    Sean is awesome and so are his batteries.. I did the swap in my old Model S and it's been solid.. no more "12 V battery needs replaced soon" messages. I'm out of warranty on the car so I don't have to run it into Tesla service every year or 2 and spend $$$$. Thx Sean!!

    I had my doubts, but I ordered this, and installed it per this video, and it works. No more constant dead or low battery.

      Did you pull the high voltage battery fuse when removing the original 12v?

    • @lavapanther
      @lavapanther 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@nxtiakOh, definitely. I did everything in the exact order of the video, and it worked. To be honest I expected some hiccup or another. Also, I used small 10 and 12 combination wrenches, and was able to reach even the lower retaining bracket, but admittedly a socket or ultra long socket would have been better.

    Why close the high voltage breaker before hooking up the negative terminal? Wouldn’t it eliminate the 30 amp arcing issue that you identified if you hooked up the negative terminal before you closed the high voltage breaker??

      If you don't connect HV circuit breaker before connecting the 12V, the car tries to power up the HV system but couldn't which will likely result in some error messages or even permanent fault codes in the OBDII. So it is absolutely a good idea to power up 12V and HV the same time, which means the HV circuit breaker has to be connected when 12V powers up.

    Can a 12V Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery be used in colder climates where winter mornings can be as low as -25F?

    • @seanscherer7437
      @seanscherer7437 2 года назад +2

      For sure! Ohmmu does testing on their batteries down to -30 Celsius for the charge/discharge specification and cycling. Cold temps are definitely gonna reduce the lifespan of the battery but the LFP chemistry is so robust that if built well (the proper cells and packaging and BMS) the negative effects are minimized. Lead Acid battery life is also reduced in the severe cold.

    hi, is there a reason why you finish connecting the negative before you reengage the high voltage?

    • @AnkurSethi108
      @AnkurSethi108 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I didn't get that. His explanation didn't make any sense. It only makes sense if the battery is disconnected to engage the high voltage And then he said there would be arcing. Why not just wait until both terminals are connected. That is what I will do.

    • @nxtiak

    I did not quite follow why you turned on the High voltage switch before you reconnected the 12 V negative terminal. Whats the reason for that sequence?

    • @seanscherer7437
      @seanscherer7437 2 года назад +2

      The explanation is that it can be done at any point during the process (after everything is totally powered down). In some vehicles if you push/connect the HV plug after the 12V it will have an alert in the dash from the time spent with 12V live and the plug disconnected.

    • @nxtiak
      @nxtiak 2 года назад +1

      Yeah it was weird he reconnected it before connecting the negative terminal because he even said you might get a spark and have to do it quickly when connecting negative terminal. Well all that wouldn't be an issue if he doesn't reconnect the high voltage disconnect u!til the end?

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  2 года назад +2

      The little spark (not a big deal really) is just from reconnecting the 12V power fully to the load, it would happen on the positive or the negative, whichever is connected last (makes the circuit complete between car and battery). It also doesn't matter if the HV is engaged, the spark is still gonna happen, the car has a bunch of systems that immediately start to boot up when that connection is made, this puts a few amps of current load on that battery and thats enough to create a spark if the gap is sufficiently small. Basically its the electrons getting really "excited" to start their traveling through the vehicle and energize it''s systems and they are so excited they don't wait for the bridge to fully connect and start jumping the gap as quick as they can when it gets close.

    Does this battery work in cold temperatures? I hear lithium 12v batteries have trouble in cold temps? Is this true?

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, somewhat and yes... to explain; our batteries are very stable in the cold due to the composition of the cells and the form factor we use (prismatics, tightly packed, sharing temperature), we have tested them in extreme heat and extreme cold. But to go further than that we started moving all of our lines to include an internal heating technology as well (warming silicon pads between cells). To note though, we have never really had problems in the cold with our batteries but there is an abundance of information online that scares folks from using the words Lithium and cold in the same sentence without cringing so adding this technology gives some added peace of mind.

      @@OhmmuEnergy I recently looked at a competitor's battery (Valiant VTL12-100CW) and if I am reading the datasheet correctly: they shut off the discharge at -20C. But allow charging down to -30C.
      I may wait for 12V sodium-ion batteries with a wider temperature range to become available.
      Edit: to be clear: I am more likely to buy the 50AH version: did not like the $1300 quote for a battery with Blutooth.

    Hi! The way you did the swap ensured that you would lose the car’s computer data by completely disconnecting your 12 volt lead acid battery. You could have used a battery pack or a jump battery to connect to your car’s 12 volt-battery cables. Then, when you did disconnect your cables from the car’s 12 volt-battery, the battery pack or a jump battery would continue supplying 12 volts to your car’s computer. Not sure why you didn’t use this simple trick.

    The price negates everything. 500 bucks. Maybe you can convince Tesla drivers to throw away their money but not every EV owner is a Tesla

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  2 года назад +5

      Why is that a "throw away"? Do you neglect the cost of battery+install x 3 vs battery+install once? Or just don't believe it would last? Did you throw away money by buying an expensive Electric Vehicle? Typically buying a gas vehicle is a lot cheaper, so do you also ignore the longer term cost/benefit ratio on that purchase or how do you justify it? Or is this just a knock on Tesla drivers (which I get)
