    Such an incredible instrument. The amount of musicianship everyone exhibits playing together is incredible, and the sound is so complex and precise. Thank you for showing us how it's played and how the sound is made.

    The sound of this drum is so emblematic that I even hear it used in other Asian countries such as Korea and Taiwan to symbolise Asia.

    Kotsuzumi instrument is very much similar to Indian damru

    • @tsuzumibito2589
      @tsuzumibito2589  2 года назад

      Thanks for your comment. Yes. It looks similar and it can be the roots.
      When Japanese craftsmen get the idea, it is where they started to make them improve.
      After 650 years of improvement, can you find the difference between them?
      In Japan they tried to find the best wood, dry them for many years and hand carved spending for a year to finish them.
      They tried to find the best skins and kept hitting them more than 20 years until they make the right sounds. The best kotsuzumi in Japan is from over 500 years ago.
      Can you imagine how careful they’ve crafted and cared?
      One of the reasons why we have such things is because we have never colonized in our history and they have had passion for the best instruments and best music.
      It was kept from generations to generations without interruption.

      You can buy it online from some traditional Japanese instrument shops or Yahoo Japan auction.
      Be careful in choosing what to buy because they're extremely expensive. I personally recommend buying a plastic kotsuzumi from Taiko Center.

    What about pu and chi sounds? How are they made?

    • @tsuzumibito2589
      @tsuzumibito2589  3 года назад +4

      "Pu" is light "pon" which your fingers on your left hand stay closed after you hit. ""Chi" is light "Ta". Please look at my My latest video, "Kabuki Series #39 "Western Instruments with Refinements vs Kabuki Instruments Which Keeps the Original Form" ruclips.net/video/8eojaqRhhSA/видео.html. It is not about the explanations of such sounds but it tells what was the beautiful sound for the Japanese and what did they expect from their musical instruments. It is in Japanese but has English subtitles. Japanese videos goes more into details. Thank you!

    • @mcmh9523
      @mcmh9523 3 года назад +1

      Authentic kotsuzumis are crafted by only a handful craftsmen in Japan and literally cost an arm and a leg, and even ones made of plastic are very expensive.
      I bought a secondhand plastic kotsuzumi from Yahoo Japan auction for around $300 and it's been serving me fine for the past three years.
      Pro tip, if you really want to spend a couple grand to buy an authentic kotsuzumi, you should buy one USED straight from an expert musician or at least someone who knows how to properly play and care for one, preferably in person. New instruments require DECADES of use to be broken in, and most used instruments you can find online are worthless junk. It is almost impossible even to professionals to tell between a good instrument and a crap one just by looking at the photos.
