Rosanne had (and still has) this knack for fusing toughness and vulnerability in her writing and performances, which put her decades ahead of her peers at the time. I was 20 years old when I received ‘Rhythm and Romance’ as a birthday gift, and her lyrics and performance on ‘Second to No One’ helped me make sense of an impending breakup that I was too young to understand then. Is she walking towards the guy at the end to reconcile or put an end to things? That’s up to you to interpret. Such an underrated song.
