  • Whitewater rafting down Kern River on May 21st, 2023 with Kern River Outfitters. This was a half day trip which consisted of 2 laps down a section of the Upper Kern with a bonus section past Riverside Park to the cemetery take-out. What's great about Kern River is that even with very high flows, there are still sections of the river that you can run that aren't too crazy. DO NOT enter the river without being on a guided tour!

    I did this on the Toulome river and got kicked off the boat when people didn't follow instructions and we hit a rock. My shoes got sucked off of my feet and I had to ride the entire section of Rapids by myself in the water. I got sucked under several times but I just kept my feet out in front of me and stayed calm. When I got back in the boat some people asked me if the water was cold and I said I have no memory of the temperature. I was so focused I didn't even think about the cold.

      This is a great video! We did 3 laps of this area and had the same thing happen to me on Ewing's Rapid. The water is much lower, but still a class 3 in that area of the Kern. I was with younger boys and a couple didn't follow directions so well and were not paddling so we hit a rock and my son and I got thrown off. Didn't feel a thing until after I got back in the raft. I had cuts, and bruises and was bleeding on my knees and hands from the rocks. I was a little shaken up since it was the first time I had been thrown off a raft in rapids. My son and I were saved pretty quickly because we had a great guide with us. I didn't even notice the temperature of the water because the adrenalin was flowing like crazy when I was getting trashed around the rocks. Definitely a fun and scary trip haha.

      Dang this is exactly what happen to me, my left shoe got taken of and i dont even remember the cold, the only difference was that our boat turned upside down and the instructor couldnt turn the boat so i swimmed 1 km. Before we got in the boat the instructor told us that if the river was flowing a bit harder that it then too dangerous would be, and yeah i found it pretty terrifying after i got somehow safe on a rock just when i was about to pass out lol...

    rafting is fun, as long as guild keeps it exciting while keeping the raft proper side down.. the class 3+ and up should never be played with... i lose a dear friend and an expert kayaker a few years ago and now i paddle the safer lines not the more challenging ones

    Why is water so brown?

    • @mark_girardeau
      @mark_girardeau  Год назад +3

      because the water is flowing so high and fast this year that there's a lot of sediment
