Kitten 'Sway' with Extreme Case of CH Cerebellar Hypoplasia trying to walk

  • This is my sweet kitty Sway-Girl. She has an extreme case of Cerebellar Hypoplasia and will never actually walk. Although she does half run, half flop at feeding time. This is her at 10 weeks old in January 2009. I took her into a spare room so she wouldn't bang into things as she flopped around. She hasn't improved any. She's a happy, spoiled, loved kitty that even my husband loves (and he hates all of our animals) HA HA HA!! Sucks to be him.
UPDATE: Because of the angle of her back legs, her bowel movements were difficult and she ended up with anal prolapse. Unfortunately, because her initial condition of CH would never improve, thus making it impossible for the prolapse to improve, there was no permanent fix for her. Just repeated trips to the vet for a new anal purse string stitch every month or so. I felt that would be cruel to put her through that difficult and painful procedure for many years to come. A few weeks after this video, I made the obvious humane decision to have her euthanized to end her constant pain of the anal prolapse, which was getting worse every few days. Her CH in no way altered my decision to keep her forever but the prolapse changed everything and put her at risk for infection, on top of already being in pain.

Sorry for your lost. She was a very beautiful brave kitty and how lucky you were to have her for a while. Thank you for taking such good care of her, and then being there to make the right but difficult decision. Hopefully her story and video will inspire others to consider helping to rescue, foster and adopts special cats like Sway. And importantly, to help demonstrate that humans must do what is best for their pet no matter how hard it is for themselves.

I am 250% positive that she is walking and running at the Rainbow Bridge while she waits for you to come get her one day. You did the right thing and I'm proud that you shared her story with everyone. It was a hard decision to make but I'm sure you know how much she lived you for it. I wish fir you "blue skies. @@mikeladoucer7448 The description states that she suffered an anal prolapse as a result of the angle of her hind legs. I have a 6 month old kitty (Orangey) that has CH. He is the kitten of a stray I took in while pregnant. I adopted him out to a loving home, but his condition got worse, and they asked if they could return him. I immediately said I would. He was always my favorite kitten.
Since getting him back (2 months ago) he has continued to decline. The vet diagnosed him with CH a few weeks after I got him back. He went from walking with a slight wobble to now being confined to a bed, lying on his side. I have to take him to the bathroom, food and water bowl and pretty much everywhere I go. He sleeps all the time and I feel horrible for him.
I’m considering having him put down because I can’t imagine him living like this for the next 10 plus years. But I also know in time, some cats do learn to adapt and “get better.”
I’m so heart broken and unsure of what to do. I love him so much, but that love causes me to not want to see him suffer.

    • @PrincessPoohs
      @PrincessPoohs Год назад

CH does not progress, meaning he should not have been getting worse if it was CH. It very likely could have been CH with something additional that compounded things, like an inner ear infection causing vestibular disease. These are totally treatable! An infection causes inflammation to press on the vestibular area responsible for balance in the inner ear and causes extreme vertigo and dizziness. If your cat was suffering from this as well as the fever from infection, it would easily explain the extra symptoms you mentioned. I know because my CH princess Sophie is going through the same right now.

I know it was a hard decission. I've had 3 cats have to be put down. The first was dying of heart cancer. The second's liver began shutting down (our guess was it had something to do with Swiffer Wet Jets since when it first came out no one knew that allowing their pet to walk across the just-cleaned floors, dry as they may be, could cause extreme liver damage). Most recent was born with a condition where, no matter what, her liver would have shut down.

This condition in animals makes a lot of people cry. It's heartwarming and sad. Sway didn't need to learn how to walk. It had already been determined that the severity of her CH would never permit her to walk upright. I just like to work with her to help her find a convenient replacement for walking that would work for her. And please, don't fight the urge to save a shelter animal. Call around and specifically ask for a special needs or undesirable. Maybe a three legged or one eyed dog or cat.

If she does know how disabled she is, then it would be too sad that she not only has the handicap but also realizes that she's can't do anything to make it stop. cerebellar hypoplasia is a non-progressive, non-contagious neurological condition that results in walking and balance problems. A kitten is born with “CH” when her cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls fine motor skills and coordination, is underdeveloped at birth. An cerebellum’s growth can be stunted by a number of factors, most commonly if the mother contracted the feline distemper virus while pregnant or if there was some sort of trauma to the kittens while they were in the womb.

I've had cats in the past, all healthy but after seeing all the videos like this and finding out that they are 'put to sleep' because of this condition has made me want to adopt one with Cerebellar Hypoplasia in the future. They seem like perfectly happy cats!

I agree with most of the others - I have witnesses in person and video, people who have cats with severe cases of CH and it honestly shocked me. One in particular where the poor cat couldnt walk or even use his muscles to urinate or defecate and the owners were so selfish that they wouldnt euthanise him. I saw a similar video where a lady had to kind of rub her cats but with a towel (similar to getting orphaned young kittens to go #1 & #2) and she had it EASY compared to the person I mentioned earlier. You absolutely did the right thing.

When bowel movements and prolapse became an issue, there was no way I could let this continue. Life was fine for her until the medical issues started.

I think an animal will show you when they've given up. This little guy as so much life! When I see an animal with something like this or a missing limb or anything, I try not to feel sorry for them, because like people with a disability, they dont want pity, they just want to be treated the same as any other person. This kitty got treatment like any other kitty would, love, food, and a place to sleep, and thats a happy cat. Never take pity, instead show your happiness for them! :D

Aw, now this makes me sad. I've been watching cats with CH and laughing (not in a cruel way, it's just freakin' funny.. like a drunk :P) and wanting one. But this reminds me why I try to stay away from pets; the loss.

My boyfriend's cat has this condition. She is super adorable and loved by her whole family. He has other cats but she is the favorite among our friends. :3

Please don't judge her. She obviously did everything she could. Bless your heart for being so concerned. The quality of that kittens life was definitely compromised.

It's a shame she had to be put down. I read somewhere that hydrotherapy works really well for CH cats. I guess the weightlessness the water gives them helps them learn how to carry themselves right?? Anyway, I'm sorry for your loss and I hope where ever Sway is now, she's happy.

So sad to hear about Sway's passing... but I'm glad you took her in and tried to take care of her as best you could. She was such a cutie. And one of many inspirations for me to want to become a foster for these adorable CH cats. Her little mewl and wiggles melts my heart.

@molly58826 She had Cerebellar Hypoplasia. She was a great kitty. It's not an incredibly common ailment but she had the worst case my vet and many other vets had ever seen. Walking would have never been an option for her. But she didn't know she was different. She was happy.

She's gorgeous. We had to put our CH girl down just last week because she had a rare reaction to an antibiotic. We miss her so.

She played and crawled (or flopped) around like the rest of them. She was a blessing in my life and I'll miss her always. You can make a wheelchair out of something lightweight like ink pen tubes (the white ones).I was working on one for her but she never got to use it.You can also get a large water bottle (like for a guinea pig) since severe CH cats can't have a bowl of water.Sway would have drowned so I syringe watered her by hand 4 times a day or more. The hanging water bottle makes it easier.

@mill181 Then he'll be fine. Milder cases have little impact on them. As they grow they learn to deal with it better. They really improvise so they can do the same thing as healthier cats. My baby wasn't as fortunate. Good Luck and love him dearly!

@emogirl1234ist It has a disorder. The kitten is in no pain, and picking it up to carry it everywhere will lead to a severe dependency on the owner for the cat to get around. Letting the kitten figure out how to get about on its own is essential. The cat feels no pain, it just takes longer to learn how to do things their own way.
