I was volunteered to be the tech guy at an event for my community (because they assume that I know this stuff by default by virtue of being a Millennial lol). This looks very similar to the set up I will be using. You just saved saved the day, sir! Much appreciated!
Excellent instructional video. I just happened to have a Yamaha MG10. You made it very simple for a newbie like me to feel comfortable setting up a small PA system. Following your easy setup will ensure that I will not damage my PA system while getting great performance. Could not be happier to have found your video.
Thank you very much for this informative video. Great for a notice (like me). Explains how to avoid problems and troubleshoot common problems (i.e. feedback, power issues, order for running cables, powering up, as well as emphasizing best practices that are often cut short). I learned a lot!
Wow, Jordan you look completely different three years ago.. 😂 I can tell you learned a great about making RUclips videos and delivery and presentation. But your information is still top-notch and useful thank you.
@@kettnercreative I am DJ-ING my son's Prom July 25th. The venue has the ION Total Max speakers, and I was told all I need is a phone or an I-pad to DJ there. That being said I use to DJ 25 years ago! So Do I really need a mixer or can I just run straight from these speakers, as they have two. Music through one and mice in another???
@@richardpizzahut08 I wouldn't recommend running music in one and the mic in the other. You'll be much better with the even coverage from having both sources come from both speakers.
I know this is a way late post, but I normally set up the mixer first to normalize everything and put on some music to establish unity gain sound levels. After the mixer is set with music playing, I add the main amp/speakers and set the volume all the way low, then bring it up to your performance level for the event remembering a room full of people will need more volume. If your mixer has an output EQ, this can be used to adjust for the room. Now when adding mics, etc, the cue/PFL,SOLO, or other name for channel monitor, they can be adjusted to nominal in the sound check so when they are sent live to the main, there are no surprises and people running for the exits as performance volume was defined before the event. Run the mixer at nominal VU levels regardless of the event size. Adjust the amp/speakers for the event size before the event starts. It is really amateur to turn on a mic and have the level horribly adjusted. Use the Pre Fade Listen, Solo, CUE or what ever it is call on your board to set the mic channel before the guest speaker uses it. Music is better than "Test, Test, Test". A mic pre cued and trimmed will just work. Checking computer levels, CD, DVD, Mics, etc are always best checked first with meters and headphones before going live on mains.
I have been having problems only getting the right side speakers to play on a stereo song. (I wish it was all mono) I've tried plugging L in one and R in another. If I had a XLR splitter into 1 L or 1 R would that solve it?
If I've using a stereo audio mixer that has 2 main outs (L and R), how does that change things with my speaker setup? Does it matter which one I use if I'm doing everything else the same as in this tutorial?
Great video. However, I have a question. I have the MG10XU and want to separate the volume controls between the PA speakers and subwoofers. Is it possible to plug in both subs to the Monitor out or do you suggest using a splitter then plug the subs in the FX Send?
Thanks for explaining the process simply, how would you go at linking a 2nd speaker to this first speaker so I would have 2 working? I understand they all need their own power cord, but I am not sure about inputs and outputs, or if I would need a Male to Male XLR cable, instead of a female to male XLR. Help please haha
Run the Powered speaker out of an auxiliary output on the amplified Desk (DON'T CONNECT IT TO THE POWERED MAIN OUTPUTS) and then connect the passive speaker to the normal powered outputs. Hope that helps!
Hi, thanks for sharing this amazing video. Can you please ( or anyone here) show me how to setup my PRX 812W speakers to the PRX715 powered Sub to the MW12C Yamaha Mixer. I do have the DBX EQ and the DBX drive rack and also the Lexicon. I am so greatly thankful for your help in advance.👍🏻👌
Hi Mate. Can you pls help me in setting of DB and Volume of the these speakers.. which should be above.. Volume or DB? I do volume gain at 12o’clock and DB at 4-5? It gives feed back to the microphone.. should it be at low volume and DB at 10? Thanks
Within about 10 mins into my setup, I’m getting a flatline sound coming out of my pa speakers. I don’t have a mixer, I just run pighog cables straight to the controller. What could cause that flatline sound?
This is dependent on a lot of different variables. Generally while busking you would just have a speaker on either side of you fanned 30-45 degrees to the outside.
I understand there's differences between speaker cables vs instrument cables. I have a Yamaha Arranger Tyros kb. What cable should I use in these setups? - kb > power speaker - kb > mixer > power speaker
Informative video...but little bit disappointing that the subtitles are reflecting on the YAMAHA MG10XU that spoiled the whole idea. Please be remember for future.
need bass sound on these will this sound good in small hall with high ceilings. I got two Samson Expedition old speakers need to do a small halloween party 150 ppl any recommendations for setup. Need the bass to hit hard. One subwoofer or two for small budget. I have the Rane one what wires would I need??
Good Day! I just want to ask if you connect the audio mixer to a active speaker what should be the maximum length of wire I will use to avoid some signal problems?
If you need to go further than 100 feet there are other options but generally for smaller scales and DJs they will not need more than 100feet, that is more for your music festivals and general music events where they then use cables Called cat5 typically however people have been known to use other types of cable
IM struggling to find the info I’m looking for? I have 2 215 peavey speakers run off one amp and want to add a peavey 118 sub. Can I power all 3 with my amp or do I need an additional amp or have to fork up the cash for a powered sub. Thanks for what you do and hope you can help.
If I were running karaoke from my laptop would I need an amplifier if I had that sound board and powered speakers? And what kind of wireless mic would you recommend for that scenario. I have a large room and it’s for my own personal amusement, not a professional kJ but I want it to sound better than good.
Most mid to high range mixers already include a USB interface. if not, it is possible to use mic line in or a TRRS cable if your laptop's only got one audio jack
You're suppose to set the volume starting from input level (gain), to channel level, to master level, to speaker input level in that order to make sure you have the best signal to noise ratio.
I'm not sure that you're correct. By starting with the speaker level at zero, then setting the master at zero, then setting the channel at zero, it make sure that you're not introducing more gain than necessary, thus reducing as much noise as possible. The goal is always (95% of cases) to have the speakers (if they're self powered), mixer, and channel all at zero (unity), then introduce the minimum amount of gain possible to achieve the desired result. This is what I attempted to demonstrate in the video.
But does one box speaker like this, I have a 12" Lansing work ok for a karaoke scenario? Is it possible to incorporate a Samsung sound bar and the subwoofer that it supports with the one 12" using a mixer? The won't connect to each other but after seeing this I'm thinking w a mixer it would work...any advise would be appreciated....
Thank you. Just a question: when you have XLR out to only one speaker and the input sound is in stereo, which side should you connect the XLR out to speaker to on the mixer? Thanks.

I have two different pairs of active speakers, one is the Kali in 8 and the other is the Edifier s3000pro. One have xlr balance inputs the other have RCA. Ok the question is. Can I use a mixer to connect both pairs at once so the same audio plays in all the speakers? For example TV audio or streaming devices or also a turn table. If so can you recommend a mixer for me that sounds well and don't break the bank? I thank you in advance and send my respect from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷😎✌️. Be safe.
What I need to know is how to connect my echo/reverb pedal to my powered mixer. Plugging my guitar into the "in" of my pedal and then from the "out" of the pedal to my powered speaker "in" creates a feedback loop.
