In the third year of recovery from a shattered hip and pelvis just starting to do it 30 seconds at a time 15 sets. Been working overall strength great increase in midsection
I have to say, it's interesting seeing so many people trying the horse stance outside of the martial arts community these days. I remember throughout grade school, middle school and highschool when I trained in Taekwondo and Shaolin kung fu, whenever people would ask me at school or out and about, what kinds of things we do in martial arts (because they want to learn something), I always offered the horse stance as well as one or two other stances as a foundation and beginning, then the kicks afterwards. Everyone looked at me like I was stupid and thought it was ridiculous. They said, "just teach me a punch or a kick". I would said, the horse stance is literally how you build mule like power with your side-kick, which I'll show you afterwards if you can do this. They would say, how long should I stand like this? I would say, try 30 seconds at first. They would do it and start shaking and say after 7 seconds, OW! I don't like this, and they would give up on trying to learn martial arts and return to their prior stance of making fun of me for doing martial arts. Keep in mind, this was the will power of middle school and high school kids.
i'm literally in the same boat and people keep asking me why i rarely ever get knocked down in sparring and with good defense from combined arts am so evasive good at parries and counters and never seem to even get close to being knocked out. And i tell them its all multiple years of discipline. Horse stance even works for stuff like muay thai and standard boxing. it keeps you on your feet. And it's good for checking leg kicks. And using push kicks and other stuff very powerful stuff gives you a strong base and if used correctly makes you 100 times harder to deal with.
I had a large friend group in college and several of us tried horse stance at the behest of our kung fu friend. I stuck with it and managed to get up to 3:30 after a lot of training. One of them stood up after 7 seconds and never tried it again, and we called him "Joe, the path of least resistance" after that.
Wish I was there. I have this weird completionist habit and would retry it until I reach 30 seconds. Don't know if I'd go for longer times, but seeing as this is the year I yearn to reach my current physical peak, I'd probably try my best to go for longer
Damn, first time i've actually heard of this stance as a tough excercise. (I've seen it in media and stuff, but didn't realise how hard it actually is) I recently started excercising again, and thought this would be a fun one to try. So, at your advice, I started for 30 seconds... jesus the burn. I made it, but just barely. I hate planking with a passion, and this reminds me of it very much, but I'll hold vast until I reach the 2 minutes from the video. And maybe I'll reach it for planking too, never got above 1 minute for that
Those people who made fun of you didn't deserve to learn martial arts because the first thing they should learn is discipline. I don't train martial arts but I do workout with calisthenics or body weight. The horse stance is an isometric exercise that really builds strength especially your legs given that in martial arts footwork is very important.

Except on bad days if the remaining time is surprisingly high - then it is just as bad if not worse than not knowing it, haha.
Today is my first. While listening I tried the first stance for 1min. Waited some minutes and tried again listening to the last part of the video. As I listen I was able to achieve 1:30min. But I guess since 40sec I started to get several urges to give up. I held my self on for 1 or 2 sec and the urges would pass.
I kick-started with 45 seconds, took it to 1 minute in like 10-14 days then 1 min 20 seconds and now hitting almost 2 minutes (last 2 days). I am also supplementing it with wall-sit exercise (was pleasantly surprised to see myself maintain that stance for at least 3 minutes)
I prefer you don't perform wall sits if you're consistently doing the horse stance. Wall sits are easier, but they don't mimic real life situations and proper balance movements.

Back in the late 80s I attended a Hung Gar school in NYC, and holding horse stances for long periods of time were par for the course. However, I learned the hard way that I needed to stretch my quads after doing them. I remember the day I could barely hold one for anything beyond a minute as my legs felt like lead. He is not talking only about the feeling of the chemicals, but of a spiritual resolve and determination in tandem, which is evident in the title of the video. Chemistry cannot create willpower. That is an act of the will. Chemistry can teach us that we can do a tough task, but the rest is our own choice.
This is likely to be true but just as likely to not be true. I think it makes sense if it is true. Youre trying to squeeze or hold or your body thinks PUSH something that isn't moving as hard as it can. So yeah maybe it does honestly
The Karate school I go to has this stance as a requirement for tests. And it gets pretty long at higher belt ranks. It's an awesome excersize for developing mental toughness and leg strength.
After trying this just a few times, I can already tell it will be supremely useful in gaging my physical and mental willpower. I am very weak in both aspects at the moment, but I was able to work up to 1 minute with horrendous form breaking at the end but still. Horse stance will humble your ass into the dirt.
Do not know if helps, but been practicing wushu for 9 year's and this is a posture use to build a incredible foundation, not going to correct or point out the errors, the experience tells me that every person is different, the posture changes, the height of the posture is different, even the position of the back is different (that for the movements we have to make and land in mabu/horse stance), but a minute of this every day makes a tremendous difference, trying to make the position like you do if accurate, and the way it's explained to get to that it's also very well explained too, happy to see someone to dedicate so much to something so simple Xiexie
This video is fantastic. i've started trying out the horse stance and indeed is a test for willpower, near the end of the 2 minutes as a beginner you really REALLY wanna quit beacuse it burns so bad but with determination you manage to succeed anyways. its great, i've been doing 2 minutes for the last few days and its kinda fun even. that and the soothing tone of your voice really made the video more enjoyable, this is actual asmr haha.
I didn't even get 3/4 of the way through the video and so far this is the most condensed, useful and helpful video I've ever seen on mabu between 5 step vs 7 step, the dynamic of standing too high and how plumb your spine is, etc. I appreciate it greatly. Also, as far as the time thing: I stopped using timers and now only use my breath as a measure. I do other exercises and so haven't pushed myself to grow past a certain point in horse stance, but I currently hold for 68 breaths at parallel.
I subbed once I heard your calming voice lol am practicing this every day but not for long as legs are not strong ❤thank you for the great instruction on this …..
Yes mobility! Like your meaning there. Horse stance is excellent strength and willpower builder. Your video reminds me that I should do it often, even though I am recovering from a severe stroke. Is good passive exercise that doesn't require moving coordination, which is difficult and dangerous for me right now. Like your delivery too, you are quite mellow.
I was counting while in Mabo... Recently I timed my stance. What I thought was twenty seconds was actually a minute. I kept counting slower and slower because I was afraid I wasn't getting the most out of the stance.
I have no idea why this was recommended to me, but I'm now using this exercise in my workout now. I have yet to truly master it, but it is already promising. Kitaro, you have my full attention, can't wait to see what else I will learn from you.
Had to hold it two hours doing strike and block drills during my 1st Dan TKD test. The 5 minutes between sets were gruelling due to no distractions, just standing there. I could barely walk away after. I also worked up to it over a year. Brutal but excellent will builder.
I like the challenges, especially the random timer. I've been practicing Hung kuen for over 15 years. My max. horse stance during my strong times was 7 min. with a stick on my thighs. Keep up the good work. Thumbs Up. 👍🏽
How did you reach a time like that? I would like to get to a time like that too but when I see I've been doingbit for 2 or 3 min, legs already burning and I have 4 mins to go, my mind gives up and than I stand back up, I've been stuck in this repeated cycle for a month and it's annoying
wow this was such a beautiful video. I havent practiced the horse stance since my youth but this perfectly vibes with my practice. Thank you, for this.
I remember joining my first ever Gung Fu class. I had been to the gym lifting weights for an hour and was totally wrecked. my CNS was fried. Then the instructor who seemed to float across the room he was so light on his feet warmed us up ( I was warm enough but went along with it) then had us in the hanging horse stance ( same as this different name maybe) and my entire body shook i went through pain, and a range of emotions I never thought I could experience in those minutes.. but after about 2 minutes something happened... I felt I could stay there all day it was like being reborn... we essentially continued the rest of the class which I later found out was Qigong ( essential energy flow techniques prior to Gung Fu) when I left the session it began to rain and every single rain drop was more real than anything in my life up until that point... no other way to describe it... I never looked back.
@Nei Gong Adept You see, I am too following a way, but I have no master and mostly life just shows me. Not for free, of course, I payed the price. I am 28, it became real for me a year ago. I am from Ukraine, so as you can guess, not all the paying has been done)

Great video! Another great way for beginners is to use a wall. Back flat against the the wall and sink into the stance. Using the staff brought back tons of memories. I have studied martial arts my entire life, most in Goju Ryu Karate and we call this stance shiko dachi . But in my gung fu training we call it horse stance. This stance if done correctly is extremely powerful. Again great video my friend
I do the horse stance in my weighted calisthenics routine and my god it feels awesome Just 2 sets of 1 minute each but with 40+kg on my shoulders/back and it's so much fun

Do not know if helps, but been practicing wushu for 9 year's and this is a posture use to build a incredible foundation, not going to correct or point out the errors, the experience tells me that every person is different, the posture changes, the height of the posture is different, even the position of the back is different (that for the movements we have to make and land in mabu/horse stance), but a minute of this every day makes a tremendous difference, trying to make the position like you do if accurate, and the way it's explained to get to that it's also very well explained too, happy to see someone to dedicate so much to something so simple
Xiexie
His voice and overall vibe is so calm that it feels so relaxing.. I was about to sleep 🙂
I'm going to do this for sure. It seems so good for the peace in my mind I think. Also, love it how relaxed this man is
The Power of Chi. (Geoffrey Morgan Pike.) Great book, all exercises explained in pictures.
I was counting while in Mabo... Recently I timed my stance. What I thought was twenty seconds was actually a minute. I kept counting slower and slower because I was afraid I wasn't getting the most out of the stance.
l came for the horse stand but l wasn t expecting such a nice voice . You make it very enjoyable to listen . Thank you !
I really liked the way you explain things and the calmnes with wich you express it, and what you presented to us, go on!
RUclips algorithm, at it again! I am today years old when hearing about this stance. Going to be incorporating this!
absolutely brilliant stuff, even for someone who has been on this path for years
Agent Smith has really chilled out over the years
😂😎
This is great! Glad you were recommended to me! Subscribed
this actually improve my squats and my performance on a bike. so thanks for uploading this video.
The ASMR is strong with this one
I love the energy you give bro very calm energy you have
I have no idea why this was recommended to me, but I'm now using this exercise in my workout now. I have yet to truly master it, but it is already promising. Kitaro, you have my full attention, can't wait to see what else I will learn from you.
The mabu is the greatest way to keep fit and healthy. Lovel video. 👍 Couldn't do without it.
Thank you!
Had to hold it two hours doing strike and block drills during my 1st Dan TKD test. The 5 minutes between sets were gruelling due to no distractions, just standing there. I could barely walk away after. I also worked up to it over a year. Brutal but excellent will builder.
Random timer is actually pretty useful; Il make sure to let my instructors at our dojo know about this,
thanks!
This was an amzing instructional video! Thank you!
I love your mantra they cut through fear and bring you to the present
I like the challenges, especially the random timer. I've been practicing Hung kuen for over 15 years. My max. horse stance during my strong times was 7 min. with a stick on my thighs. Keep up the good work. Thumbs Up. 👍🏽
How did you reach a time like that? I would like to get to a time like that too but when I see I've been doingbit for 2 or 3 min, legs already burning and I have 4 mins to go, my mind gives up and than I stand back up, I've been stuck in this repeated cycle for a month and it's annoying
It feels like I mentally can't do it
wow this was such a beautiful video.
Are the descriptions from this vid enough to reach the effect you had? Or is there more instructions? I would deeply appreciate any advice.
@Nei Gong Adept I had different instances of mini enlightenment, did you succeed in major one?
@Nei Gong Adept You see, I am too following a way, but I have no master and mostly life just shows me. Not for free, of course, I payed the price. I am 28, it became real for me a year ago. I am from Ukraine, so as you can guess, not all the paying has been done)
@Nei Gong Adept can you give a short introduction to what is the most fundamental ki practice. As I understand, at this level it increases vitality of organism and helps to decrease illnesses
Getting into horse stance in sparring was alway my favorite. Its a very strong stance.
Your voice is incredibly relaxing. I'm going to incorporate this during the evening.
Like the psychological component. Great idea with the random timer, too.
This is such an awesome video coming from someone who loves exercise, floor sitting, and philosophy
I've been doing it for almost everyday now. I went from 15 seconds to being able to hold it for about 2 mins.
I started last night and up to 1 min 30 sec.. I think it not only builds strength of mind, but also tolerance to lactate.
I do the horse stance in my weighted calisthenics routine and my god it feels awesome
Just 2 sets of 1 minute each but with 40+kg on my shoulders/back and it's so much fun
Lol i do the same thing with 340 kg on belt squat, isometric belt squat burns good, get some plates on fella.
@@williamm4366 If I had a gym membership I hella would!
For now I gotta work with what I have at home tho
bro, you make me so relaced, while still being focused. I just found you on researching the horse stance
We used to do the horse stance while training at my Hung-Gar Kung-Fu school when I was younger, and your video inspired me to get reacquainted with it.
This was very interesting. I've gone down a rabbit hole and watched more of your videos. I really enjoy your process and editing. You need more subscribers, I was expecting around 200,000 because of the quality of the video. I have tried the horse stance and will try and incorporate it into my workout. Thanks! Keep up the good work.
oh my god I need to watch more of your videos, your voice is fantastic
I've never been to this channel before. I don't even know if I'm going to watch the full video. I just wanted to share that seeing the thumbnail and title made me practically have ptsd flashbacks of all those years in martial arts in this god damn stance, lmao. Just looking at a horse stance makes my legs burn. I've probably spent more hours of my life in horse stance than asleep.
Dang i wanna sound that relaxed
Beautiful video. Thank you 🙌 A man must add.. You sound like you have the heart of an Aikidoka 💚🙏
I've had knee problems for a very long time now and I really enjoy training myself, but because of my knees I haven't been able to fully train my lower body as much as I would like, but I hope I can use this to replace most of those!
Random thing about the horse stance. I was using it while painting with a roller. My pregnant wife wanted to help so much but I wouldn't let her. Eventually I let her help, she went into horse stance and her water broke. LOL, the boy is okay.
It's a very beautiful video brother. I love the colors, your calm and clear voice. You've inspired me to make some more in-depth content on specific Asanas. Thank you for sharing 🙏
Wow, thank you
I have been feeling in my heart of hearts that I need to discipline myself in order to be healthier in mind and body. So beautifully random for your video to appear. Subscribed 💙🙏🏾
Same here brother!!!
You speak the true true. Respect and Gratitude.
This is the kind of geezer you don't want to mess with on the street - he will break your wrist bones slowly whilst talking to you calmly in that asmr voice about the benefits of horse stance - lol kidding aside excellent video sir! ty for upload
Appreciation for your candid tone and perspective!
From horse to side horse to standing horse. It's the foundation of who we are💪💪💪
Tell'em brother 🙏
Thank you very much. I appreciate we way you explain. Horse stance is a big challenge for me. Some days I can't go low, nor stay more than a few seconds, sometimes it's better, but still not low enough and still only several seconds. I will try with your video ..... see if I progress .....
Thanks so much, I feel the effects almost instantly; however I should add that all feet are not the same size and cannot be used as a general micro measurement.
Thank you. Now I can get azure flames faster for my strength/fortitude shattered katana build.
I've been practicing kung-fu for years and this stance is one of five used in every single thing that we do. I can confirm this stance really helps in both spirit and body
What's the other four?
@@nugraha___ this is called smth like the horse rider stance (?), another one is the archer's stance, and the rest I don't remember their translation from chinese but we call them, Ma sik, Gong sik, Xiebu, Tai Toi, Pok Toi. The last two have to do with kicks. Otherwise they are known by some other names I am not used to.
I really love your voice and the general asthetic of the video, awesome stuff keep it up!
Glad you enjoy it!
That random timer is good idea for meditation in general. I'm going to try it.
definitely gonna add this to my routine
started doing this not rly reqularly but from time to time after watching baki and it’s a good all toghether exercise for leg conditioning. bin striking and grappling for a hot minute and it’s helped me with high kicks and being im bottom guard. gonna start doing it more and this video was awsome, please keep up the good work and i hope to see more and more awsome videos(sorry for the bad grammer english isn’t my first language).
Kitaro you are amazing! Love your content. Keep creating. I hope your vibration attracts all the people you can imagine
Thank you so much for your nice comment!
You voice is very calming, thank you for your video
Great Video. I like the calm setting. And frankly speaking i envy your voice 😀
The mcdojo I went to did not teach us that horse stance was so deep!
Whole new world for me
WOW! RUclips had this video up front and center, so I clicked. This is what I am going to begin. I used to be able to sit Indian style/Butterfly. Now my hips feel stuck. Will this Horse stance help to loosen the hips/Flexors/groin area? I am following your channel now
so glad i stumbled upon this video i was just saying to myself how stiff my movement is today and bam youtube read my mind ty for the video
Thank you for making this I very much appreciate your work! 🙏💥
ive spent hours and hours in this stance as a child.
havent been enduring it like this for a very long time....... pretty sure i didn't an hour duration most of the Progressive ceremonies. wish id recognized my own success as a child.
THANKS 😊
" I NEEDED THAT "
I AM GOING TO DO THIS
OK 30 DAYS
I WILL DO THIS
THANKS 😊
CLO ❤️
"spiritual energy", "spiritual fire", my dear friends, THAT IS YOUR TESTOSTERONE COURSING THROUGH YOU! YOUR VERY ESSENCE!
thanks for reminding me and motivating me
Kitaro, this is an awesome video. Thank you so much for making this. I searched RUclips for something exactly like this. Something that connects the body and the mind and spirit. When you said you felt as if the burning in your legs converted to the fire in your heart I felt like I wanted to experience that more than anything right now. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your content.
I recently got back into fitness again after a long period of deskwork. Damn, barely made 30 seconds. This seems like a good excercise to test myself with. I hope I will hold on until I hit the 2 minute marker
I only got 45 seconds my first time
😭😭 I barely made it 25 seconds.
I don't know if horse stance will build will power, but I used to practice it during my late teens, few sets of 3 reps, 1min 90degrees horse stance. It built tremendous shoot power for football, I've never shot so strong in my life as back then.
...so very inspiring and instructive.....Thank you for this.
Master told us that, as a young disciple he wasnt allowed to learn "anything" until he could hold Mabu for an "hour"....!...However, when he arrived in America and got to know most of us he realized quickly he would have to 're-appraise" some of those ancient tenements LOL
Peace and blessings
very nice calm voice. makes it more intresting
Strong Work!
