I think the dev probably made more money with the $3 price tag than if it was in the $10 range. I value the game at around $10, but I don't know that I would have before playing it. $3 was a no-brainer. I loved your intro. 👍
4:00 That sounds fun for you because that's an englishized italian basically. Peachone refers to "piccione" which is the italian word for pigeon. Luca Galante, the dev, is italian!
I'm happy that it finally got picked up by a big streamer for it to get the attention it deserves. It's such a simple yet challenging game. For a whopping 3 dollars you will absolutely get a minimum of 30 hours out of it. I remember my first time trying it I played it for 5 hours straight.
I literally sleep 3 hrs a day for a full week bc of that game today i just slept for 13 hrs woke up and played and here i am going to sleep have to wake up in 4 hrs fml but i dont regret
Great video! Love the creative idea to end the video with the 5-loot chest. That little melody is always a must-watch for me as it's a not only a visual wet-dream, but a musical bop that has such a satisfying musical resolution.
When i saw asmon gold play it i bought it right away. I regret nothing its addicting af, also whats even better about the game is that its not boring to watch on youtube, twitch etc. which makes it even more popular. Great review sub :)
This game is honestly so well designed, there are so many things behind the scenes happening that show a lot of game design understanding from the creator. I've started making a game in this genre, focused mainly around Path of Exile-style projectile mechanics (and headhunter), and it's been really interesting recreating things from this game and analyzing it.
Personally, I think this game is a modern-day equivalent of ROBOTRON. Harkens back to the look and feel of Williams Electronics and Midway Games. So good... (Wikipedia) Robotron: 2084 (also referred to as Robotron) is a multidirectional shooter developed by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar of Vid Kidz and released in arcades by Williams Electronics in 1982. The game is set in the year 2084 in a fictional world where robots have turned against humans in a cybernetic revolt. The aim is to defeat endless waves of robots, rescue surviving humans, and earn as many points as possible.
I too was into playing Wolfenstein 3D on an IBM PS/2 Model 5, basically was a a generation before the 386, so didn't have the soundblaster sounds early on. But I also played Doom, Heretic and Commander Keen. I think one of the things from those games back then compared to the majority of games these days is that those games were basically fully fleshed out, most of the bugs taken care of an resolved since there wasn't a good way to be able to patch games back then with the early days of the internet, though patches did exist, they were very few and far between. Nowadays most games are put out with much less effort to ensure that the game is stable, most glaring bugs are resolved and fleshed out. There's more and more PC games coming out as "Early Access" and tend to try to cram more than what's needed for a V1 of the game. Granted, Early Access can be good for devs to be able to get a feel of how people like or dislike their game. There's probably some out there that put their game in Early Access early in their development as a way to include the community in the journey of the game being built, which I like that. As you addressed, I think it's the matter of the simplicity and focus on gameplay/mechanics that is attractive and addicting with Vampire Survivors. I saw a POE twitch streamer playing and thought I'd give it a shot since it was so cheap and ended up playing 5 hours in one sitting that first night. I've enjoyed it and it's also one of those games where you don't have to feel that you're worried about missing out on something because there's no special events, no "login" bonuses, etc. It's a fun game and one that you can pull out and play when you want to pass the time. It gives me a similar feeling as Dead Cells. Like the replayability that Dead Cells has that's kind of similar to Vampire Survivors in a way, but not as simplistic.
I've been really enjoying this game for the pasts month or so, it throws me back to playing Solomon's Boneyard on my iPod in 2010/2011 which has many very similar mechanics.
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” Henry Ford - and now we are sitting here, with the faster horses in our rooms and come to the conclusion, we demanded the wrong thing. More of the same just bigger, faster and more polished doesnt tickle us at all.
Man, youtube recommended me one of your path of exile videos somewhat recently and I was pretty impressed: it was well produced, great picture and audio quality, pacing on point, very good diction and presence, all on top of an interesting build! And now you're also telling me that you have experience in the industry and can also provide deep insight and analysis in form of video essay narrative content? On Vampire Survivors, my personal game of the year?? IS THIS REAL LIFE?? Jokes aside, great job and awesome video, I loved the part about being careful about revisiting memories, because they might lose their magic, it resonated with me, I think it's good advice for life in general, too. You know, the developer of the game is Italian and as a compatriot of his, let me tell you, the "inside jokes" in the names of things, for example, are literally out of this world, my friends and I always joke about this game being Italy's cultural masterpiece of our age if we were playing Civilization! ahah
I played/was obsessed with magic survival like 2-3 years ago and when I saw vampire survivors the first time I thought it was the original game.. wacky vampire survivors has such a good sense of individuality it doesn't look like the inspiration
I played a lot of the original video games in my childhood (yes, including Castle Wolfenstein and Doom), but the one that was the most defining for me was Zork. Obviously, not a first-person shooter. But the fact that the game world was so rich and exciting with only text was mind-blowing to me. It was also the first time I saw a computer-based implementation of a role-playing game. (I still have a copy of it on my computer. I looked at it again briefly a year ago. Unlike your discussion of being disappointed with the reality of revisiting nostalgia, I found myself grinning and enjoying it just as much as I'd remembered.)
This is a wonderful review with apt takes on the gaming industry, which is turning into a stagnant void of rehashed boring money grabbing depression. Creators like these deserve praise and support, gaming should fill you with joy and energy! Killer intro, hope the lawn survived.
I love magic survival and have been itching for more updates so I'm really excited to see other people mention it and I can't wait to try this game out later!
In 1995 I had a Sega Genesis and a 2 game cartridge - Lost Vikings, Gauntlet, Fatal Labyrinth on one cartridge and Contra hardcorps on the second. Now I understand that at that time it was like winning the lottery ... I sat at the TV for days trying not to move and wake up my parents. These games have built my selection of games today - PoE, Diablo, Warframe. Vampire Survival is the Gauntlet that I remember =) and when I saw this game in the incentive I bought it without thinking, played 50+ hours and was satisfied! P.S. There are two more indie games in Steam in this setting but with mechanics closer to the diabloid - Hammerwatch.
All these big corporations seem to firmly believe that single player games are a thing of the past, they shove always-online style games down the consumers throat and then wonder why sales aren't as high as they expected them to be. Indie space is chock full of games that give that sense of nostalgia, the thing you crave most - which is just good old fun. I don't wanna have pop ups thrown into my face every time I hop into a game, being preyed upon by microtransactions that look awesome and yet they don't provide much of anything, more often than not. Initially I wasn't a fan of Vampire Survivors when I first picked it up, I was honestly extremely angry on how the game worked. That player agency was taken away by not allowing me to mouse target where certain weapons shoot etc. Whilst playing it came to me, like an epiphany, I've gotten so used to games babying me that I wasn't able to initially cope with a game that doesn't do that for me. And I absolutely love it. 2nd run I ever did on the game I did a full 30 minute lv100 run and after that it was a slew of rounds that ended before 10 minutes. I was fuming, but that's only because I was enjoying the game and I knew I could do better. That's what I love about the early 2000s games, especially PS1/PS2 titles because that's the platform I lived on as a kid. Games didn't have a chance to fix bugs on console. You bought the disc and what you bought is what you got. And what you got was a full gaming experience. Unlike today where you pay 60 euros for a title only to come to the realization you were sold half a game for a quarter of the fun with a third of the price about to be in DLC that's launching alongside it and definitely was part of the package before they decided to split it for more profit.
Really glad you mentioned Smash TV! Used to love that game. You're right, this would have been super fun in the arcade. Love this type of long form video. Keep up the great work!
"I think you should have to do the thing, to make the thing" 10:45 How many games are made by people who don't play them? Not just try a demo once or twice, but actually put the time and energy to get to endgame and discover what the grind is. Understand personally what is fun, what is frustrating, what makes you rage quit and what makes you stay and never want to put the game down? Self motivated, inspired people like the Vampire Survivors' creator do, but they are few and far between. It is sad that creativity and originality are gated behind big and bigger companies that control most of the revenue and are far more concerned with percentages and stock prices than creating something truly lasting and attaining greatness. "Do the thing".
The most impressive thing about this game to me is that on paper not only does it not sound fun to me but it actually sounds like a game I would hate. I'm the type of person who enjoys games with deep combat systems, less but more powerful/intelligent enemies, and progression that's more based around player skill rather than making numbers go higher. I actively dislike idle games, rogue likes, bullet hell games, and hack and slash games. The idea of a roguelike idle game hybrid where all your attacks are automatic and all you do is walk around and collect experience so you can get more powerful abilities to cutdown waves of enemies who mindlessly walk towards you literally sounds like it was tailor made for me to not enjoy it and yet for some incomprehensible reason I LOVE it.
Wait wouldn't you actually like roguelikes since you want purely skill based gameplay By the nature of the genre the only thing improving as you play would be your skill right
Cost, player expectation, and risk need their due when talking old and new. I burned through VS and now my favorite character is MissingN0 thanks to the incredibly stupid stats he can have. Negative move speed is often a pain, but funny when it goes past -100%. If you want to check out another indie but from the polar opposite design space; Shadows Of Forbidden Gods is in early access.
I really like this video, but was surprised that there was no mention that the developer of the game had a really long career in the online gambling industry. Though I guess that would have veered away from the main point. But it's really interesting how the developer borrows heavily from two industries where addictiveness = money, just to use all those mechanics to maximize the fun on Vampire Survivors. Like, the treasure chests didn't need to be nearly as over the top as they are, but they sure do give you a dopamine boost every time you open one.
You know, the fact that I was playing that mobile and thinking, damn. I wish there was a pc version of this. Start seeing this video, and thinking this is exactly the thing I was looking for, and then you just show the game. Easy purchase :D
back in 2011 i bought skyrim for 50€ it was my first full priced video game i ever bought. I was 14yo and 50€ was a lot of money. i had some fun with it and played for round about 50 hours. From this on i decided 1h/1€ should be the least ratio of playtime/money befor i say it was a mispurchases for me. And boy this game is 50h/2,5€ so in my calculations its 20 times better than skyrim for now btw poe is 700h/130€ of mtx for me :D
The 90s may be the current golden age but I think in the next couple generations we'll have the true golden age of video games as kids grow up with gaming being a normal part of life and the term "gamer nerd" disappears.
I love Magic Survival, felt the same way about, like "how can I give this guy money?" And I did buy the no-ads pack for it. I'm sure I'd love Vampire Survivors, but don't feel I can justify installing it now as my time is very limited. As a fan of your channel and your PoE content, I want to say I really enjoyed this video, I think you did a great job with it, and I'd love to see more like it, especially about things you are passionate about. That passion shows through, and makes it a much more compelling watch.
The first thing this game reminded me of was a variation of this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase_(video_game) It's certainly an evolution, but as a developer, I'd say looking back at those old, simple, one-mechanic games is a great way to find useful, genuine inspiration.
Good take. check out Starsector if you want another impressive indie title that I can safely say call "god-tier." crazy amount of mods to change the way you play it too! $15 and I've played it heavily for two years
12:40 omg Dungeon Raid is/was my favorite phone game. I am still pissed off that you cant download the original version on my new iPhone. even with the bad graphics i would play the shit out of it.
I'm unsure why everyone is so invested, I've seen the weapons, almost got all achievements, and I don't see why it has caught so many people. I'm not hating, this is a lovely game. just want to know why everyone likes it, it's too long for me and once I've seen a weapon, I don't need to see it again.
What is that game again that pulls me in for hours and hours all the while shoving ads for its MTX in my face? ) I love PoE but it is a game-as-a-service time and money trap as well. But enough of that, Vampire Survivors is awesome and this video essay gave me a new perspective on it. I don’t even feel any nostalgia for the games it references as I wasn’t playing video games back then. It’s just solid in the best sense of the word and I‘d be happy if it started a trend… If it isn‘t just MTX-fest ripoffs by the usual suspects.
Support original ideas, avoid franchises and p2w games like the plague they are. Only thing I purchase in Path of Exile are inventory tabs, most of the MTX in the game really do not match PoE visual style anyways.
I think the dev probably made more money with the $3 price tag than if it was in the $10 range. I value the game at around $10, but I don't know that I would have before playing it. $3 was a no-brainer.
I loved your intro. 👍
The $3 range is brilliant. I've probably spent $30 over time, gifting it to people.
I found out recently that Poncle used to do the software for slot machines and realized how on the nose that is
I think this genere of game should be called bullet heaven since YOU ARE the bullet hell
4:00 That sounds fun for you because that's an englishized italian basically. Peachone refers to "piccione" which is the italian word for pigeon. Luca Galante, the dev, is italian!

Great game,me and my son love it we do challenge where the person not playing picks the power ups and level up.A ton of fun each time

Sub, I have to say, Ive watched this vid a second time. Its so enjoyable to hear you talk about all this. Thanks for this!
What a great video ! As a dad-aged game dev myself- this is right up my alley:) from the references to the analysis- everything clicked. Thanks!

where the hell has this version of Subtractem been? great video would love more similar to this.
I love magic survival and have been itching for more updates so I'm really excited to see other people mention it and I can't wait to try this game out later!
As an old gamer myself this game reminds me of Gauntlet just auto attacks. So many quarters lost to Gauntlet. Made me fall in love with RPGs .
In 1995 I had a Sega Genesis and a 2 game cartridge - Lost Vikings, Gauntlet, Fatal Labyrinth on one cartridge and Contra hardcorps on the second. Worth noting SplatterCatGaming's video gave Vampire Survivors its first big population explosion.
great video! I have recently been hooked on the game lol a good break for POE

I got convinced, great video. I love to see your history as a gamer
Got the game on Game Pass then bought it for 4€... I feel bad and hope I had an option to pay full price even tho it's just 1€ off :/

FYI the funny names are mostly puns of italian words. Peachone for example sounds similar to what you pronounce Pigeon (Piccione)
Really love the long form! Would love to see more.
I saw this in the Steam store and was debating about it. Definitely pulling the trigger now.
This game is amazing. Opening to this video cracked me up too. Nice!
subtractem channeling his inner hbomberguy, i love it
Really liked this video, something new. It was fun
DungeonRaid, now that's a blast from the past... such a great game!
This guy is like if Walt Disney was a gamer.

Love the video and fun analysis
Vampire Survivors is perfected gaming. Simple, “sit down and just play” fun.
The 90s may be the current golden age but I think in the next couple generations we'll have the true golden age of video games as kids grow up with gaming being a normal part of life and the term "gamer nerd" disappears.
watched the game in Asmons stream tried it and fell in love with the game, its just so good :)
What a great video!
Love your content regardless about which game you talk
Insanely great video! Thanks for 25 min well spend time :)
first thing i thought when i saw this game was touhou+castlevania+binding of isaac
Great video. Do you have any hidden gems you'd recommend for Android games?
At the moment no sorry. It's actually been quite a few years now since I played a mobile game at all, it became too hard to find good ones.
I think that it got a lot of inspiration from Castelvenia
Great video and I also recommended that game to everyone because of how good it is and how cheap it is for what you get ^^
I'm playing on a cheapo Walmart laptop and finally got my first win last night after 8 hours of game time. Was awesome.
The first thing this game reminded me of was a variation of this:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase_(video_game)
It's certainly an evolution, but as a developer, I'd say looking back at those old, simple, one-mechanic games is a great way to find useful, genuine inspiration.
Odd sense of deja vu...
Good take. check out Starsector if you want another impressive indie title that I can safely say call "god-tier." crazy amount of mods to change the way you play it too! $15 and I've played it heavily for two years
12:40 omg Dungeon Raid is/was my favorite phone game. I am still pissed off that you cant download the original version on my new iPhone. even with the bad graphics i would play the shit out of it.
Yeah I've strongly considered making my own version just so it still exists
Three dollars. My God, three dollars. I would give this game an easy 10/10 and it’s THREE DOLLARS.
That intro tho xD hahahaha good stuff.peachone
thanks for the vid!
I have 175.3 in this game,, nice to se that Im not the only one that like this game :)
I played like 12 hours straight of this. What a incredible game for 6 bucks.

"In highschool 2 decades ago"
AIN'T NO WAY YOU'RE IN YOUR 40s?? YOU LITERALLY LOOK LIKE A YOUNG ADULT SIR
41 this month :)
What an intro
I'm unsure why everyone is so invested, I've seen the weapons, almost got all achievements, and I don't see why it has caught so many people. I'm not hating, this is a lovely game. just want to know why everyone likes it, it's too long for me and once I've seen a weapon, I don't need to see it again.
Why did you upload the video here ont eh main channel?
Decided to make all main content on this channel. Second channel will be for pure experimenta/bonusl stuff. Changed my mind after the initial upload.
@@subtractem gotcha
cooooooool video
It was okay
What is that game again that pulls me in for hours and hours all the while shoving ads for its MTX in my face?
) I love PoE but it is a game-as-a-service time and money trap as well.
But enough of that, Vampire Survivors is awesome and this video essay gave me a new perspective on it. I don’t even feel any nostalgia for the games it references as I wasn’t playing video games back then. It’s just solid in the best sense of the word and I‘d be happy if it started a trend… If it isn‘t just MTX-fest ripoffs by the usual suspects.

So, you can play RF here. Interesting...
Ive played way to much of this game ans its great!!!
idk its kinda overhyped tho
No way man,it's not perfect but it's a great game with multiple mechanics
Support original ideas, avoid franchises and p2w games like the plague they are. Only thing I purchase in Path of Exile are inventory tabs, most of the MTX in the game really do not match PoE visual style anyways.
Loved the video ! It Made me buy the game 😆 gamer dads unite 🥸 …
