I once worked on some homebrew that was along those veins, but dropped it when I realized it was a bit too ambitious for me, and I would probably never have a chance to properly implement it.
The idea was Divine Hymns; very intricate but powerful divine magic that could only be harnessed through music and song (probably needing multiple performers, though not all need to be bards). I had nearly a dozen outlined, where each held greater powers the more worldly (i.e. level-based) one became. Each had four levels of potency, each corresponding to one of the four level tiers of play. They were never meant to be something you could quickly cast, but could still drastically change the tide of a given situation.
Each set of sheet music for these Divine Hymns would be either legendary or minor artifacts in their own right, therefore relegating them to either functional McGuffins or high-level aces-up-one's-sleeve status.
Oh well, not everything gets off the drawing board...

I view Bards more as copycats than seducers, they would practice or help with their teammates daily routines/rituals. Also Bards would be some of the main participants in the public information networks, but would still also be found in the other two. The mane reason a grope would want a Bard with them is battlefield communication.

One of the problems I have always had with bards is that Perform skills are charisma-based. Some of them should be dexterity-based. I had to homebrew the rules to make musical instruments use either. I also had to make Oratory performances charisma, intelligence or wisdom based too. I also made singing constitution or charisma based, because any singer can tell you that if you don’t have the lungs for it, you can’t sing worth a damn.
One of my favorite characters was a fighter/rogue with a lot of skill points in Perform, because it was better to be thought of as a bard than some ruffian street thief. It was a goblin fighter/rogue with a Pipes of the Sewers, so he would never be without a source of food, but I twisted it just a bit to make him more interesting. Between being able to juggle, walk tightropes, play the flute, tumble and dance, even the other PCs couldn’t tell what class I was playing until that first time I rolled a sneak attack and hit like a ton of bricks. Since then, pretty much every rogue I play includes some sort of Perform skill.
You don’t have to be a bard to be bard-like. The priest in the film Dragonheart could be described as a bard, the way he was always writing down the stories of Bowen’s exploits. Anselm in The Name of the Rose could also be described as a bard, since the whole story comes from his point of view.
Go wild with it. Break the stereotypes. Stick a little bit of bard into classes that shouldn’t have any bard in them. Be the acrobatic fighter. Be the cleric recording the tales of some great hero in your own party. Be the wizard with lots of showy magic for entertaining a crowd. A bard is a little bit of everything, so it is easy to make everything else like a bard.
I haven’t had a chance to do it yet as a PC, but the idea of a bard-like Druid has been rattling around in my skull for several months. The image in the mind’s eye of an animal companion howling along with song, birds chirping along and Campestri raising their voices in chorus to a Druid sitting on a log playing a flute is just too good not to use, even if it’s just a throwaway moment in a campaign. I might even use that as the way he prays for his spells every day, if the DM is amenable to the idea.
Bards are a lot of fun to play, but you don’t necessarily have to be a bard to be a bard. Go wild with it. Make it your own. Your group will remember it, if nothing else.

    • @mikewaterfield3599

One might think playing an instrument would be Dex based, singing and performing charisma based.

      @almitrahopkins1873 5 месяцев назад

@@mikewaterfield3599 That’s why I had to homebrew it to be either. Take as an example Janis Joplin. Her singing voice was not mechanically good, it was hammered home by her charisma. Jim I Hendrix, by comparison, was a master at getting sounds out of a guitar that shouldn’t exist, but he wasn’t very charismatic. That same divide gives you Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan, whose songwriting styles were charismatic and intelligent, respectively.

If you can’t find it in the books, make it up.
I don’t use bardic colleges in my games. I use bands and orchestras for musicians, Troupes for actors and circuses for physical performers. And those can form wherever two or more bards gather. The only time they are permanent is when the bards of a given orchestra or troupe builds a permanent theatre or auditorium.
The only one that plays a reoccurring role in every one of my games is the World Theatre, where the Grand Bard Wilhelm Shakespar has assembled a troupe of actors. It’s always in a port city, it’s always a capitol of a maritime trading kingdom and it always has musicians, actors, jugglers, tightrope walkers, singers and orators in the streets around it. It isn’t just one building. It’s surrounded by auditoriums, taverns other theatres and the grand fairgrounds, where traveling circuses raise their tents for a few nights before moving on to another city.
If the world you are using doesn’t have what you want, add it. If it has something you don’t want, take it away and replace it. It’s your theatre of the mind, so make it yours.
As a side note, if your warforged bard is not named Calliope, I am very disappointed in you.

First you have to find a group of 12-13 year-old boys who can devote the time to a weekly game…
Seriously though, that sort of thing is usually relegated to background information and activity. You’ll quite easily discover the maturity level of your group with that sort of character concept.
Having said that, I once played a character in a Shadowrun game who was stripper as a cover profession for her other, more illicit, profession. One of the other players was a BTL dealer who just happened to be one of the best deckers in the ‘plex, but slinging beetles paid the bills more often. Other than the occasional snide comment from a Mister Johnson about not needing to hire a hooker to do a wizard’s job, the character background was never brought up.
I’m currently working on making a Callistrian priest/rogue for a Pathfinder 1st edition game that I am probably going to abandon because I don’t know that the rest of the party will be able to handle the character background maturely. You have to be able to strike that balance closer to Firefly than to Benny Hill if you don’t want it to totally derail the game.
A bard prostitute is more likely to be more like a geisha than a hooker. That part of it that could derail the game should only be a minor footnote. The bard is the entertainment, not the “entertainment” in that sort of situation. Focus the character skills in bluff, intimidation and the like in addition to performance skills with instruments that are easily carried or concealed. That creates the courtesan, rather than the hooker archetype. The bard prostitute is there for the seduction, not the sex and you should play up that aspect of it.
