Agreed. I disagree with Dom here, I think 2019 was better than he gives it credit for. Playoffs were interesting with an open East and fairly competitive West (even though we knew GSW would win, Clippers won 2 against them, Rockets series was good, Portland vs OKC with Dame's buzzer beater), and the 2 buzzer beaters were iconic, amazing finishes to their series. Just lots of good stuff, and finally a different team in the Finals! And Toronto wasn't a given to win the East let alone the championship, so it was actually new. The MVP race was also pretty cool.

2016 was so special, sooooo many historic moments. My favorite moment was Kobe scoring 60 in his final game. I had tears in my eyes ngl. I grew up a Kobe fan since I was 10 and all i wanted was a game that reminded me of my childhood, I waited all season but he was barely hanging on. I had no hope he could do it before the start of the last game but I was wrong. For one night he was a one man show, just like I remembered. For one night it was his team on his back, they were going to win with him being the best player or bust. It was one man against the other team (essentially); vintage Mamba mentality. I was in awe, I couldnt believe what I was witnessing. He kept is in the game. As the game was ending Kobe had put on a show but that was not enough, he willed the Lakers team to victory with what ever was left in his tank. I understand it was a “meaningless” game but to me it was special. It made me feel like I was a kid again, and that’s all I could hope for. I was in tears by the end. I only wished I could’ve gone to see the game live.

Think 2019 is a bit underrated because of all the ways 2019 set up the entire 2020s, the looming 2020 free agency (where will Kawhi KD Kyrie go, etc), the memes, and all the storylines in the East. 2018/19 changed the status quo and set up the next decade for half the teams in the league: the Bucks, Raptors, Sixers, Warriors, Thunder, Mavs, Nuggets, Nets, Clippers, Kings, Hawks, Lakers, Pelicans, Knicks. Even to some extent the Spurs, Blazers, Grizzlies, Wolves, Celtics. The Warriors, Thunder, Spurs and Cavs teams that dominated the 2010s all got nails in the coffin
Three great East teams for the 2020s were established: the Bucks became great, the Raptors youth including Siakam emerged, the Sixers showed 17/18 wasn't a fluke and that they were gonna be a serious title contender for years to come. We saw the Mavs emerge with Luka's rise and the Porzingis trade, which also destroyed the Knicks' future plans. Brooklyn rose out of nowhere and were a good squad that could integrate superstars to become dominant in the 2020s. Same with the Clippers. The Nuggets emerged as real future contenders. Atlanta started showing traces of what they might become in the 2020s. The Warriors disintegrated. The Thunder broke up. The Kings emerged. Grit n Grind ended with the Marc Gasol trade. The Wolves lost Butler in hilarious fashion. Some great rivalries for the 2020s were set up: the Raptors and Sixers, Luka and Trae
Nobody knew who would come out of the East. 4 teams where not making the Finals would've been considered a failure so the stakes and pressure were so high for so many fanbases. In an previous seasons for many teams, losing to Bron or not making the Finals wouldnt be a failure and we'd just be hoping to exceed expectations (Sixers had gone from lottery to great, Raptors lacked star power, Boston was thin, the Bucks weren't good yet) but the expectations for all 4 teams went to Finals-or-bust. Raptors (Gasol) and Sixers (Harris and Butler) both swinging for the fences with huge moves to try win now, Toronto had to try break their playoff curse to keep Kawhi, the Sixers trying to keep Butler, the possibility the Celtics would just get it together with their talent and run through the East, the Bucks being a machine
Sixers-Raptors and Raptors-Bucks were both amazing series, the first is a candidate for best playoff series this decade. Nuggets-Spurs and Nuggets-Blazers both went to 7. The Shot is an all-time great NBA moment and the Dame game-winner against OKC was another great moment. The drama and pathos of the Finals with a beat-up Warriors team showing the heart of champions, KD's brilliant quarter and re-injury, Klay coming back to take free throws, Kawhi limping through the games to win a ring and cement his legacy in history as an all-time great. The Finals weren't even as injury-heavy or imbalanced as people remember it (Klay played in all but 5 quarters, Cousins played every game, Looney played 4 games, on the other hand Kawhi was limping since the Sixers series, Lowry had a thumb splint, Anunoby was out, and Toronto only lost 5 quarters the entire series)
All the drama and memes: Kawhi laugh, Fun Guy, Jimmy Butler and the third-string, the AD drama and Lakers dysfunction, free agency looming over the season, everything Magic Johnson, the Dame goodbye wave, there's so many I know I'm forgetting right now

Durant, Klay, Looney missed games in finals and clutch quarters, Cousins missed a whole Half in game 4. Who missed a game for the Raptors? If we consider Kawhi and Lowry "injured", we have to consider Curry's broken finger and Iguodala with a hurt knee. Curry, Thompson, Durant, Iguodala, Looney, Cousins all injured for Warriors.

    • @za5528
      @za5528 4 года назад +2

@@sirenamiw6313 My whole point isn't that the Warriors didn't suffer from injuries. They obviously had major injuries. It's that the narrative acts like Klay, Cousins, and Looney were all out the entire series while the Raptors were fully healthy and that Toronto only won against a Warriors team without any of those players. That's just not true
Toronto won most of the quarters even where those guys played. I don't think for a second that they'd have beat a fully healthy Warriors team with KD, but they still outplayed the Warriors even when they had everyone but KD (the same Warriors that swept the 2 games against the Rockets after KD's injury and swept the Blazers, and still had 3-4 All Stars). The KD-less Warriors team were still huge favorites before the Finals and had looked like the 2016 Warriors in the WCF. Almost every analyst and pundit were picking the Warriors to win, only 2 out of 12 ESPN pundits picked the Raptors on the day before Game 1
Anunoby was Toronto's second best defender and just as important a piece for Toronto as Looney was for the Warriors, but Anunoby missing the whole Finals isn't mentioned while Looney missing a couple of games is. Klay, Cousins, and Looney played most or all of the games. If Cousins playing the whole series while hurting counts as injured so does Kawhi limping on one leg since halfway through the Sixers series and Lowry playing with a bandaged finger, if the latter two dont count as injured then neither does Cousins. My issue is just that there's just a double standard there in what "counts" as injured. The Warriors were obviously depleted but the popular narrative that it was a full-strength Raptors team against Steph Curry and bums is revisionist. People act like Klay, Cousins, and Looney missed the entire series when they all played for most of the Finals and still got beat almost every quarter in which they were all present by a Raptors team that were pretty banged up themselves (obviously nothing close to losing KD, but otherwise it wasn't a huge difference). The Warriors won only 5 out of 24 quarters in the Finals and they had Klay, Looney, and Cousins for 17 of those quarters
I'm not ragging on the Warriors. Their injuries in 2016 were real too and affected the result, they'd probably have won if Curry and Bogut were fully healthy. The Warriors with KD would have won against not just the Raptors but against probably any team in NBA history. I'd be delusional to think otherwise and losing to the Warriors with KD isn't a failure for anyone because they're unbeatable at full strength. But in the 2019 Finals they had most of their pieces except KD for almost the entire series and people act like they didn't

2011 was great, especially for everyone in Dallas. Mavs got revenge for getting robbed in 2006, it was David and Goliath... NOBODY expected the Mavs to win.

2016 was actually a kickstarter for the Basketball craze in the GTA and Canada. We were just two games away from the finals we ended up having 3 years later. All those 'jurassic park' fanatics started then. I know I did. I actually didn't pay much attention to the NBA in the earlier 2010's mostly because Vince left us then and I was a college kid who clearly had higher priorities than watching basketball (though I do recall watching mostly every Lebron finals drunk at some bar). For some reason the 2016 run though sparked me and then to witness how that memorable finals unfolded to cap it off...man.

2011 is tops for me. Just because 2016 had moments where things were thought to be wrapped up but they switched up at the end. 2011 however had it all. Twists, turns, parity, and an MVP and champion that wasn't expected. That 2011 year was like a movie.

      Dirk and DWade farewell tour
Luka and Trae battle for the ROTY
Denver second seed in the west
      Clippers making the playoffs
The whole Lebron and the Lakers season which semmed like a realityshow
D ROSE 50 POINT GAME personal record
      DWade BuzzerBeater against GSW
      Manu Ginobili jersey retirement
Jeremy lamb hitting a half court buzzer beater
      Giannis first MVP
Lou Williams winning his THIRD 6MOTY tying J Crawford record
      Harden making 40 a night
Westbrook averaged a tripledouble for the third time
Lillard shot to send OKC home
Kawhi shot to send PHILA home in a GAME SEVEN
Clippers winning 2 games against the Raptors
DJ Augustin game winner against raptors in the first round of the playoffs
      Denver vs San Antonio series
Kawhi and the raptors historical run against orlando, a Embiid Simmons and Buttler 76s, MVP Giannis Bucks and a stacked Warriors team winning the finals in 6 games bringing the first ring to Canada and ending GSW dynasty after 5 years.
