don't use one, but beginners find it helpful.
Cool! i quilt, " You are blessed", "You are loved", "You can do all things!" etc on the quilts I make. I usually do a meander so it's easy to write as I quilt.

What is the difference between the closed and open toe foot. The manual isn’t clear. Thanks!
Mainly just visibility, but also the open toe isn't a good choice when there is fullness, applique, or embellishments.
