- This week's episode of Make it Kustom UNLEASHED takes us to Manitoba, where I join Brent from Halfass Kustoms and my brother Ben to explore the legendary VaVaVoom's EPIC junkyard. The adrenaline of rummaging through treasures is only matched by our anticipation as Ben and I embark on a road trip back to BC in a 1951 Mercury Monarch that I picked up in the parries.

Loving this new channel, looking forward to seeing more of your adventures! 👍
Roadside repairs, love it. Brings back old memories. Great video.
You and Brent would make pair that would be hard to beat if you built something together , seemingly two really good people doing really cool stuff , keep on keeping on .
They have built things together and Karl helped get Brent set up after the garage fire. Check out his older vids.
He’ll be out here shortly and will finish the ramp truck together!
super cool junk yard ! Glad you made it home with you and car in one piece..!
Great video !!
Just wanted to let you know a lot of times that short with the headlights is in the dimmer switch ! If it still has the dimmer switch on the floor . 😊
Nicely done. Was wonder when a video was going be made about this car and trip. That makes a deadly cruzer. Want to do a fly out west and drive home again. Did it back in 99. Have so many cool memories of that trip. So any plans for the merc?
Tony, we are shipping your hammer ASAP! Just need your phone number. Sorry it took so long. You definitely got to come out west you have a place to stay in the shop to work if you want to stay for a while!
Really enjoying the new channel.
I have an ls 51 chevy pickup. vacumn wipers. Good stuff. I'm wisconsin usa
Great channel
Nothing like a road trip in a classic
Love the new channel. Love the intro.
Gotta love a good old road trip!!!…cheers
Thanks for the adventure 😀👍
Very KOOL Road Trip Karl and Benny
Good episode.
But come on Karl.. That was "only" about half way across the country. ;)
Next time make it to Fitzees ;)
you guys are lucky in the west finding old cars.....just hardly possible here in nova scotia, really like your channel guys!!!!
Worst is trying to pass tractor trailers in a hurry, in heavy rain, when vacuum wipers stall! Deluge! 68 Rambler Rogue.
I added headlight relays so the deteriorated relay in the dash headlight switch only turns those relays on. Yes it's terrifying to have the headlights go out at speed in the dark. Temporarily I bought fog lamps and wired them to go on...
Loving the new channel Karl ! I was wondering about you driving the Merc home , is it your new daily ?
Not my new daily, but planning on some road trips in it
That more door needs the lid lowered and needs 2 less doors,I think you got that covered though lol.
Cool place!👏 where was that you mentioned?
If it hadn't been for the occasional Canadian flag, I would have sworn you were driving through West Texas... then you got to Banff. Man, that has to be the most beautiful place on Earth!
Banff is beautiful!!! Lol the prairies don’t have much to look at
Neat car, scenery reminds me of back home in NZ.
Awesome
4.54 liters per imperial gallon, 55.6/4.54=12.25, 251/12.25= 20.49 miles per gallon, your converting to American gallons.
Those old cars are aerodynamic and coupled with that modern drive doesn’t suprise me on the mileage
$2.30 per litre here in OZ.
$2.81 per litre ish in NZ for 91 $3.14 per litre for 98
Where I live in upstate New York 3.25 per gallon
We want more we want more 🤣
Plenty more coming!
Dimmer switch… can cause intermittent lights. I had that happen on my 74 nova hatchback, it was terrifying.
Yeah, that used to happen alot. That's why, back in the day floor mounted headlight dimmer switches were stocked & sold in every gas station & hardware store. All vehicles used the same one, so that was the handy part.
Yeah, I think you’re right it could be that it’s just so random when it happens
51 mercury..what my dad's dreamcar was.
He wanted one badly.
great story, what was the rear end ratio of the Merc?
Wish i could like this vid more then once
good job
Guys ..Canada has 4.5 litres to the gallon . 3.89 litres is to the American gallon.
Ya but why? All mpg is using US gallons. Canada uses litres per 100kms lol if I did mileage per Canadian gallon I’d have nothing to compare it to?
@@MakeItKustomUNLEASHED
Because the Canadian imperial gallon is what you purchase at the pump when it read 4.5 litres and it is bigger than the us counter part .
I don’t get the last part of your question ?
If I (in Canada ) told you my Colorado got 28 miles per gallon (a common term of reference using the imperial gallon/mileage system )and some would ask “yeah but what’s that in litres per hundred?” I would be correct in saying 10 L per hundred.
If I were in United States and someone asked me what the fuel mileage was I would tell him 24 miles per (US) gallon. That would also be correct.
But hey I really don’t care and I still love your channel and your work is impeccable. I like that international too. I had a ‘57 ..That was purchased in Manitoba correct.
I think you have matured to CANHANDS well done
I´m with a vortec S10 in my garage, nobody knows to handle it, very rare in brazil. have to I make it run for my client.
✊✊from Uk 🇬🇧
👍
Use 3.78 to divide litres into US gallons. Why 3.89?
If you want to convert to Imperial gallons, use 4.55.
Except for the steering issues, I think I'd leave that car the way it is cause it shows it's age..It doesn't look like it's even been painted since 1951..I haven't really seen much of the interior but what I'm seeing doesn't look to bad..I've always been into 4door vehicle's and that's another thing I like about it cause passenger's can get in and out easier
I washed it with my pressure washer and a half the paint came off. Lol.
I love the car the way it is it drives super good I just want to finish up a few things like Rubber’s and seals, etc.
Are u calculating fuel mileage off US gallons at 3.8 or whatever u said? That's 4.54 litres if you're Canadian so you're mileage is less.
Ya but why? All mpg is using US gallons. Canada uses litres per 100kms lol if I did mileage per Canadian gallon I’d have nothing to compare it to?
where's all the snow?
Canada is not all igloos and snow lol but yeah, this year was a bit warm
@@MakeItKustomUNLEASHED i just figured it was filmed earlier, i follow halfass customs as well and all his recent content has his place covered in that crappy white stuff. 🌨
How difficult is the no fun party of BC gonna make it to pass vehicle inspection and register?
Lol there’s so many ways around that. I have nothing but fun and I CBC won’t get me down.
@@MakeItKustomUNLEASHED maybe you can help a guy out then, ive got a pre 1960 vehicle with no registration in bc what can a guy do?😬
Crappy Tire and Timmies. Canadiana and old cars. Dosen’t get any better.
Yeah, just about is Canadian as it gets
You lost me when you opened the hood of the Monarch
Ha ha definitely can’t take a 1951 flathead from Manitoba to BC doing 120
Make It Kustom UNLEADED ?
I fell in love with that Monarch when Brent was building it and always referred to it in the comments as MY Monarch or MY car, because it just has the stance, the looks, the interior and the engine that would be MY own pick for a Custom ride. That big chrome face and the big old slab sides with the swage line and stainless moulding and then to the minimalist - but perfect - rear end.....MAN, that's one great looking beast. Wish I'd known he was thinking of moving it on...so you fellas take care of the old girl, won't you! Look after her and she'll always bring you home. Her current niggles (the broken hood release wire and the wiring gremlin) are just her testing to see what you'll do about them....and how quickly you get on and sort 'em. As much as old cars have character, they also have moods, so be sure to stay on her good side or she'll stop on you when you least want her to. (Well, that's how it appears to me at least with my own classics!) On a serious note, I can't think of a better owner than one who understands the Kustom lifestyle and loves what it is, so she's definitely in good hands. Gonna miss it on Brent's channel, so I guess I'll have to subscribe to yours if I want to keep up with where she is! Haha.....(but I have indeed subscribed). All the best from down here in New Zealand.
It's too bad Canada is so large and you guys are so far apart (it's a great friendship and collaboration)! Glad the Merc is going to a good home (it's like staying in the family). Thanks Karl!
We are only a couple our plane right away! But yeah driving is super far
55.6L divide by 3.785 = 14.69 us gallons. 251 miles divide by 14.69 us gallons give you 17.1 miles per us gallon. Just a bit less.
.83 Canadian gallons equals 1 us gallon
One us gallon in 3.785 litres.
I drove across Canada this past summer and my car gets around 30 mpg and it cost a fortune for gas. Need a car that gets 50 mpg would be nice ☺️
Yup. Confusing with US gallon, and Imperial gallon. Many get conversion wrong. Lites per 100km is easiest way to compute.
1 Canadian gallon is 4.54 litres
New channel is awesome! Can't wait to see what adventures are next! Go Japhands, keep moving forward!
I remember similar journeys across the Uk in the late 1980's. We were on vintage Vespas and Lambrettas, heading to seaside resort hundreds of miles away to get blind drunk for a weekend, though.
I remember the build series on that Merc. That's crazy good mileage for big heavy Merc. Almost makes think about putting an LS in my 49 Pontiac. Almost lol. Great video Karl.
What a coincidence my brother is putting an LS in his 49 Pontiac also
Good to see that the Merc went to a good home.
Awesome. This new channel is going to rock... Billy J. Queensland, Australia.
Sprint Car steering Box......still use them today
This one was a pretty hacked up job. Not like the nice sprint car steering boxes we all want to know hot rods for Cowl steer.
Kool channel !! Salutions from Brasil !!
Like the new channel...loved the old junkyard.....vacuum wipers suck....literally....
Just made the same trip last September ....... Manitoba to Vancouver and back to Manitoba.
Wow 20 mpg
24 miles per gallon, man you talking about all steel chassis and body! Approx. then add you two and luggage, 3515 lbs | 1594.377 kg
Unreal gas mileage for such a big heavy car with a giant motor
Love the old Mercs. Good mileage on the prairies is always mis-leading.....unless you live there!! Beautiful scenery. Who needs to turn on the prairies....you just go straight. I'm in the Barrie area of Ontario and it takes me 20 hours just to get out of Ontario going west. Looks like you had a good trip. Remember watching the LS conversion and look forward to more of the old Merc. Be safe and stay well.
Love this episode!
I didn’t remember those fancy gages on the Merc. This should be a fun channel! Any plans for the car?
7:38 Only in Canada would you be calculating miles per liter
Awesome best wishes from Columbus Ohio USA
I think $1.59 a liter is $6.04 a gallon.
Long drive. Good testament to Brent’s build and the LS driveline. A couple minor snags. Building my Studebaker to drive to alberta this spring. Should be fun.
Yeah, super minor. Brent makes drivers!
I have a friend in Sask and another in Alberta that have honey holes very similar.
That boneyard is that in Manitoba or where is that place located?
and the speedo was in Kmh. Other than correcting the math it was a g great video.
Ah theres 4.5 liters to an imperial galon. Us gallons are less😂
Cool looking ride! Would be nice to see a little introduction about it. Today I learned to carry a flashlight if the headlights fail. Great content both of you!
Thanks for the idea!
You have to love the Saskatchewan..
This had to have been back in Septmeberish.
3.785 liters to a us gal 4.54 liters to a sae gal.
I haul old vehicles from Bills all the time.
1 CAD gallon = 4.54609 litre. You better check your mileage again.
Ya but why? All mpg is using US gallons. Canada uses litres per 100kms lol if I did mileage per Canadian gallon I’d have nothing to compare it to?
Great vid. 🤜🤛
Just subbed and looking forward to more cool vids!!!!
Cool ride👍
So Bennys not a buddy then !
👍"It is 106 miles to..."
Great video and neat Mercury!
Ah man! Woulda been cool to meet you when you were in Brandon! I coulda hooked you up with tools!
Dang man!
way to go Brent !!!
lol cool new channel
Heck yeah! 🎉
really nice cruiser
like 1.3 K !
Buying and owning the merc is cool, but road tripping down the open road will be the coolest thing about it.
Always loved Brent’s Monarch, very cool good luck with it👍🏻
You're giving me flashbacks here!!! I remember these cars from when I was just more than a toddler!!
Excellent video :) and did super also for grease gun should get grease pin so push grease in rubber on metal and help lots ! Canadian Tire or NAPA sell them in small and big pins one they help lots on steering and suspension parts that rubber boots !
Do the tail lights go out with the head lights? If not, check the dimmer switch. Those old Fords with the foot operated dimmer switch on the floor had a habit of doing that. Spray some silicon spray up between the top lid on the switch and the case so the spray lube gets inside. Tricky to do but bend that little red straw that comes with the spray lube and you're good for another year or so.
The price of gas is interesting to know….. it’s really expensive in some parts of the world.
kool!
24 miles per gallon, at what speed?
110kmh or 70mph ishhh
Great memories, that's what road trips are, allways interesting..tks guys for taking us along
Looks like a Great Road Trip with your Brother!
