- We flew to Minnesota to record the unearthing of a an original-paint, 1967 SS 396 Camaro (375-horsepower L78 - one of 1138 built)) that the owner stored in his pole barn in Wisconsin in 1975. He is finally going to sell.

My dad bought a 1970 mach 1 when he was 17 now in his 60's it sat for 35 years in a garage im 19 now and glad he didnt sell it im fixing it up currently.
I'd love to see the follow-up video of these Barn Finds after completion and restoration. So many of these Barn Finds just end with the tow away!
Yeah me too updates...😊😊😊😊😊
Cars were pretty standard by 1971. Insurance co and has crisis killed the sport and by late 70s end was near..all auto makers detuned or just abandoned hi po cars called the malaise. Era of performance
I always wish I was around in 60s when those real cars were avaialble brand new.. Love American muscle cars beyond any other vehicle..
they wore out at 100,000 miles because of the lead in the gas. No maintenance to transmissions. Cars were rarely repainted, interiors were almost never reupholstered.
@@harryjones2420 but they are still around today
I remember when they first came out !!🤪
I was 15 in 1977 all these cars were 10 years old and this is what was for sale and affordable for a 16 year old after mowing lawns sense I could walk lol chevelles , camaro , 5 window trucks etc all beat to shit with no looking back
They were still a new model when I started in collision work in 1968
Absolutely freaking beautiful survivor. All 5 matching rally wheels, all them factory parts for such a rare car.... this has the wow, wow, wow factor.
Hey, remaining matching numbers 1967 L-78 Camaro"s are more rare than the 602 Z-28"s built that year. Many thanks to Jerry, Russ and Jane for sharing their story. Greatly appreciated. Hope to here that the L-78 is running again in the near future - nothing sounds and runs like a well tuned solid lifter big-block!!!!!! Those of you that posted negative comments are slime-balls. Just appreciate the history here, unselfish owners and the fact that this L-78 will have another day ...........
What ever happened to the adage "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"
Engine is getting rebuilt.
@@rosco465 that's exciting 🙏
Having the numbers matching block makes this car very special, spun bearings are not a big deal. Great story Jerry, thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks Bubba!! I flew up to Wisconsin to do this one.
The block must be magnafluxed to make sure it is ok...
Would always have a machine shop do the bottom end... maybe the whole engine on a car like this.
Jerry Heasley I have to call BS on this one , sorry don't pass the smell test at all !!
(edit-buster smith) You gotta know we will all want to know what makes you say that...
I live about 100 miles from these folks. I found in a garage 2 California VW Beetle Rust-Free cars stored in the same manner as this car. I bought 2 cars 3 motors and a rust-free floor pan for $600 dollars, stored for the last 20 years. I love folks like this because he had the sense to put it in the corner and just leave it for another generation to restore and enjoy. We are not owners of cars ,but we are merley care-takers .............
This is what I think about my restored noped. I'm just a care-taker.
these old people remember when these were new and now you bet they dont want to drive a 50 year old clap trap in there 70's and kids now dont want this old junk either..check out any car show and you wont see 20 year olds sitting next to some heap,,there all old geezers that will NEVER GIT THE MONEY BACK of what they wasted putting into it.
You don't know a whole lot about cars do you? There are young kids out there with Mechanic fathers that can help them update those old CLAP TRAP as you call them. That car put back in showroom condition is worth approx.$75.000 . There is a lot of garbage at car shows that looks good and is crap on the road. I have owned 6 very fast Mustangs and some chevs that are just as fast as the new ones if not faster.. If you are running a 100 mph in a new car or a 1966 chev you die just as fast in an accident.

I agree with Allen
Don't get me wrong
The classics are cool
I grew up with these
Rattle cans.
HOWEVER new cars are
Superior in everyway
It's called technology.
These old rattle traps
Suck in gas milage
Needed a tune up
Every 12,000 Miles
Pretty much shot around
75,000 miles or for sure
A vavle job and dripped
Oil everywhere.
New cars today will
Go 100,000 Miles before
First tuneup. I had a 02
Acura RSX first tuneup
210,000 miles I kept
The plugs just for proof
How good they looked.
Also proof there was a show on about 10 years
Ago Hillbillies and there
American muscle against
Yuppies and there wife's
Grocery SUV's and stock
Daily drivers.
It was embarrassment
Stock V6's against
This so call big V8 muscel. They " Hillbillies" got there Asses handed to them Everytime,
" They were pissed" EXCEPT
One time a old timer
Came out with a total
Jack out like a 66 stang
Nonthing about it was
A 66 most likely everything on it was
Made over seas?
Pretty sad the good ole boy's had to cheat to
Bring down the stock rides Of today & remember this was 10 years ago.
Now some stock cars
Today are or over
700 HP and V6's
Have just as much
Or more HP than some of
That old iron.
Also some 4 cylinders
Are at 260HP today
Or higher take the power to weight Ratio of today
old iron need to stay in the garages and look pretty at the car shows
I still love the old Iron!
Great car. Wow. Such a smart guy keeping all those parts from way back when no one knew these cars would be so collectible. So great he has the original motor still
People almost never regret owning a car, but regret the ones they sold. Still wish I had my 68 Z/28
I bought one very similar for $2,250 in 1978 with ~37K miles on it. It was built about a month before this one, also in Van Nuys, with original MR-code L78. Smog system & exhaust manifolds long gone, with a set of vintage Mickey Thompson Super Scavenger headers. Trans is a '68 M21 replacement, but rear end is original. Butternut Yellow with black bumblebee stripe and black vinyl top. Deluxe black interior with console/gauges. AM radio w/rear speaker, rear defogger, non-power front disc brakes with original rally wheels and disc brake caps. Found the UOIT printout in the car, matching the body number & cowl tag options. I still have it. Great fun to drive. Those Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers have a very unique sound. I hope that the car in the video (and all the parts, including the rare exhaust manifolds and smog system), end up in the hands of someone who'll do it justice. There are very few LOS(Van Nuys) '67 L-78 Camaros out there anymore, with the majority of them built in Norwood (with MQ code L78s). Thanks to Jerry for putting this video online.
Nice story, and you still have this Camaro?
When you take the block to the machine shop let them know that when they "deck it" they are not to machine over those matching numbers on the pad. If they erase those numbers, your car value plummets. You cant prove its a number matching car anymore. It just involves them stopping their machining process before it goes over the pad. Youll save the broaching on it also. Good luck, great vid!
Glad it's getting restored. That car was made back in the day when American auto makers designed great looking cars.
Beautiful!! - Best looking generation of camaro's in my opinion!
Only that style 3 short years my brother had a 67 rs in the early 80s 327 engine 4 speed manual transmission stupid his old lady told him to get rid of it and he got a oldsmobile car car.worth 30 thousand today
These kinds of finds are very bitter sweet.. On one hand you have someone salvaging a piece of American Culture that should be preserved for future generations and on the other its always a guy with so much stuff in a shed or barn that hes just to old to work on tbem any more or sick or even passed on and this is his legacy that he usually has no one to leave it to or his family members have no interest in carrying on what a father or grandfather started back when these cars were on showroom floors, tracks and drag strips!! The story that these old barns could tell.. The late night builds, the fighrs the laughter the frustration... All of it was such a part of this country's culture and it seems as though its all just fading away.. We live in very different times.
Beautiful 67 SS. Great color and everything.
What a gem. A diamond in the rough
He's a very cool guy to let go of his past and let someone else put the car back on the road again .Too start new memories
Had a numbers matching 1968 SS 396/325hp which I paid $900 for in 1973,sure wish I would have stored it till now! Very cool story, thanks!
I really love how you point out the tags and not just show them but explain what they mean
I've owned a '68 RS Camaro since 1978. It has been parked since July 7th, 1988. Marriage and kids will do that. It is not stock but is a complete car.
Dude fire it up on the weekend. The kids can wait.
I was born July 7th 1988
@@tabbyblake5738 and the oldest car you want to buy should be a 08'...lol'
are you interested in selling?
another great find. these L78 cars are hard to find. most of them were abused. definitely restore to original
Alan Goddard Has day
Jeez a real time capsule, she's a solid candidate for a restoration, wish it was mine.
I love this model Camaro and back during the 1st Arab caused fuel crises I had the opportunity to buy a convertible 396 SS .On my $35 fortnight apprentice wage, that wasn't going to happen though..This example has covered 76,000 miles, many of it at a 1/4 mile at a time so it has a minor race history and the trophy's to prove it . I'm glad he is a hoarder by nature because this is one old car that will be reborn with most of it's original parts intact. So many of these cars are long gone now as their race careers ended and they were parted out or simply neglected into oblivion.
I own a '67 SS350 and have for 48 years! Mine has hide a way lights and deluxe interior/ red/red with white convertible top! Have rebuilt the 350 once and went through the Muncie, and changed the rear to a 4.11 posi! Car has been meticulously maintained! Had to replace the original radiator last year! I have never walked away from the Camaro! Wife and I dated, married went on our honeymoon together in'80! We also own a Buick GN, purchased new with 12 miles on odometer! Also own a '68 Mercury Cougar, bought new by wife's brother! It has 428 cobra jet with ram air! Even have original window stickers for GN and Cougar! Love the 1st year Camaros! Nothing else compares to me!
Thanks for sharing - Camaro and Cougar both with the hideaway lights. Buick GN.
Now that’s a damn nice ride, would love to see it when redone.
Awesome find. You dnt stumble upon this stuff everyday especially with that mch documented history
This guy never threw away anything. He was even saving firewood up there in the rafters.
Love that car, and yes there are a few of these around. I have a friend that bought a 68 chevelle ss and it is sitting in his garage. He passed away two years ago. But the chevelle came out with 396 375 in four speed, it came out a deep brown color and is in really great shape. It has been kept inside. I hope to buy it soon
Great history by chevy SS CAMARO, Loved this muscle car
It's amazing how people find these cars and trucks!
My dads 66 mustang coupe just recently saw the day light for the first time in 30 years, I already have it running
That’s awesome
Nice!!!
I was always a GM fan but after owning several Cobra Jets and the absolutely awesome common 429/460's I love them all. 👍
Hey folks, I miss '67 SS 350 & 67 RS! It was great to see you let nostalgia live on. THANK YOU!
It’ll take a lot of money to get back in acceptable condition but the owner is one lucky guy.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for sharing. Very sharp car! Really good people, and what makes the car even that much more special, is the story behind it, it's history. Thank you, John
This is an awesome find i drag race at rock falls Wisconson it would be great to see it back in its glory.
What a great video and wonderful car and the fact that he’s going to pass it on is awesome he has his memories and he wants to see the car redone can’t ask for much more than that two thumbs up
Original paint !? Wow that’s amazing.
1967 Camaro is the most beautiful car ever produced.
Cesar A. Check out the hot wheels legends tour 2019. I bring one to every show. It's a Hot Wheels car
Please keep the original paint...it's survived so well!!! There are so few originals left if all it needs is two little patches on the quarters...and heck it don't really need em, just sort out the motor, interior, cut/polish and drive her, as is...that patina took 42 years to achieve...
agree!
I feel like there’s more cars in barns these days than were ever inthe show rooms 🥳
The cars a keeper I see the trailer hitch on the back had same on our 67 rs ss they should redo it and enjoy it for a while before they sell it and see what memories they can make like the power tour
Funny how cars back in the day had hitches for trailers...I had a 69 Firebird 400 - 4 speed back in 71 and pulled a trailer from Oklahoma to New Jersey.... To see a nice muscle car or most any car pulling a trailer today would be comical...
Just a few months ago, I cleaned out my parents' garage...much to the happiness of my father and the chagrin of my mother. I told them I may not be able to do it in the next few years so now was the time. Next is going to be the house...room by room.
I don't know how anyone could have a treasure like that buried away all of those years....
Wasn't such a treasure when first stored.
I got Porsche panamera but i will love to have one like this.
Guys, remember one thing. When we were teens in the 70s-80s all these cars were a dime a dozen. None of us knew that they were going to be worth a small fortune. We drove them,we raced them. Then we were stupid enough to get married. Wife, kids, career.why do you think these cars just sat in the garage. Lack of time and money
Very well stated!
Marc Aliventi Aliventi:
Let's not forget, the Support for these vehicles in the aftermarket did not start to takeoff until the 90s....unless you had unlimited funds to purchase the few remaining NOS/OEM parts-components held by dealers, salvage yards,collectors...you were out of luck. Had the Internet been what it became now in the 1980s...many pony cars would still be around..and they would be more affordable to purchase.
Unfortunately. Hoarders, and Speculators have driven-up the price of these "dime a dozen" as you stated. Just look at all the clones out there now....not excluding the ones with Brand-New body-shells made in Taiwan.
My high-school friend in the 80s had a limited-run Mach 1 Mustang....it was not until the early 2000s that he was finally able to get it back on the road again. Back then, although much pricier as even a used car compared to a 60s/70s pony car...the Dealer and Aftermarket support for Datsun 510s was quite remarkable compared to muscle cars...yet those cars (the unmolested survivors, with decent bodies) cost anyone dearly; $2,000+ was the going price, not far from what they cost New 15 years earlier. Not to many kids could come up with $1,500-$2,000+ for a 510/Z....spending $500.00+ for a beat-up Mustang,Camaro, Firebird,Challenger/Charger,etc. was easier on the wallet....drive it till it blew-up,etc.
D McNamara yup, I keep pissing off collectors because I still have my dad's 1969 shelby gt500
D McNamara nice, I love to see the REAL cars on the road. Not today's cookie cutter
Marc Aliventi Aliventi:
You can't get much individuality in styling of today's cars with 1 piece slab-sided stamping....Look even at the high-end vehicles or the : retro Challenger,Camaro,Mustang,etc....look very closely, very little compound character body lines/curves and design of the Original pony-muscle cars; beyond plastic bumpers and headlight/taillight buckets. That 1-piece stamping has to release from the press without defects ...unfortunately compound lines/curves can't be done (beyond door openings) with a large stamping....it's why all the old cars had to have multiple exterior and door opening stampings to achieve what the designers and the bean counters were willing to sign off on.
I love old cars and trucks. Wish I had a garage like that to store my car in
Man! If thats a 375 hp 396 that thing is outrageously fast! I remember the Novas were
12.7 at 110mph 8 inch slicks 4.56 gears, put 5.14 in got 10 inch slicks, never ran it. redline 7000
Nice ,I had a yellow 67 ss 396 4 speed w black stripe , nice car's .
Great find!!! I just go nuts when I see these findings. Thought I could never have this kind of luck. But I just got some the old guy next door died and I got to clean out the garage found 67 427 21000mi. vette and 69 Chevy P-u 4994mi. Both run.knew him since 81 and told me they were there. Now I have the bug I'm following leads now on more cars
I had a 68 back in 1987 I always loved the body style of them.
Beauty, they just don't make em like this any more, its sad in a way to see this car leave its original owner, he seemed pretty attached to it
Keep it! Get it running and enjoy it and take it to some car shows. Create some new memories and share it with others who will appreciate it. Have some fun with it.
Hopefully this gets this guy motivated to pull her out and get her back on the road. Shes too valuable to be wasting away in that shed. It would be great to have a follow up on this!
Russ is a stand up Gentleman....😎 Thanks for sharing..... Scotty in Alabama...
There's one of these red 396 67's in a shed in Paramus NJ that I've been waiting on since 1975.
thanks. I had 1969 firebird which I had to sell in 2009 had since high school. lost everything
it's nice to see people still have there memories and car to fix up and pass on to next.
The best thing in life is finding out that everything man-made fades away but a life with Jesus Christ is eternal
I'm never sure if I like these videos or hate them. I often say "these people should never own cars" simply because they neglect such important cars. But, if they didn't tuck it away, there's a good chance these cars would have been sent to the crusher years, decades ago. I'm also reminded that America is a free country and even idiots are allowed to own nice things.

Nice people
Not idiots 😡
@@moparchallenger749 Nice idiots. Why would someone let a nice car fall into a state of neglect.

maybe life happened 😀
at least like this it wouldn't be lost in a car accident like many were
When this car was put away it was just an ordinary old car. Not a collector yet. I bought my 68 Firebird in 1976 for $150.00, was ready for the junk heap. Nobody was collecting these cars until later.
That's just incredible, great story and thanks for sharing!
Great find and story.
Some people don't know how good they got it!
I just can't understand how a person could let something like this sit for 4 decades.
That easy to understand. You buy your dream car when your young. Then your girl friend get pregnant. You get married then you car starts needing major repairs. But you got to buy her a car for her and the kid. Then you got to buy a house. Then she is pregnant again. The next thing you know it’s 35 years and your car is still sitting there.
Eric, it’s called life, and you’re about to find out.
Me neither it's criminal
@@SKA343 no, it’s not criminal, it’s his car!
Thanks for the video have a great day be safe and i am sure the car will live on and make many more memories and impressions.
Steelies looked wicked on it
My dream car born in 1968 and love this one . Some how I ended up with a 75 firebird 400 big block . Raced in high school and sold it to buy a house.
Love that it's going to be restored
She'll want to see it when she finds out what it's worth. At the Pomona swap meet, I've seen rusted shells of first gen Camaros going for $20k.
The paint for the most part is in really good condition. Those wheels he pulled out of the trunk where fresh looking. Amazing car, hope someone can do the bare minimum to get it on the road again, in it's original glory and drive it.
going were for 20K back next week to the saugus swapmeet then river side swap meet etc etc...git real dude.

Would love to see an update video of this car fully restored
Beautiful car and it's his, he's free to do whatever he wants with it
Bad ass car, cool as hell.
incredible
I can’t believe people park a car like that and just forget about it..!!!!! Omg 😮
It's only a car Richard.
That beauty speaks for itself,🇺🇸👍
Kills me how people have these amazing cars stuffed in there garages with crap all over them or burried under garbage
At least they survived...most didn't
Yeah, back in 2005 a guy told me were a 1969 scj mach 1 was sitting buried in a garage while playing basketball. I didn't go look for it and a couple friends went and purchased the car. They call me up to go look at it and see what they had bought. I was sick when i saw the shaker hood, car had perfect deluxe interior and drag pack option. 18,000 miles. And they got it for $1850. Said they had move stuff for a hour to get too it. Still kicking myself for that one.
This car meant so much to this guy, look how he treated it.
It brought tears at the end.😔
Life is short....
No tears here, I love getting rid of my “ keepsakes”. It makes life so much more enjoyable.
That's awesome! Like money in the bank. Good thing he kept it.
I good a woody when that tire inflated' LOL
My favorite part, too - amazing.

I had one when he opened the trunk and the two original red steelies were there in mint condition with 40 yr old air in the tires!!

Well, at least this car was sheltered. Have MTB's "A New Life" spinning in my brain now. Car deserves one.
Great find I just hope the moist dirt floor didn't ruin it underneath but it did very well i guess from what i can see. I gave a thumbs up okay.
I was a college kid in River Falls, Wisconsin during that time. River Falls is just a hop skip and a jump away from Eau Claire.
My friends and I drove Fords and a couple of them were Mustang owners. The Camaro had come out a few years after the Mustang so we used to mess with the Chevy owners by referring to them as ‘cam-a-roos’.
Good days, great memories!
yes, thanks
He still doesn't know what he's got...
He will when he sees it roll across the stage at BJ.
You got that right
He could have made alot more if he'd thrown a few $ into getting it running again, then taken it to auction himself. The real winner is the guy who bought it.
Looks like crap as is now
Right anyone that let the car go like he has doesn't appreciate cars or art.
Amazing barn find!
So this guy had kids and none of them wanted that car?
That's what I was thinking. I was just saying to myself that if my dad had this car sitting in a barn like that, I would have talked him out of it years ago and would have it fixed as good as new.
They probably want all that junk off of there to sell it. A lot of younger people don’t care about these cars but are smart enough to know they’re worth something.
That crazy isnt it? I said the same thing lol. If i were 1 of his kids that car would never go. Funny thing is if he has kid they may have opted for japscrap, ive seen that b4.
I have seven brothers and two sisters. Even my sisters would have gotten into the bidding for that thing. I'd have been cleaning the old mans gutters until my hair fell out.
Two daughters
I can relate, I used to own a '68 Camaro. We had muscle cars because we were young. After all, children have child-like ways. However, I eventually grew up, got married and, had children of my own. Now, I have the best of both worlds, my childhood and my adulthood. :-)
Sell the junk and keep the car!
This.
I have a 1967 SS 396 Camaro 375 horsepower car that I have restored. The original motor and 4 speed transmission are long gone. It was ordered stripped and raced. When I purchased the car the original 12 bolt posi was howling as I drove it home. It took me 4 years to restore the car and was painted in its original Marina Blue.
Um, um, um, um, um, um, um into infinity. Bailed out at 2:55 in. Jesus....
Um um um um um Is your middle name impatient? Geez!
I love to see how old "GEMS" end up in barns/garages, only to become coffee tables or Ironing boards lol! ;-)
Enjoyed your video Jerry! Nice car, great story!
Woody from Winnipeg
Thank you, your comment means a lot to me. Made my day.
So great to know he knows the cars history. I bought a 61impala convertible in 1990 I know very little of its history only know it was used to race back on the day 349tripower factory 4speed
I saw the original chrome air cleaner for the car in the loft just to the left of the original smog pump he held up..

How can people dislike this? bob
I feel like it was starting to come back to life as he was putting air in the first tire
I thought that it might go Christine on us
Such a beautiful car. My all time favorite.
The 1st car I ever bought was a 67 camaro. I was 19 years old.

I bought a '68 Le Mans at 21 years old. I'm 21 years old now lol
WHO CARES ?

1970 GTX, 15 years old back in 1979!
One of the most incredible Camaro stories i have heard in a very long time. I just wish I can own one more before the good Lord takes me home. Great video, appreciate you sharing it here.
@1:00 My thoughts exactly and it would a shame to blast that car for that little bit of rust. Clean it up and keep it original as possible there a plenty of restored cars around.
That would be nice.
If I had that car I would keep it for as long as I live. Nice beautiful car for sure. Hasn't even been driven much.
