      What´d she gonna do? Imagine your country being devastated by fascists, would you shake hands to a citizen of the aggressor countries?
      I wouldn´t. Not to humiliate the person, but to not create pictures that Russian propaganda could possibly use as proof of accepting their war.

      I'm not sure about that, one way or the other. However, it would be well for Svitolina (and other, non-handshaking Ukrainians) to consider the aftermath of their "code" toward Russian- and Belarussian-born players once this war does end. If some sort of cease-fire is declared between Russian and Ukraine, does that mean that all of the players of those nationalities can suddenly start showing the full measure of sportsmanship on the tennis court once more? How will those in Sabalenka's position deal with that turnabout? Actually, the real issue isn't the handshake; it's the total lack of respectful acknowledgment of the opposing player for a match well-played, whether congratulating the other on a win or some sort of understanding after their loss. The Ukrainians should still hold up a racquet, flash a peace sign, or something that shows respect for the other player, who simply had the misfortune of being born in one of the aforementioned aggressor nations. Otherwise, the Ukrainian players should simply boycott those contests that pit them against a Russian/Belarussian player in the first place.

    • @ClearTipTT
      @ClearTipTT 4 месяца назад +10

      just like there are rules, and guidelines to war, the hand shake is the good sportsmanship part of tennis - if they step on the court, they should be willing to shake hands at the end of the match... a player could always forfeit before the match if they chose not the shake hands... I feel sorry for Sabalenka, what do you want her to say, LOL she's got family living in Russia, and don't want them falling out of windows at a party they were forced to attend.😬😐... anyway this is just a game, may God bless and keep the innocent people caught up in that war.

    • @Deadralord777
      @Deadralord777 4 месяца назад +5

      @@Smartkid2387it’s sportsmanship. Tennis is a game of respect and if you can’t respect the other player by shaking their hand then you lack key qualities of being a true competitor. Sabalenka and all the other Russian and Belarusian players don’t have a say in how their country is governed nor should they condemn their countries either, for fear of retribution or even if they don’t want to. It’s simple and the Ukrainian players are making a mockery of sportsmanship and the ITF punishing players for their countries actions is disgusting. No Americans during the illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which was much much worse than the current conflict in Ukraine, didn’t get their flags taken off their profiles and people still shook hands with them. People vilify the Russian people because they are not like us, when at the end of the day they are, and athletes have next to no say in how their governments run their country.

      @@Deadralord777 nonsense. You can be a good sports person without shaking someone’s hand. Just ridiculous to think otherwise. Svitolina has states her reasons and it is what it is. I don’t agree with wars and yes the rules are different countries. But hard to compare the unprovoked Russian invasion to American occupation in terrorist countries, especially after we were attacked on 9/11. But also it’s not just the U.S. other countries are just as hard on Russia and Belarus.

    The highlights made it look like Sabalenka was overpowering, and Svitolina didn't bring much to the table. But what happened in the first set ... Sabalenka was way ahead and then it was 5-5. Did she melt down, or was Svitolina playing well? And if Svitolina played well, why not show us some of it?

    Historically, wars were stopped during Olympic games.
    Now wars go on, Olympics goes one, tournaments go on.
    Instead of stoping wars or ignoring their fact at all, some players do not shake hands.
    So what else goes on? Endless wining of commentators on hands.

      @@hernancano8681I checked her match with Kostyuk from a week ago and there she was playing well. Something is not right with her here.
      She's hitting a fraction too early and her feet are not where they should be hence her timing is off so to compensate for that she's hitting the ball hard and losing balance.
