    Where they dropped the ball *is* with the "bounded accuracy". They have never used it properly in 5e design, instead only as a loose guideline.
    We know Proficiency is +2 to +6 for PCs, and extends out to +9 for a CR 30 monster. Double it with Expertise.
    We know Ability Score Mods cap at +10 for 30 in a Score.
    We know +3 is the typical height for magic enhancement on a weapon but +5 is possible.
    We know that AC can range from 8 to 30, for the most part.
    We know that Skills can certainly hit +20 (and even far more) to the roll.
    Throw in Advantage for a bit more oomph.
    -
    So why aren't these numbers used to work out meaningful CRs and reasonable monster/NPC/PC stats? Why can't they assign "values" to certain things to work out a reasonable CR? Damage dice, damage types, action economy, and situation/encounter special abilities that can turn the tide.
    Pathfinder 2 seems to have done it. GURPS seems to have done it. Other systems seem to be aware of, and utilize, their probable ranges accordingly - particularly the more "narrative" systems like Dungeon World (PbtA) and FATE Core/Accelerated.
    Allegedly, 3 to 6 months is the average for a D&D campaign (for one reason or another), and that might be 4 to 8 level-ups. If using bounded accuracy, then that too should be taken into account for the CR calculations.
    -
    Back in AD&D, there was a chart to determine XP values of monsters based upon their Hit Dice and special abilities. Hit Dice were used as a rough gauge to create combat encounters (party total HD vs monster total HD), EG. perhaps a 4:1 ratio was super easy, while 1:1 was challenging, and 1:4 was difficult. It was simpler times and it worked just fine.
    In 3rd Edition, it was just a numbers building race, the higher your numbers, the more powerful you were at a particular thing (AC, BAB, Skills, Saves, etc.). A bit more free-for-all, a min-maxer paradise. A good example of how DPR and HP are the core concern, because everything is solvable with violence.
    -
    The D&D system, since 3rd edition, has been troubled by ever increasing HP, Attack Bonuses, and Skill Bonuses. It is a complex thing but they know what the goal of the gameplay is, don't they? It can be fixed, but would require a complete rewrite - a true "next edition".
    But..people still play D&D and that tells a story too. Despite the lack of balance, people still are managing to have fun and keep coming back to the table. Is being amorphous and unbalanced actually a feature, and not a bug?

  • @jonsaucy8440
    @jonsaucy8440 7 дней назад +8

    I was never really concerned about capstone features or their balance; since most never reach that pinnacle anyways.
    What I’ve long been concerned about, and has not been addressed, is the rapid growth/front loaded power gains from levels 1-10. If they had balanced that and spread it out a bit more; then I could’ve hailed this as a huge leap forward.
    This alone would’ve curtailed some of the dips from multiclassing that fundamentally cause great strife at the table.
    Alas they did not.
    So short answer: No.
    Long answer: Nope.
    It would take a huge design change on the DMGs side to counteract these long term design issues at the upper end.

    Encounter building is one of the most complicated parts of running a DnD game. It's one of those things where even the most intuitive system doesn't always work. It always comes down to your experience as a DM and knowing your players.
    I don't know if there will ever be a system that works as intended for a brand new DM.

      How do you possibly create an accurate CR system? Given ranged and melee attacks aren’t guaranteed in a party?
      A dragon flying around vs a party of great axe wielding barbarians is significantly harder than against a party of Long bow wielding Rangers.
      What should the CR of the dragon be given the dichotomy?

      Do want tabletop combat that is fast or has lots of choices?
      Theory: You can’t have both unless the game has a high skill barrier of entry.
      To have both speed and complexity, it requires highly experienced players which decreases accessibility to new players.

    Hey man, I've DM'd a short three-session arc with my group (and made more than a few of the mistakes you've warn against lol) but just been a player aside from that. Recently some friends asked if I could DM an actual, full campaign for them, and I've been studying the guides and rulebooks to prep but I've got to say your videos with dos and don'ts for DM's have been CRAZY helpful! We haven't even started the campaign yet and your tips (especially explaining why something is a good or bad idea) has helped relieve my anxieties with the prep work and pointed me in some good directions. I really appreciate your content, keep up the good work!
    Tl;dr: your "DM advice" videos have been a very helpful resource for an inexperienced DM, already thinking they should help make the campaing even more fun for my players. Much appreciated!

    The Pathfinder 2e Dungeon Master's Guide will probably remain so much better. To say Pathfinder 2e has a "robust" encounter balancing system for DMs is an understatement! Even without that system specific math crunch fest at the tail end of the book, it's a great guide for learning and/or refreshing DM/GM/Narrator/Storyteller skills, so it has a LOT of system agnostic value.
    I'm hoping Kobold Press's "Tales of the Valiant Game Master's Guide" will do what the D&D 5e Dungeon Master's Guide really should have done; their Player's Guide and Monster Vault are a pretty decent (and possibly even superior) substitute for anyone looking to get in their D&D 5e fix while avoiding the Hasbro/WotC corporate ecosystem.
    3:05 Good news! Rangers in "Tales of the Valiant" by Kobold Press DON'T suck! And as a side note, they're not nearly as bad in Pathfinder 2e either.

    Imagine being able to flip through the 5e DMG and quickly find an appropriate CR for a BBEG that would challenge a group of four 17th level PCs. Then, one flips through the Monster Manual and picks a suitable CR solo boss that would challenge that party and be able to survive 3-4 rounds. No steamrolling or cake walk--just a challenging, hard-earned victory for the PCs. That's the type of encounter I would want as a player and want to run as a DM. And it might be only a 30-40 minute fight (if the players didn't have to pour through reams of options for what they can do on their turns).
    I would guess that you wouldn't want to halve the monster HP, because you want it to be able to withstand a single round of nova PC abilities. Double or triple the damage of the monster just to whittle down PC HP and make the encounter feel dangerous.
    Sadly, I expect one would have to house rule the crap out of stuff to get it to work (e.g., fix or remove encounter-ending spells)...or just move to a game system that is better designed for fast and furious combat.

    • @scetchmonkey007
      @scetchmonkey007 6 дней назад

      It depends on the monsters build. 4E did a better job at this with Minion, normal, Elite and Boss monsters. At least in theory. For groups of monsters you want low HP high damage. let the players cut through swaths of baddies. for BBEGs you want high HP low damage. So they can take a hit but dish it out round to round. But then again you want monsters to feel different from one another based on what they are. Ogers low AC, high HP and Damage, no special abilities. Mind Flayers, Low HP, Low AC, with tons of crowd control effects make them super dangerous. But if you give each say the same CR rating it means something completely different when you start using multiple creatures of the same type.... I had a Group of 3 - CR 7 mind flayers capture my lv 15 party.... because the highest Int in the part was a 10 and they all failed their saves versus stun. 3 CR 7 Giants would get curbed stomped by the same party, there is no avoiding these problems, without dumbing down the system to just HP and damage.

    In my personal opinion, the DMG won't fix much. There would need to be a systemic overhaul of the game (say.. a new edition) to fix these problems. Given that the company seems more geared to annoy DM's with the 'revised' rules, and want to push things towards an AI model for DM's it's unlikely that there will be solid help for anyone running the game anymore.
    Computer says no.

    I got into the 2024 books. I can't get them yet, because they are not out. However I watched plenty of RUclips videos on it. I especially like the deep dive interviews that Todd Kendrick gives to Jeremy Crawford and other game developers. There is a lot here to be excited about. Personally, I am most excited about the quartets of subclasses. I see that Luke is very invested as well. It is interesting to learn his hopes. A big thing is CR. That has actually been addressed in the interviews. The developers themselves realized that monsters were not meeting their CR levels. So what they did is tweak the stat blocks to make monsters reach the levels. This includes making the high CR monsters more dangerous. Hopefully that will make the game easier for DMs like Luke.
    There is a bit of an aside for rangers. I did learn a lot about class changes. This was what most of the interviews where about. All classes got improvements. The rangers and monks in particular got major overhauls in response to the backlash they get. Two of the many boosts for the ranger is things that are desperately needed. One is that the hunter can change their attuned environment during a long rest. The other is that pet attacks count as a bonus action. I don't think the ranger or any other classes got shafted. Once the game is actually released to the public, we can see how this works in practice.
    The end of this video talks about speeding up battles. Luke has talked about this before. Yeah, I don't don't what to tell you. I did come up with a way to speed up battle. However it is a big change to the system. So it probably won't be used in the upcoming books. I have it for the player to roll once for damage and add modifiers to that damage roll. There is adding the offenses of user of the role. This is proficiency plus the ability score that powers the attack. This ability score is any one except constitution. The is subtracting the defenses of the opponent from the roll. This defense is usually the armor bonus plus strength. I get armor bonus by taking the AC and subtracting 10. If there is a saving throw, the defense is the attribute that matches the saving throw. My method speeds up combat, because missing attacks is rare to nonexistent. That makes battle so much faster and smoother. Rolling only one per turn instead of twice is a big time saver. What Luke is proposing is spikey play. Maybe spiky is a good word for it. I do get the appeal if it being more exciting and suspenseful. My way is different. It has more consistency. Missing an attack is very frustrating. Bad luck is my pet peeve in games. My method makes gameplay far less swingy. This is appealing because it removes a lot of frustration in battle. There is a lot of criticism over creatures with high hit points. In this video Luke recommends lowering hit points. In my system that is not an i9ssue. Even if a creature was a damage sponge, they will still go down quickly. That is because they are a lot easier to hit.

    I truly cannot believe that people in general complain so much about the CR System at high levels. Specially after Mordekainens, wich adds numerous high level NASTY guys (Looking at you Orcus). It is not that hard to try a lets say, Standard Deadly encounter, and if the players just own it, then try maybe Three times the deadly encounter, and figure it out BEFORE the BBEG comes into play.
    Im overall pretty optimistic with the new changes. Its not going to solve every problem in existance, but is certainly a good step forward from what I've been seeing.

    I'm craving for more cool optional rules like we have in 2014 DM's Guide. I'd really like a different HP system, a bit like The One Ring, where a wound really means something. I love DnD, but to me makes sense that if you get stabbed by a sword, you'll die being lvl 1 or 20. What must happen is you getting harder to hit, but not impossible to any creature like the current game system does with high level players and their +x armors and shields.

    @Theadalas 7 дней назад +5

    In my 17 years as a DM, I never really cared that much about encounter balance, to be honest, and the only game I had trouble with was PF2 ed, because of how rigid that system was. In D&D there was always a way out of a bad situation. In AD&D, if a group of goblins caught your party by surprise, your wizard could cast a Sleep spell and pacify up to 16 goblins (there were no saving throws), turning a TPK situation into a clear victory. In 3.5, if a troll ambushed your level 3 party, you could cast Grease or Tanglefoot Bag and either deal with it the old-fashioned way or just run away. This was true of PF 1st edition, but in 2nd edition your low level party could never hope to win against a troll. Your Wizard spells and Tanglefoot bags were useless because of the way saves scaled with monster levels. So while you can get away with an unbalanced encounter in 5e, in PF 2e you REALLY need to follow this encounter balance and reserve your Mines of Moria-inspired troll encounter until the PCs are at least level 4 (if it is just one troll with no goblins around).
    Having said that, I can give some advice on how to avoid unfun encounters. Challenge Rating is useful, although the system in 5e is much worse than the one we had in 3.5 or 4e. However, there are things to look out for:
    1) Monster damage - if certain monsters can deal more than 50% of your fighter's HP round after round, then it is probably a bad idea to throw them against your party in large numbers. A single troll or ogre can be fine, as your players can coordinate their attacks against the big guy and turn him into pinata, even if he is surrounded by much weaker minions (like goblins).
    2) Defensive stats - look at the monster's HP and think about how many attacks it would take to take it down. This is my biggest gripe with 5e monster design - the HP bloat is unreal in some cases. Back in B/X, AD&D1, AD&D 2 and D&D 3e, all orcs had 1d8 HP (average of 5), but now they have 2d8+6 (average of 15). Many monsters have been buffed in a similar way. Reduce the HP of monsters that you want your players to fight for no more than 2 turns, but perhaps keep the original values for creatures that are supposed to be leaders, champions or large and powerful beasts.
    3) Finally, look for spells and abilities that can easily shut down PCs. No player wants to fight a large group of basilisks or similar creatures that have save or suck spells. Limit their numbers, reserve them for the more difficult encounters, etc.
    4) Start small. Start your campaign by using easy encounters, just to test your players and their characters, and then adjust encounter difficulty.

    • @johnevans5782
      @johnevans5782 7 дней назад +2

      I largely agree, but I also feel that Monster damage largely does not scale up well.
      I was running an encounter with a CR 10 boss demon against a part of 4 9th level characters. His physical attacks were 3 attacks per round doing a mere 2d6 +4, 2d4 +4 and 2d10 +4. The party was really not that threatened by him. On the other hand after he summoned a CR6 Chasme, the fight changed, with the Chasme dealing out 7d6+2 every time it hit (14d6+2 when it critted) and lowering maximum Hit points with each hit.The fact that the CR6 was more damaging then the CR 10 was a bit frustrating to me as a DM.

      @Seranuelian it's the opposite. I just don't believe everything has to be fine-tuned in a game that has randomness as its primary resolution mechanic. What sucks however are long combats that the outcome is known from the beginning.
      What I do is I present challenge how I feel it is reasonable to occur in that part of the world. If it is a goblin tribe it might count into dozens, maybe even a hundred members where half or more are non-combatants. Then I let my players figure out how they want to deal with it. Obviously, head-on charge will likely end up bad for them, but comming with a smart idea (like poisoning their water supply) is much more rewarding for players than beating the crap of every single goblin.

    a few years ago I completely reworked the CR system and PC damage to have a much easier encounter building system. You cannot do what I did and be backwards compatible, so they cannot fix it. Also made it so the only single monster that is a proper threat to a party is a legendary creature. IE. a single CR 10 legendary is a tough encounter for four lv10 players. and 2 CR 10 normal monsters is also the same threat level against that party. A Cr 15 normal creature thrown against the lv10 party is a gamble it could curb stomp either way. as with the right crowd control spell it could be crippled or it might just one shot a pc in each round of combat. thus it should not be used in a normal circumstance, which is apparent because of its high CR

    You it some of the main points, for me, I would like to see more reward options outside of magic items and gold. I know we’re getting bastions, but things like Lycanthropy and vampirism, making them transformations, and potentially a feat or 2 to support the player in controlling their new found powers. I don’t want to take away my players character.
    Things like over sized weapons and if a player can actually wield one? With all the character options that allow them grow, why not touch one it?
    DM rewarded options, that the player cannot get unless given or is given permission outside of the standard player options.
    Also, I have a sneaky suspicion the dmg2024 will add more epic boons. Doesn’t count towards what I’m looking for expanded player rewards. 🤪

    Having actually halved hp and almost doubled damage dice from monsters in the Kobold Press books I found it was still swingy as far as difficulty goes as the players damage output when they hit could end the fight prematurely. 60% to 75% of the original hp seems to work better with my multiclassed players who are using "all the splatbooks". But the general idea is solid. Keep the battle to three rounds and its less of a slog.

    there are now approx a dozen versions (editions) of D&D. to include this new 2024 version. nothing is broken! it's a matter of how you choose to run/participate in the game. if you power game, then things will 'feel' broken. trying to 'balance' encounters, will make things 'feel' broken.
    however, if you play rules as written, there is not much that 'feels' broken.
    personally, I took parts from AD&D, 3e and 5e, plus some alternate game mechanics (spell points instead of slots, no initiative combat, AC as damage reduction).
    because the game is D&D, but not solely a particular version, it breaks the 'feeling' of things being broken. the whole game is much more fluid and without distinct separation of events; role-playing or tactical combat.

    Unfortunately, from the stat blocks released with the free rules on DDB, it looks like they are rewriting the monsters to sound cooler, but are weakening almost all of them by reducing both Hit Points and damage output. If this holds true for the Monster Manual, then they are increasing Player Character power and reducing Monster power. I find this to be ridiculous.
    In addition, instead of looking at increasing the Bounded accuracy by allowing the DCs and ACs to be higher ( My own personal DM wish list item) it seems like they have set many ability saves and skill DCs to simply be 15. This is going to reach a point where no one can fail at anything pretty quick.

How does anyone expect consistent encounters when players may or may not have a variable buff that can vary from 1-4 and might have a reroll that is mathmetically worth the same as a +5 bonus but changes from that by 1-2 points in worth if the target roll is outside of a the 8-14 range?
    PF2e Encounter Building is so reliable in part due to the fact they know exactly what your math is and rerolls aren't the main way for GMs to give bonuses to rolls. In 5e your math can swing moment to moment about 10 points.

Of course a company that can build D&D Beyond should be able to mine character sheets to determine real PC power and come up with a decent array of monsters that are properly challenging.

    Yeah, they won't fix encounter balance. The whole theme of 5e and 5.5e (the 2024 books contain enough changes that they ARE a new edition) is that players should be successful like 90% of the time. Encounters simply can't be fixed without removing some of the player options, or at least scaling them back massively. The whole point of things like resistances in enemies is to ensure that players are shunted to rely on a mix of tactics rather than a 'push button to win'. Sadly, 5e and 2024 obliterates that by giving player characters so many ways to get around resistances or bestowing disadvantages onto enemies. So, no WotC just can't 'fix' the encounter without 'fixing' D&D. At this point D&D has become a mess of 'give players cool things and forget about the DMs'.
    It's only going to get worse given that we all know that one of the goals of WotC is AI DMs. I'm genuinely expecting absolute trash from the writing team in the 2024 MM and 2024 DMG. If they ever actually cared about DMs, the DMG would have been published a LOT earlier than scheduled.
    You're very optimistic and I hope you're right and I'm wrong here. At this point, I'm going to remain skeptical on it. The 2024 rulebooks in my opinion as a long time DM and GM of many other systems is that they are a trash fire of power creep and will cause more DM burnout. I hope I'm wrong though.

    • @MartinNelson
      @MartinNelson 7 дней назад +1

      @@notsochosenone5669 Personally, I would dispute that the monsters are looking promising. Mostly it's a patch on a gaping hole. My viewpoint is that it is the underlying system that is at fault, and the 'fixes' are minimal. Legendary Resistance was already a laughably poor way of 'fixing' encounters at high level. To double down on them and encourage DMs to stick those monsters in their lairs just kinda shows to me that the team didn't know what to do.
      As I say, I hope I'm wrong. But I'm not optimistic.

      Lower but deadlier tends to work pretty well, in my experience. There are a lot of monsters in 5e that have absurd numbers of hit points, but don't do enough to be interesting. I run a lot of modules and often find it useful to replace a monster with the next strongest variant to challenge my parties. So if an encounter calls for an Adult White Dragon, I'll swap it for the statblock of an Ancient White Dragon, but set the HP to close to the minimum of the range which works out be close to the average for the Adult Dragon. But the ancient is more resourceful and deadly. Or if it asks for a Veteran, I'll use a Champion statblock with low HP.

    You keep saying you only care about the DM side of things because you're rarely a player. That I think is a flaw. If you don't care about the player perspective you lose out on aspects on what makes the game fun for them. This is where your cavalier attitude towards PC death comes in. I accept your word you aren't trying to kill off PCs on purpose, but it's not so simple of "just roll up another character" and you do tend to have a lot of TPKs in your campaigns. I have yet to hear of a campaign you ran where a TPK did not happen, including Pathfinder. You called it the Tracy Hickman effect in a past video. However, it's not only about PC death, which I do agree the risk must exist and if it happens it happens. I'm not advocating PC plot armor immortality. Rather, it should matter to you as DM what makes a game fun for the players. Certainly good DMing if a factor. However, you should know why players do things. Are players doing Paladin/Hexblade because they want POWER, or is it really because they aren't feeling powerful enough as a single class Paladin despite smiting? Is it the class itself? Character build? Player tactics? Campaign encounters? Adventure plots? P.S. You still do not suck.

I have come to the conclusion. That it was utilized to encourage players to find NPC cannonfodder to keep them alive. Otherwise, it was to inspire immense fear of certain monsters.
      The 1st level cleric spell Cure Light Wounds could in theory summon archdevils, and demon princes. If by some good luck you rolled a character with psionic powers. The uses of these powers could also bring about monsters with psionic powers.

      I think the issue more is that monsters of the same CR aren't balanced against each other. A group of 5-6 CR 1/2 shadows is a medium difficulty encounter for a party of 5 level 3s, but in reality is very dangerous and can turn extremely deadly if the shadows focus fire their attacks. Scouts, Gnolls, and Orcs are all CR 1/2 and pose nowhere near the same threat level. It would be nice to have the CR be approximately correct difficulty for the party, where the DM can scale the encounter up or down a few levels if the party is particularly strong/weak. It's something else where you can throw five encounters that all should be exactly the same difficulty at the party according to CR, and get anything from a complete cakewalk to a TPK.

Or Web? Very popular spells. Ive been on countless battles, shit isnt that unpredictable. Its the same moves youve seen your players pull off dozens of times and yet, when another epic encounter rolls around, many of you are just so shocked the players keep using the same powers they been using? 😅😅😂

Any one of those can shut someone else down. Nothing can shut down a big dumb barbarian faster than a hold spell, though.

      @@timreynolds4785 I love control spells, I'm just baffled by DMs who don't factor those in when setting up an encounter. Like....duh! Here comes Spirit Guardians and fireballs for the 120th time. How do they not know this? Instead, some cry. My DMs just pay attention to our abilities and then plan around that. You know, make it challenging.

    Almost stopped listening when you started to complain about the CR system... FFS figure it out. I don't use it, different groups of adventurers have different power levels. unless you make everyone and every group so homogenized that they have the same power a CR rating will never really work. I DONT want it like that!! CR is but a guide, get better at judging your party. PF2 is lame when it comes to combat that way. Seems like you go up a level, so does your enemy. you do more damage, your enemy has more life, and so on. Same at 1st level as at 10th level... at first you do X damage and have X life. then at 10th level you have 10X life and do 10X damage. BORING. sounds like poor DMs without imagination should play PF2 to me and not
    DnD, IMO

      No spark or drive in most of the DnD complainers and no rules would save that.
